Beauty Benefits of Mustard Oil

Beauty Benefits of Mustard Oil

Indians know how mustard oil has been propagated in our households all the time, now many of us have swtiched to olive and canola oil and have pushed this mircaulous oil to the margins but let me bring this post to you today so we can revive our love for this oil that our grandmoms would still chose hands down any day over olive oil and the like. Take a look at what Wikipedia says about mustard oil:

The term mustard oil is used for three different oils that are made from mustard seeds:

  • A fatty vegetable oil resulting from pressing the seeds,
  • An essential oil resulting from grinding the seeds, mixing them with water, and extracting the resulting volatile oil by distillation.
  • An oil made by infusing mustard seed extract into another vegetable oil, such as soybean oil

I have seen many people including men use mustard oil is often used as a body oil for massage  especially in the winters. You can use it to massage dry areas prior to bath. This will remove dryness, help blood circulation, muscular development and skin texture. In winters, it can be massaged on the soles, especially for children as a relief from colds and chills.

Pure mustard oil even works as a mosquito repellent and has anti bacterial properties.

Our skin could get its dose of vitamin E from mustard oil. It also protects the skin against strong ultra-violet rays and sun, reduces wrinkles and fine lines.

This is miraculous for hair troubles. You can leave it on for half an hour and massage it into the scalp. If you are not comfortable with this, leave it on for ten minutes and then use a steam source on your hair to help the oil get absorbed,or you could use hot air from the blow dryer to help warm up and absorption. You can do it thrice  a week for hair fall . Mustard oil also helps with baldness, premature graying and you could use it in any weather.

It is very effective in curing cold, cough, body pains and aches, congestion caused by colds, headaches and for muscular growth.

Mustard oil is equally good for skin as it is for hair. It is used a lot in aroma therapy spas. It prevents skin from dryness, dullness, itching and infections. Massage your body with mustard oil and then bath from luke warm water.

Learnt this one from Sahiba;’s post,if you want brown or brownish golden hair, go for mustard oil to massage the hair and scalp.

Take some mustard oil and warm it. Massage your scalp with it. Then apply honey through your hair strands and  cover your head with a moist and warm towel for ten minutes. This can be done once every month.

For dry skin, apply mustard oil mixed with coconut oil on your face, massage and wipe off similarly with a warm moist towel.this is great for winters especially.

If you can find henna leaves, add this to mustard oil and heat it slowly for sometime, strain, cool and store. use this before shampoo to massage your scalp.

If you don’t have henna leaves, I am sure most of us have coconut oil at home, heat some coconut oil with a spoon full of mustard seeds and then apply this as oil cleansing method, massage it on the face, use a warm moist towel to remove it. This helps to lighten skin tone and prevent pimples.

For dry skin and combination to normal skin, make a face pack with lemon juice, mustard oil and gram flour, apply like an ubtan and wash off.

For me, this was handy for post delivery massage among  all the oils we used, this was also useful for bridal “peethi” that we call, this was used in a mix of the attas and the besan mixes to massage the body and lighten skin tone, it really helps 🙂
