My Experience with Alba Botanica AcneDote Face and Body Scrub

Being a sucker for silly puns, scrubs and all-natural products, I had no choice but to pick this product up. I’ve used a couple of products from Alba before, including the spot treatment from their AcneDote line, and always been pleased with the results. This scrub, however, makes some big promises – it claims to be tough enough for the body, yet gentle enough on the face – and the only way to find out whether it lives up to these claims, was to test it out! The first thing I noticed about this scrub was its color or consistency. The texture is slightly runnier than other scrubs on the market and the texture reminds me of coffee grounds. Although, it’s quite unusual, I like the runny texture, since it makes it a lot easier to apply the scrub all over my face and body. The scrub actually foams up as soon as it comes in contact with water, so I often skip a face or body wash whenever I use this. This makes this an excellent multi-tasker.

Speaking of multitasking, let’s start with how this works on the face. I have combination skin – oily and acne-prone in some places and dry in others. So, I’m always looking for scrubs that will keep acne away, get rid of dry flakes and not dry out my skin. Whew! That’s a lot to ask for right? While this does a really great job at keeping acne away and getting rid of dry flakes, it’s actually a little drying on my face. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a little light moisturizer, though. It also smells like toothpaste, which is a little odd and confusing when I use this early in the morning. When you’re half-asleep it’s easy to be confused about whether something goes on your teeth or face, especially when they smell the same!

What is does really well, in addition to keeping acne at bay and getting rid of dry flakes, is give skin a deep clean. It gets rid of any traces of makeup – eyeliner, mascara, foundation – and any dirt from the day. It also helps keep my skin from getting oily. Although, it’s great on the face, the exfoliating bits in this are a little harsh for use more than 2-3 times a week. If I use it more than that, I usually just massage the scrub with a very light hand. At the end of the day, however, I wouldn’t replace this with my usual cleanser because it is a little harsh for everyday use.

As a body scrub, the one thing I love about this is how the consistency just makes it easier to spread this all over. In addition to that, this indeed is really tough on bacne. Since I’ve been using it I’ve seen a decrease in bacne (and other embrassing not-to-be-named places body acne pops up). This does nothing for pigmentation and stretch marks, but works wonders on acne and unsightly little bumps from ingrown hair. As with when I use this on my face, what I dislike about this as a body wash is that it is drying. Again, not anything that can’t be fixed with a little body oil or lotion, but I’ve been spoiled by the oil and sugar scrubs I’ve been using lately.

This is a great scrub for acne-prone skin that comes at a great price (especially for a natural product). Dry skinned ladies might find it too drying but combination skinned ladies will love it for its oil-control. I will definitely purchase this again; in fact, I have a couple of times already!
