Ritika asks:

Hi Everyone!

My problem is that I have curly hair, not too curly, but curly nevertheless which is frizzy, dry and rough! Can you please suggest a good shampoo and conditioner for me please? I know I should look into sulphate-free stuff and all, but those are really too expensive for me πŸ™ So a basic, everyday drugstore brand please πŸ™ I have previously used FabIndia’s Avocado shampoo but that made my hair limp! Other than that, I have tried Sunsilk’s yellow shampoo and conditioner and that didn’t do much for the dry state of my hair. Currently, using Sunsilk itself. Please do suggest something that will make my hair soft but not flat and will retain the curly bounce!

P.S. I do workout daily and follow a healthy diet. I also oil my hair prior to every shampoo and I wash my hair twice a week.

  1. hi i have curly hair too, i use himalaya without sles and parabens one, it is for normal hair, and follow it up with loreal hair spa which i use like a normal conditioner… i think invest in a conditioner and buy a normal shampoo.. garnier long and strong is perfect if u apply a lot of oil when you do oil your hair as it does get rid of the oil very efficiently

  2. I have exact same kind of hair πŸ˜‰ I use extra virgin olive oil prior to shampoo and trust me it has absolutely transformed my hair. Its so moisturising and cuts down on frizz to a gr8 extent. Then I shampoo and condition with Dove shampoo. If u r wary of using sls in ur hair then tryy no-poo method(google it). I have tried it and it works well πŸ™‚

  3. I know u hv nt askd it bt I wud still like to mention that if u use the right products, curly hair looks way better than straight boring hair πŸ˜‰ Go for it πŸ™‚

  4. i too have same hair ….oiling hair overnight works best in my case … applying 1-2 hrs before also helps followed by hot towel treatment…

Conditioner is important and i agree with Supriya … Matrix biol-age ultra hydrating conditioner works in my case…. it is sls and paraben – free…

My search is on for good shampoo..used Matrix shampoo earlier but its not working in winter ( conditioner is really good) ..will try total repair 5 shampoo next …

Also sometimes pamper urself with hair spa …i use loccitane one..

  5. I use the dove dryness therapy range. It works really well on my soft curls..I use the shampoo and the conditioner and yes, I do oil my hair before washing my hair. I find that not brushing/combing your hair out is key for this hair type. Just finger comb your hair and use bobby pins and clips to style it. My hair started looking totally different and amazing after I stopped using a hair brush/comb. Hope this helps πŸ™‚

  6. I dont want straight hair at all! I want my curls to look more proper n not limp πŸ™‚ I have mentioned it πŸ™‚ Thanks for the tips

  7. Hey Ritika πŸ™‚
Since you want a drugstore shampoo suggestion, I suggest Dove or Sunsilk Keratinology. And as much as you’s think a shampoo will make all the difference, I also suggest looking into leave-ins (to eliminate frizz and retain curl) and giving up on your brush/comb. Good luck! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Samantha πŸ™‚ I decided to pick up dove after all! But I have a question, isn’t brushing ur hair necessary for the blood to flow n stuff?

      1. nope! it’s one of those beauty myths.
never ever use brushes/combs on curly hair. they kill your curls and turn them into your worst nightmare. just ditch the combing and you’ll know what i’m sayin. πŸ™‚

      2. You’re welcome, Ritika! πŸ™‚ I totally hear what you’re saying… I address that issue by gently but firmly ‘scrubbing’ my scalp with the pads of my fingers when I wash it. And I do use a comb, but only when my hair is wet. And only a wide-toothed comb. If you use a brush/comb when your hair is partly/fully dry, you will disturb the curl pattern and end up with a frizzy mess.
        That’s what I meant πŸ˜€
And ooooh… I must try the Avocado Shampoo you mentioned – I want my currently shoulder length hair to exhibit, even if in a very tiny way, its true length. By limp, do you mean oily / greasy limp or just plain limp?
Sorry for this very VERY late reply! πŸ™‚

        1. And I don’t oil my hair btw. I find it makes my hair oily-feeling and limp, even after I wash it all out. And I’ve never quite figured out how to do it right, so I’m guessing that is one contributing factor πŸ˜›
But hey, so many ppl swear by it, so it must work wonders (if done right, unlike the way I would do it) I guess πŸ˜€

          1. To anyone who might be reading this (4.5 years later though :P), I did figure out what the issue with oiling my hair was – plain coconut oil doesn’t work for my hair, and that’s what I was using for my oiling attempts. It always made (and still makes) my hair feel brittle and limp and somehow never seems to wash out properly.
I now use mustard oil to oil my hair (in hot and humid weather) and a mixture of mustard oil and coconut oil (m:c in a 4:1 ratio) in non-humid weather. This works FABULOUSLY for my hair, and makes it strong, shiny, soft, voluminous and all those other amazing things people say oiling does to your hair! Hoping this might help anyone else whose hair rebels against oiling – perhaps your oil blend is the culprit?

  8. hey i tried d tbs shampoo n conditioner n it really helped my hair……..i use loreal power dose treatment once every 15 days it also helps

  9. Hello everyone,i have curly hair..frizy..n.dry..i want to knw which shampoo to use so as to enhance my curls and make them look ..more pretty..n yes girls apply curd its very effective

  10. Hey guys,

I had been using Herbal Essence TOTALLY TWISTED shampoo and conditioner and till date it has been a life savor. You know that time when you had an amazing head shower and your curly hair for once in your life looks gorgeous and when you go out almost everyone you meet says “wow i wish i had your hair” Well this shampoo and conditioner did that for me but now the stock is out in ALL the stores i have been too (just when i think i finally found THE ONE) and now I’m on the search again for a good product before all my hair falls off.

Yes curd helps and so does oiling and if you have the chance try morrocon oil curly leave in conditioner. I kid you not, it is THE best leave in product which will not undo the curls or leave it limp and please if you ever want to dry your curly hair always use a diffuser.

    1. Saipriya now wheredid u find that conditioner I have been searching for it all over the ity.. umm well 2 cities and online but I cudnt spot one. Can u please tellme where to buy it ?
