8 Fall 2012 Fashion Trends that You Must Know

8 of the best Fall 2012 Trends Women

It seems just a month ago that we were in the peak of summer, and it’s already Fall/Autumn, according to the earth as well as the fashion world! I’ve been following some of the F/W shows, with the New York and London Fashion Weeks as well as our own Indian Fashion Week happening over the past month, and there are a few trends which stood out and will be a definite hit this fall. Here are some of the best colours and silhouettes that your wardrobe must have this fall –

1. Oxblood colour:

Burgundy and wine are classic hues – both in terms of evening wear and hair colour, and its more muddied, broody version, oxblood red, is slated to be one of the most seen colours this fall. The cover of Vogue India this month also features the logo in a light version of this colour, and the covergirl, Alia Bhatt, in a stunning ruffled burgundy dress. Trench coats, skirts, and rich textured blouses in this shade, as well as satchels would add sophistication to any outfit. Oxblood tones were seen at the classic shows of Gucci, Dior, and Burberry Prorsum. There’s even a beautiful bag this season from the house of Fendi in this subtly luxurious colour. Incidentally, in Rati’s latest OOTD, her Zara crochet top is this colour too 😀

2. Mixed textures:

Mixing leather and lace
Leather and lace, denim and tulle – there are no rules this season when it comes to mixing fabrics and textures. Go for a fitted short leather dress with lace trimming for that perfect look that’s both feminine and edgy.

3. Turtlenecks:

Rag and Bone Turtle neck

I know, I was surprised too, but personally I’ve always thought of them as very chic and office-appropriate, and they’re comfortable too! This season focuses on slimmer, sleeker turtlenecks, instead of the often bulky knits we’ve seen. Go for turtlenecks in cashmere, or blended wool, in different hues and textures. Pair them with a form fitting skirt or cigarette pants.

4. Leather:

Leather is badass, edgy and classic, and it’s made a comeback this season. Think metallic hued jackets, pencil skirts, trousers and even dresses as seen at Derek Lam. Pair a classic leather skirt with a sheer shirt and a blazer, and you’re good to go!

5. Sequins:

Sequines
Sequins have been a favorite all through summer and are continuing into fall. An antique gold sequined clutch would be perfect for party season as well as a casual night or day out. A sequined blouse, keeping the rest of your outfit simple, would also be perfect. Sequins were liberally used at Tory Burch, and closer home, at Anand Bhushan’s show, in dresses and gowns.

6. Velvet:

Velvet
Velvet has been brought back, so you can experiment with this rich and regal fabric. It was introduced even in clutches by Bottega Veneta this season, and pumps by Rachel Zoe. A well-fitted velvet dress with some dressy pumps would be perfect for an evening out in the town, or if you’d prefer something more casual, go with a pretty velvet jumper paired with jeans and a statement bag.

7. Prints:

Mixing prints
This season will see the most variety in terms of prints, and mixing prints. Retro, paisleys, blooms, tartan, tie prints, abstracts – you name it. This includes the ubiquity of the pant suit this season – expect printed, well-tailored pant suits, perfect for work, abstract printed skirts, and lots of print mixes in accessories from jewelry to clutch purses. Marni and the queen of prints, Diane von Furstenburg showcased a lot of prints (and even color blocking) in their collections.

8. Baroque:

The baroque signals an era of pure decadence and is reminiscent of the ornate styles used in architecture during the Renaissance, until the 17th and 18th centuries, and this has been seen on the runway quite a lot this season. There were some stunning dresses from Alexander McQueen and a beautiful pencil skirt by Zac Posen. Style a fitted baroque print skirt with dark accented blouses.

  1. Good morning everyone. 🙂

I loved the post nandini.Very well written. yesterday only was saying that I cant wait for winters to arrive now. Cant wait to wear by boots and coats. 😀 Loved that baroque skirt.

    1. Good morningsss to you too! :* thanks Rati! 🙂 I’ll miss wearing my coats and the Dilli ki sardi 😛 I know that skirt is so drool-worthy, so intricate. Don’t you think in our shaadi type lehengas and stuff also we can say there are somewhat baroque influences?

        1. Woah, talk about bling! Yeah it does have some baroque influences 😛 such skirts are not meant for sitting down in 😛 lol!! Baroque was supposed to mean excessively ornate designs 🙂

  2. Great article, Nandini! Two nights ago, I switched off my fan as the air was cool thanks to the heavy rain (our house temperature is usually 2-3 degrees lower than outside), and I have been counting days to winter ever since. Of course, my mum is shaking her head and cursing the Gods for giving her a stupid child who still can’t tell when the next season is going to arrive. 😛

I am SO glad that I already have an abundance of leather, velvet and turtlenecks (always liked that “old lady” style). Now if only I can find a luxurious coat in oxblood, my happiness will be complete. And that gorgeous Baroque skirt looks so awesome that I don’t there is any hope of me ever finding it anytime soon unless I snatch it off some fashion-forward woman but then that would be rude. 😛

    1. Hahaha! I admit I used to do that too when I was in Delhi 😛 You have leather?!! lucky you. I need to search for one without breaking the bank! Haha. The weather here doesn’t get cold enough for turtlenecks 🙁 I will miss them. I always loved wine and oxblood so now I have a legit excuse to get more of it 😛 Zac Posen is genius. Now if only I could get my hands on that skirt. *sigh*.

      1. Hahaha! My leather is all gifted by my dad. He likes it and gets me leather jackets and coats that catch his fancy. So, who am I to reject them and go against the wishes of my esteemed parent? 😛

I have a friend studying in Vellore who loves turtlenecks too but can’t wear those sweaters there. So, she gets stuff like turtleneck tops(!) with half or three-fourth sleeves and all. Maybe you can look for stuff like that. 😀
