3 Marvelous Clays You must Try for Rejuvenated Skin and Hair

Hello, my dearest IMBBians!

If there is one kind of face pack all of us have definitely used, it the clay mask. The humble clay mask is one of the most amazing skincare products with the power to detoxify and refresh skin as well as hair. Since clays are derived from the earth, they pack in a lot of minerals which deeply cleanse and relax your skin. Also, they are a lot gentler than shampoos and free from chemicals like SLS and parabens, so they clean and restore the natural beauty of your hair. A lot of us don’t know that there are a number of different clays available, let’s talk about the three most popular ones.

Bentonite Clay

Perhaps the most well-known of all clays, bentonite is a natural clay that is the product of volcanic ash and water. A variety of bentonite clay is available, popular amongst which is Calcium Bentonite Clay. Other popular variants of bentonite clay include potassium, aluminium, and sodium. This anionically charged clay is incredibly potent and powerful and is ideal for cleansing and detoxifying. It possesses the ability to remove positively charged conditioners and products that can build up on the hair and scalp. Besides, it can draw out toxins, heavy metals, chemicals, and impurities deep rooted in skin and hair.

Here is a useful bentonite mask recipe to detoxify and restore pH balance of skin and hair:
4-6 tsp. of bentonite clay
1/2 cup fresh aloe vera juice (or use an aloe vera gel)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup olive/almond oil
2-3 drops of any essential oil

Kaolin Clay

Kaolin or China Clay is the most gentle and common clay used in powdered and dry cosmetics. Besides having great adsorbent properties, it stimulates circulation and cleansing, making itself ideal for use on the scalp. For chronically dry hair, Kaolin Clay is an ideal cleanser that won’t rip off the moisture from your hair. It is rich in silica and absorbs toxins from the hair and scalp, increases strength and elasticity, and can help slow down the ageing process of hair.

Try out this kaolin clay masque to cleanse and condition your hair:
4-6 heaping tsp. Kaolin powder
1/2 cup hot water
2-3 tablespoons of honey
2-3 drops of any essential oil

Rhassoul Clay

Famous as the Moroccan Red Clay, Rhassoul clay is derived from ancient deposits in Morocco. It is rich in silica and magnesium content. Rhassoul clay is great for reducing dryness of skin and hair, removing toxins, and adding body and bounce to limp hair. It is also great for exfoliating and removing buildup from the scalp. It is particularly of great help in soothing scalp issues such as dandruff and psoriasis.

Use this Rhassoul clay mixture to soften and moisturise your dull skin and hair:
3-4 tbsp. of Rhassoul Clay
Hot water as required
1-2 tablespoons of coconut/olive/almond oil
2-3 tbsp. of yoghurt
3 tsp. of honey

A word of caution: Do not mix, store, or let these clays come in contact with metal. There is potential for reactivity and reduced effectiveness. Always mix clays in a plastic, glass or ceramic bowls.
