10 Reasons to Add Red Wine to Your Diet and Beauty Regimen

By Surabhi Singh

Yesterday I was looking at the pictures of my trip to the Sula Vineyards when this topic came to my mind. Whether you love drinking red wine or not, there are many reasons and ways to include this to your diet, skin care and hair care regimen. There is basically no difference in the properties of red wine and white wine, except the sugar content. Red wine has less sugar content and is considered to be good for health. Wine is a rich source of antioxidants. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Red wine can be used in many ways: you can make a DIY face pack or scrub, apply topically or even can drink a little red wine regularly to see best results.

It makes your skin glow

Red wine helps in making your skin rosy. It contains polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties. It helps in preventing cell oxidation and eliminates all the free radicals which damage to the skin. Hence, it promotes new cell growth. This, in turn, makes your skin healthy and glowy by turning your dull complexion into a radiant one.

A good exfoliator

Red wine helps in easy removal of dead cells and improves blood circulation, adding an extra glow to your skin. There are many exfoliators in the market which contain the extracts of wine; give one of those a try.

Helps with acne

Red wine is known for its anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing skin irritation and treating acne. Wine also has AHA, used almost in every acne care product. Hence, it unclogs your pores and prevents further breakouts.

Protects against the sun

Wine is a rich source of amino acids, which helps in the renewal of cells and shields you from harmful UV rays. It cannot replace your sunscreen, though. Still, it protects your skin from sun damage because of its antioxidant properties. It also offers anti-inflammatory properties which help in soothing the inflamed skin due to the sun.

Keeps your skin nourished

Drinking a glass or half of red wine helps in keeping your skin nourished and hydrated because it is a rich source of antioxidants. It helps in stimulating the growth of new cells and removal of dead cells, which makes your skin look younger, radiant, and supple.

Tones your skin

Since wine has alpha hydroxyl acid, it helps in unclogging the pores, minimising them, and removing all the remaining impurities after cleansing. This makes wine a perfect toner. Wine also helps in maintaining your skin’s pH balance. The antioxidants present in wine facilitate faster cell turnover.

Helps against skin ageing

Red wine helps in removing free radicals and promoting cell turnover. It also restores collagen and elastic fibres of the skin and prevents it from sagging. Topical application of red wine makes your skin plump and makes it free of wrinkles and blemishes.

Promotes hair growth

Since drinking red wine increases blood circulation, your scalp, in turn, becomes healthy. It also reduces the inflammation and removes dead cells effectively. This reduces your hair fall and promotes healthy hair growth. Bioflavonoids present in red wine helps your hair with keratin growth.

Treats flaky and itchy scalp

Drinking red wine increases blood circulation which makes your scalp healthy. It also reduces the chances of flakiness and itchiness. For this, you can drink red wine regularly. If you don’t want to drink then mix equal parts of water and red wine together and apply this mixture on your scalp. Leave it on for around 30 minutes then rinse it off.

Protects your hair’s lustre

Red wine not only protects your skin from harmful UV rays but also protects your hair. Being an awesome good source of antioxidants, it forms a protective layer over your scalp and hair. This, in turn, makes your hair healthy and lustrous. Rinsing your hair regularly with red wine will prevent your hair from turning frizzy and dull.
