Bobbi Brown Hibiscus Luxe Lip Color Review

Skin Tone:  Fair, MAC NC30

Hello lovely ladies,

Bobbi Brown launched a new range of lip colors towards the end of last year. My interest was obviously piqued! Bobbi Brown was probably one of the first high-end brands that I encountered and fell in love with! Her range of products are absolutely stunning. In my opinion, her brand is all about sophistication and bringing out your natural beauty. This range of lip colors has about 30 shades and one is exclusive to Sephora. What draws you in, are her amazing hues, which are elegant and sophisticated – NEVER over the top. Even her bold colours have a hint of “under-stated-ness.” So, for someone new to makeup or someone looking for “office wearable” lip colors, you really don’t need to look further than Bobbi Brown.

So, when these new lipsticks launched last year – me, along with rest of the world – tried to get our hands on the extremely raved about shade – “Soft Berry.” However, it was sold out in Sephora US as well as Bobbi Brown’s own site. So, I hopped the continent and checked in London. Again, sold out! I even had my sis check the shade for me in Thailand – retail and duty free – sold out! Seriously?? Anyway, in the interim, I picked up two other shades to check the formula. Let’s find out how they performed.

Packaging:  Bobbi Brown decided to shake things up a bit and moved from her classic black packaging to the one colour which has always indicated luxe – gold! So, the case for the luxe lip color happens to be a golden one with Bobbi Brown written on the side and her lovely logo etched on top.

Lipstick packaging

The bullet itself is free from any branding. The lipstick has the regular twist-up mechanism and lacks the magnetic closure. However, the cap fits in snugly, so there are very little chances of it coming undone in a bag.

As with all things Bobbi Brown – the lipstick comes packaged in a black box which has the ingredients mentioned on it.

Shade name

My Experience with Bobbi Brown Hibiscus Luxe Lip Color:

Color:  The shade, described as “plum wine” is a medium dark plum shade with hints of rose. It’s one of those neutral shades, like NARS Audrey or Estee Lauder Rebellious Rose which can be very difficult to describe because they have hints of 2-3 colors in them and can look quite different from person to person depending on the skin tone. So, if you want to pick this – you either must try it in person or see a swatch on someone who has pretty much the same skin tone as yours. For reference, I am NC30 in MAC, #301 in Dior, Punjab in NARS (no surprise there!! 😉

Bullet

So, since I couldn’t not get my hands on “Soft Berry,” I went in with “Hibiscus,” which is the other plum, neutral color. These shades work very well with Indian skin tones and are perfect for office goers because they complement the skin tone, are obvious enough as colour, but not loud and neither are they n*de. I think they strike the perfect balance. And over a period of time, I have realized that I really like rose shades – Estee Lauder Rebellious Rose, Bobbi Brown Rich Lip Color in Rose Blossom.

Texture: The lipstick feels extremely lightweight. It glides on smoothly. You don’t need to layer it up, but if you do, it still won’t get cakey or heavy. The beauty of the product also lies in the fact that the smoothness with which it glides, stays on. The satin smoothness does not get drying over time. It keeps the lips hydrated as promised bu Bobbi Brown. Having said that, what works for me is also that despite the softness it provides, the texture doesn’t migrate or move around too much on the lips. Yes, it does transfer because of the satin finish, but you do not feel the slip on the lips.

Pigmentation: Pigmentation is quite good. A single layer gives a full wash of colour. Like I said, as a habit, we tend to go over our lips a couple of time, but that isn’t really required. The colour is fully opaque and hides my lip pigmentation very well.

Lasting Power:  The lipstick gives you about 4.5-5 hours of wear. However, a meal will make it disappear unless you were doing finger foods. This shade does not leave a stain either. So, one would definitely need re-application mid day.

Okay, to put things in perspective – the price point of these lip colors is not the easiest to swallow. At $35+tax – these are expensive. And at that price point – there is a huge variety. However, having said that, I think Bobbi Brown products are kind of timeless and ageless in their appeal. No, I’m not saying her products are for mature women or something like that. I just feel that her products are like a refined wine – they are classy and you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Love how her colours don’t run over the top. Even a fuchsia pink in her line will have a sophisticated spin to it. I think, one really needs to check this new line of lipsticks. It’s a welcome change of pace – especially for office goers or people who shy away from loud colours or who just like their lips to stay hydrated full day. I know I do!
