Beautiful Eye Makeup Looks

Great Eye Makeup

I have seen so many eye makeup tips, tricks, eye shadow and mascara reviews here on Indian makeup blog. Rati asks my opinion many a time on her application of eye makeup, eye shadow etc. and I am nearly always tongue-tied. Not that I do not like her eye makeup but that I am really at loss to comment on technicalities. But then I realized that I do not have to bother about technicalities anyway. All I have to see is whether it’s looking good or not, whether the eye shadow, mascara, eyeliner etc. are making her look attractive or not. And then I realized that there are a few things on how guys evaluate makeup. Those things hold true for eye makeup also. There are two things I have seen about what I like about application of eye makeup, both of them are contrary to each other

Too much of a good thing is bad:

If your cheeks are looking pink and we realize that it’s because of blush, then our opinion turns instantly negative. Makeup should not be noticeable, or rather, it should make you look good without us guys realizing that you have been made up. So be sparing with that eye shadow. Sometimes lots of color around the eye just turns one off. Instead a simple kajal would have worked wonders. Make it subtle.

Make it loud:

This advice goes against the previous one. If you want to attract attention sometimes sassy, pert makeup works wonders; dark red lips, skimpy clothes and all.. Madonna comes to my mind. You cannot do it often but sometimes a clean colored eye makeup or a smoky eye would do. So if you cannot make it subtle, make it loud! 🙂

So anyhow, I do not have much to speak about eye makeup. But since the time we started IMBB whenever I see a good eye makeup pic I save it on my computer. Today I saw that I have many pics that I could share. I do not have much knowledge about good bad these eye makeups are, how to apply these eye makeup, what are the tricks, etc. but honestly, from a guy’s perspective, they are just fabulous. So maybe your views will not match with mine on these but I can assure you that all guys will agree with me on this. Please also notice the interplay of eye makeups and lipsticks. I have a feeling both are connected to each other in some way and makeup artists might be knowing a few rules about which lipstick goes with what kind of eye makeup. It’s just my theory, and I might be wrong.

Also, if any of you realize the tricks that have been used in these eye makeups, please do comment and let us know:

Aishwarya's Eye Makeup
Aishwarya's Eye Makeup

Frankly, I have never liked Aishwarya Rai but this eye makeup pic is the best I have seen so far on the internet. The makeup is not evident at all. Nobody would notice any eye makeup. But everyone would notice the eyes!

Brown Eye Makeup
Brown Eye Makeup

A Brown eye makeup. Honestly speaking, I did not notice the brown until I read that it was brown eye makeup. I just loved the look.

Eye Makeup
Eye Makeup

No idea what it is, but loved it. Notice the lipstick again.I think the actress is Jennifer Lopez but not sure.

cool eye makeup

This should classify as an overall good makeup pic but I noticed the eyes the most the instant I saw the pic so saved it on an impulse.

  1. wow good to know a guy’s perspective on eye makeup 😛
but yes you are right, eye makeup is kind of connected with the lip makeup. If you do a flashy or loud eye makeup then you should give your lips a natural look & vice versa.

  2. My goodness…guys are so much more sensible…my hubby keeps telling me to stop looking like a circus clown and loves it if I use only a gloss and eyeliner 😐

  3. wonderful! nice to see a male opinion, esp written out 🙂

Guess what comes out from your view is that, like any other man i have known has put it – “i need to be able to see you, not your lips, eyes, cheeks, nose et al, but the whole you”

and yes as u said, none of the above look good without effort. even ash’s no make-up makeup… thats the trick. men like it to be there, but not there. [like my man says ‘what have u done to ur face, its nice]

anything that complies and delivers as a package and not on a piece meal – i guess men notice. personally i believe its because most male genes are cut out to be simple 😉

unlike us gals who have the ability (and do at times!) eliminate the badly done areas and pick out the rest as we are formed to be a bit more erratic.

my ramblings apart, totally enjoyed reading this!

    1. I think most men get uncomfortable when they see overdone makeup or a plastic face. To them it feels like duplicity and wide ranges of complexes that they cannot put their finger on. Both the subtle makeup look and the provocative makeup look are actually ‘simple’ to us in that they give the feeling of honesty. The person is saying ‘this is what I am.’ Something in between appears quite fake to us. To make you understand what I mean remember the feeling which a Victorian era middle-aged lady with too much powder, too much rouge, and a wig on her evoked in you. 🙂

      1. ah “honesty” – bang on! thx… so here is to honest-2-me make up :drink:

yes yes…she is known to be the “seeker” 😉

but then knowing u have said u dont like Ash Rai B, why do most (and i think tats abt 90%) of men like her, even when plastic?! 😕 and us women are criticized when v say she doesnt look what she is, as being just jealous!

        1. Ahh, my dislike has something to do with intelligence, of which Aish seems to possess very little. And most men like her because she looks good on reel, which she does most of the time. They like her because they see her in the movies and not the real life. In a movie it is hard to tell that the makeup looks fake. You women might be great at detecting it but we men don’t pay much attention to makeup on screen. 😛

  4. Aww – nice to see that guys notice these things! 😀

Subtle always works wonders with Karthik, but maybe I should try some tastefully done ‘loud’ makeup as well :))

  5. Awesome post Sanjeev! This also comes at a time when I’ve been asking myself a lot – how do I get my husband to notice my makeup? I know, makeup shouldn’t be the thing that stands out, but the difference makeup makes should be noticeable, no?

Then I realized that I was asking him all the wrong questions – can you see my mascara, how is the lipstick, can you see the flush on my cheeks etc. So now I’ve decided to use a heavier hand with makeup without going overboard or looking like I’ve tried too hard. My dark brown smoky eye tutorial posted today is a step in that direction, since hubby dear does not notice lighter shades. 😎

The thing with eye makeup and lipsticks seems to be an inversely proportional relationship. If you are going heavy with the eye makeup, go light with the lipstick and vice versa. Of course, there are some minor technicalities such as skin tone, shape and size of lips, occasion etc. :-/

  6. Nice post , Mr.Sanjeev ! My routine consists of the most simple things..gloss/kajal/masacara. Just this on an everyday basis. And if I dont do this routine one day , my husband feels I look dull and lifeless. he’ll come and say “Aren’t you going to wear any makeup ?” 🙂 I also have lot of eyeshadows that I sometimes try to incorporate into my looks , but it doesnt work that well. I always come back to my simple routine and I feel that suits me the best. NO need to slather on zillions of products 🙂

      1. Yes it certainly does. And people dont believe that a single thing like kajal can add so much beauty..Some girls who say they couldn’t care less or say they dont have time is BS. It just needs a little effort like everything else in life.

    1. You are right Rati, we generally think guys dont notice much- but they do notice more than what we women do, when it comes to make-up or fashion…saying this out of my personal experience with my hubby n male colleagues at office…Not always they comment on it but they do notice..

      1. I wish IMBB site’s posts and comments come with default LIKE button.. I wanted to like this post and above few comments… SUPERLIKE post and SUPER-DUPER LIKE comments…

  7. I guess this confirms my belief- Technicolor Eyeshadows….not flattering!
My favorite makeup has been Anne Hathaway’s in the Devil Wears Prada…looks amazing!

    http://tinyurl.com/2bbesx8

    so pretty!

i’m not sure if you’ve done one…but can we have a post on clothes?

      1. …well stuff like is wearing heels really worth it? what about colored contacts? and kurtas…?
btw….some research just came out yesterday that says women are more attracted to men in red…so we’re like bulls i guess ?:-)

    1. I agree with you Devika 🙂 always love the way Anne Hathaway looks…classy yet sexy 🙂 In fact, even Meryl Streep’s make-up was done very nicely in the movie 🙂

        1. Yup! totally age appropriate…I loved Anne’s make-up the best when they’re in Paris…so so classy 🙂 with that pout, she could pull off any lip color with ease 🙂

  8. wow
all hubbys need to brush up on their info
its funny to see my bebe confuse all sorts of names for products i use 🙂 (he uses a generic term for all eye make up…. :rotfl: )
its like i use generic terms for anything software related :-((
he will def agree with what u have to say here sanjeev
but all men will also agree that we look so much better in make up
    oh god so confusing…

its always fun to read u tho 🙂

    1. Ahh.. I may not agree on this as all my school time and teenage heartthrobs went without makeup; the only thing they used perhaps was kajal. And still they looked stunning to all the boys. I think even in college I never saw anyone in makeup, but, to be honest IIT girls are not famous for look anyways. 🙁 All in all, I do not think good looks are related to makeup, though I am certainly not against it. It’s a personal choice for every girl. 🙂

I think the ‘need for makeup’ becomes strong in girls after marriage. Not sure why. 😕 😕

  9. this article has motivated me enough to type. i’m otherwise quite droopy at the moment.
i absolutely agree with the first and second points. men i know either like it simple or downright smokey/red lips. they also don’t like the sight of any form of shimmer, blush or foundation.

  10. I agree with looking subtle and not overdoing it….loud makeup scares me 😮 😮 😮 and if someone is wearing loud makeup that distracts me :sarcasm: :sarcasm:. But, there is a rule I think, if you making your eyes bold, leave the lips natural and vice versa…. :beauty: :beauty: . By the way, there is one mallu actress whose eyes are very enchanting….I absoutely like the way she looks and I try to copy her…..

  11. I think both of us should move/make/place a joint request to Rati to do a Kavya special tutorial 😛 😛 😛 😛 . BTW, I too never saw girls in my college years with too much makeup (including me)….might be after marriage, we wanna attract ?:-) ?:-) ?:-) ?:-) ?:-) ________…I do not want to fill that blank….I am leaving it as a blank. 😛

  12. It was a lovely read Sanjeev Bhai. Great to know the other side’s perspective too.

Neha : Like you said, my hub too used to confuse between names of stuff. During initial days of marriage, he could never relate to these girly stuff. Guess its got something to do with mechanical engineers :silly:
I always tease him saying if there is a good looking girl and a power machine (be it a car, bike or any other gadget), he’d be ogling at the latter and wouldnt even notice the girl 😎

But nowadays I guess he is much better in terms of atleast knowing all these things about makeup n all, though there are some occassional mix ups

  13. Aishwarya’s eye makeup is really gorgeous, simple and powerful.

We could get similar look by:

    1. Opening the eyes with Stila Topaz eye liner. Because she has not used white pencil.

    2. She has also applied the black eyeliner in her upper inner lash line to make her upper lashes look more thicker

    3. Salmon concealer for under eye and brightened with benefit powderflage.
