7 Grooming Mistakes to Avoid on Your Way to Work

Hi,

I understand that the morning struggle is a real nightmare, especially if you hit the snooze button multiple times. You may not get time to complete your makeup at home! I have seen ladies whipping out a full makeup kit, having lipsticks, mascaras and even curlers in public transport for getting ready. I appreciate their ability to multitask, but here are the must-know rules for primping and grooming on the go.

1. Unsanitary and unhygienic practice
Hygiene matters. Before doing any type of public grooming, ensure that your hands are clean. In all probability you have pressed an elevator button, opened several door handles, taken cash and held railings among other things, from the time you left your apartment to the time you’re seated in the bus/metro/train. Well, the top four most common bacteria found in contaminated makeup can cause anything from a skin rash to eye infections. So use a generous glob of hand sanitizer before reaching for any makeup on public transport. This step can make such a difference!

2. Applying a pointy eyeliner/mascara in a moving vehicle
Happens plenty of times, and it nearly induces a panic attack each time I see it. I find it almost impossible to end up with a sharp, straight line with the movement and occasional brakes. It’s an accident waiting to happen. It is never worth the risk of stabbing yourself in the eye and causing serious injury. If you need to do any kind of eye makeup, use a soft, rounded cream shadow stick that’s easier to swipe on in one swift motion and blend. Reserve the eyeliner for the mirror in your office washroom.

3. Applying bold lip color
Even if you have the steady hand of a neurosurgeon, mid-commute lipstick applications are never going to be easy. All that jerking around combined with the likelihood of fellow commuters bumping into you doesn’t exactly lend itself to perfectly painted lips. Save any lipstick application for when you’re at work. Instead just dab on some lip balm for the hydrated softness.

4. Spritzing perfume
Please spare some thought for others. No one needs to walk through a cloud of your signature scent, no matter how great you think it smells. Some people are allergic to fragrances; other people just might not love those musky notes the way you do. So be considerate and use it when you are in a relatively less crowded space or preferably alone. If not, use a roll on perfume only on the pulse points of wrists.

5. Painting your nails
Ignoring the fact that there’s probably no way a rushed DIY manicure done on a train is going to look halfway decent, people actually try painting nails in the ample time a morning commute through traffic-laden streets provides. However, no one should have to breathe in those second-hand fumes involuntarily, especially before starting a fresh day. Opt for nail polish strips like Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips, which stick on, require zero drying time, and have no odor whatsoever. And there’s no need to worry that your polish might spill on the person next to you.

6. Using hair sprays to tame fly-aways
This one seems like common sense. No one wants to be collateral damage when you’re spritzing away next to them. A better styling hack? A teeny, tiny dab of hand cream is also a quick way to smooth down flyaways. Rub it into your hands, and then lightly run your palms over your hair—no alcohol-scented cloud or sticky mess to worry about.

7. Clipping your nails in public
Just please, please don’t. It’s gross and irritating. Do I need say more?
