AromaMagic Mineral Glow Scrub Review

Aroma Magic Mineral Glow Face Scrub

Warning: Those who are allergic to Aspirin should NOT use this product.

The use of beta hydroxy acid can increase sun sensitivity by 50%. So use this product preferably at night and use a good full spectrum sunscreen during the day.

What it claims: This face and body scrub for all skin types takes away layers of dulling cells and blackheads uncovering clean pores and fresh glowing skin in just 10 minutes. The skin appears lighter, smoother and looks healthier. It also removes fine lines.

The ingredients are: Corn, Almond, Beta Hydroxy Acids, Citrus extracts, Trace elements of Zinc and Calcium, Pure essential oils of Tea Tree, Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender

Beta hydroxy acid, which is one of the main ingredients of this scrub, is just a fancy name for salicyclic acid – the key ingredient in Aspirin. The great thing about this acid is that it can go right into your blocked pores and exfoliate the dead cells which are built up there causing blackheads and acne. So this scrub is best used when you have blackheads or whiteheads that you want to get rid of. Used as a body scrub, it will help with ingrown hairs as well. Salicylic acid is said to encourage production of new skin cells. So, regular use of this scrub will probably give you anti aging and tan reduction benefits too.

I use this scrub once a week on my face and legs. It really helps in clearing up the face and helps majorly in reducing ingrown hair. I have combination dry skin and this works for me. I would recommend this for any skin type because salicylic acid apparently works best on oily skin. To those with acne and extra sensitive skin however, I’d say avoid using this because the rough, scrubby granules in it may pop zits or scratch delicate skin. In place of this, you could look for a salicylic acid gel or lotion for your exfoliation needs.

The recommended method of usage for this scrub is a little different from most other scrubs I’ve seen on the market. To get the most out of it you must leave it on your face for 10 – 15 minutes after application and then wash it off. I generally prefer scrubs with smoother, larger particles as I’m afraid of microscopic tears with small, rough granules like this one has. However, I don’t use this as a physical scrub but more as a chemical exfoliant and I don’t use this anywhere near the eye area as it feels too scrubby.

The scrub comes in a tube which I like for ease of use and hygiene. The lid is a flip top which I find a little difficult to open normally and quite impossible if you have wet hands.

I usually need to squeeze a couple of dabs out to cover all of my face and my neck. The scrub itself is a pale green colour that doesn’t show up on your skin and I never feel like I’ve put enough on until I slather it on quite lavishly.

On applying it, the first thing you notice is a cool, tingly sensation on your skin. This is quite a pleasant sensation rather like having menthol spritzed on your face. The next thing you will notice is the weird smell. It’s not exactly unpleasant but rather strong and herbal. It reminds me a bit of wintergreen oil. I feel this is a small price to put up with considering how effective this scrub is but if your nose is especially sensitive, you might not want to sit with this smell right under your nose for 10 – 15 minutes. Either way, it’s quite funny that a product that markets itself as using aromatherapy smells so weird. 🙂

Make sure the scrub doesn’t dry out on your skin when you have it on as this makes removal a little rougher on your skin. I try to wash it off when it still feels moist to the touch. To remove it, I gently use my fingertips to roll the granules into clumps and then dust the clumps off my skin. Massaging the scrub into your face (as the instructions for use on the package recommend) doesn’t improve the results in anyway. The blackheads are dissolved during the 10 minute wait and the dead skin has already been loosened from the surface of the skin by the salicylic acid. Massaging the granules into your facial skin at this point would be overkill and why take the risk of tearing your pores open anyway? When I use this for treating ingrown hair on areas such as my legs though, I like to briskly rub the scrub in with circular motions to loosen the hair from under the skin and bring it to the surface. I feel that the skin there is thicker than the facial skin and can handle some heavy duty scrubbing.

The final step is to rinse it off. The scrub gives a soapy, slippery feel to the skin while washing off and it leaves a slightly oily feel on the skin for a short while. My guess is that this may be caused by the aromatherapy oils in it. Since all the essential oils listed in the ingredients help cure blemishes and clarify the skin, this is a good thing even for those of us with oily skin. The essential oils are absorbed really quickly, so you don’t have to worry about lingering oiliness. As for its effectiveness, pores look smaller after using it for sure and blackheads are miraculously gone. Ingrown hairs have also drastically reduced. My skin looks brighter overall after using it and it leaves my skin well moisturized and soft to the touch. At a price of Rs.80, I’d say this scrub is well worth the money you spend. Would I buy it again? Definitely yes! This has become my go to product for emergency blackhead removal now.

Pros:

  • Does what it claims
  • Effective and painless way of removing blackheads from the skin
  • I love the tube packaging. I hate digging into tubs of product and getting it under my nails. Tubes are so efficient and hygienic <3 <3 <3
  • Gives you a great big bang for your buck at Rs.80 for a 60 gm tube

Cons:

  • Disturbing smell
  • Small, rough scrub granules have a greater chance of causing microscopic tears in the skin
  • Essential to use good full spectrum sunscreen after using this scrub

    1. I didn’t know how to describe the smell actually. To me its just a teeny bit strong. Different strokes for different folks I guess 😀

  1. Kiki,
Good review.I have used this scrub in the past and I agree with your views on this product.I used one tube(I used half of it,I will tell you why)of this scrub and never felt inclined to buy it again. It is a very light greenish gel-type scrub(it looks more like an oinment or pain balms or cold rubs). The scrub contains salts which I think are mineral salts. You don’t get to see the salt granules from outside the tube or even when you take it in your hand. The salty granules are very fine since this is a micro derm scrub and very well mixed with the base. You can get a feel of the granules when you take the scrub in your hand and rub it within your fingers or apply the scrub on your skin. This is really a very strong smelling product. The smell I feel is a mix of the smell of Amrutanjan balm and lavender oil.In fact,Palak is right .There is the overpowering smell of lavender oil in this product which I found not to be pleasant at all.I am,of course allergic to very strong smelling products.I once bought Blossom Kochhar Lavender oil. I know some people who just love the smell of lavender and rave about it.I never used lavender aromatic oil before this so I bought this oil.Lavender I heard relaxes you and is good for insomniacs.I enthusiastically pour some drops on my pillow cover before sleeping so that I can have a good night’s sleep. I never had any problem with my sleep but you would laugh at hearing this that the smell was so strong and disturbing that I could not sleep the whole night.Coming to the scrub,it is written on the tube that this should be kept on your face for 10 minutes before you wash it off . I truly feel that companies should come up with more pleasant smelling products(not strong synthetic sweet smelling products but pleasant nevertheless) when they are asking it to keep it on your skin for some time.I believe that beauty products, apart from being effective, should be able to relax you. This product can give smell –sensitive people a mild headache. Now I come to the granule-part of this scrub. The granules are fine just like common salt but they are not so gentle on the skin specially for people with dry and sensitive skin.It can be very abrasive if you scrub enthusiastically. My suggestion is if you use this(this includes people with oily skin ) don’t scrub it at all, just wash it off). This scrub is more suitable for people with oily or combination skin.I read the ingredients on the label of the scrub and noticed beta hydroxy acid but never knew that it’s a fancy name of salisylic acid until today when I read your review.Salisylic acid ,as far as I know is pescribed by dermatologists for people with acne.
So,in a sense I used the wrong product because my skin is dry and sensitive.Probably that is the reason why my skin looked a bit darker when I used this product. It stripped my skin of moisture and your needless to say dry skin looks a bit darker and not look plump or nice when it is stripped of moisture.Sorry, this is too long a post for a comment but I wanted to share my experience so that others can take a considered decision before buying this product.

    1. Yes! Amrutanjan and lavender oil is exactly what this smells like :rotfl: And I think the smell is even more of a shame in such a good product especially because it is marketed as an aromatherapy product.

You’re right in saying that Salicylic acid is commonly prescribed for ppl with acne but its effectiveness doesn’t depend on the skin type. Unlike benzoyl peroxide which works by drying out the skin, salicylic acid is oil soluble. Which means it can penetrate deep into your pores and clean out the gathered dirt and dead skin blocking them without drying out your skin. I have dry/normal combination skin and it works decently for me with no drying. In fact it leaves a kinda oily feel on my skin after use as I have mentioned 🙂 This is only my personal experience with the product and no two skins are alike after all.

You would have heard of chemical peels and glycolic peels for skin exfoliation. This product is a milder version of that. Apart from the pore cleaning tendencies, salicylic acid can also loosen the dead skin cells on the surface making it a good product for exfoliation.

If you want to use it for blackhead removal, then it works best for oily skin as it requires oil to be in your pores for it to dissolve in. This is not to say it won’t work for drier skin types. It might just not show as much of an effect. As a general exfoliant, it works the same on all skin types but the exfoliating effect won’t show up immediately on any skin because the salicylic acid in this product isn’t concentrated enough to cause instant skin peeling or redness and irritation like a full on chemical peel would.

I completely agree with you on the granules too. I hate that aspect. The first time I used it, I enthusiastically scrubbed it in and ended up feeling like I had sandpapered my skin 🙁 This would be very bad for ppl with acne or pimples I can imagine. And I wish they’d mentioned the sun sensitivity that might result from using this scrub too or at least put in a recommendation to use it only at night.

  2. Thanks for the input RS. I totally overlooked the fact that both Palak and KiKi have oily skin and the same scrub wouldn’t work on my dry skin. It would (as you say) really strip my dry skin of moisture.

    Really appreciate your comment. 🙂

    1. I am happy that you noted the points that I made in my comment Rati.I don’t want anybody to waste her money on a product which may not really work for them.

      1. That’s okay, RS. 🙂 I think we all write reviews so that we may help others to make wise decisions. I am sure the mineral scrub works wonders for oily skin. I just overlooked an important detail in KiKi’s review. Thanks to you that you brought that to notice. 🙂

  3. A small mistake in my comment.Read my above comment as’….product which may not work for her”.I mixed singular with plural.Sorry.

  4. I love this product and it is yet another staple in ma kit. Excellent for black head removal 🙂

    Nice review KiKi

Btw, I quite like the fragrance of this product.

OOh and is it Ki who is writing in the name of Ki Ki? ?:-)

  5. hello ,

its my first comment here….but i have read most of ur blog’s reviews…its awesome blog!!!! :inlove: please can u tell me where can i get this product??…iam sorry but iam new to all this stuff..help me

    thanks!! 🙂 🙂

  6. varsha : if you have oily skin than you shouldn’t scrub harder. Just a mild scrubbing will do. Scrubbing often will increase the chance of acne scars to spread all over the face
