Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick – Nectar Review

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick – Nectar Review

And I am “BACK WITH BOBBI”!! I reviewed Bobbi’s Shimmer Brick in Wild Rose a couple of days back and today I bring to you my first Shimmer Brick purchase – Nectar. Yet another coral product??? Common! Don’t groan!! We love corals! By the way, more coral lipsticks coming up soon. Watch this space!

Yes, you may ask why I would buy another one when I already had one, cannot possibly use 20.6 gm of shimmer in this lifetime. Well, its all a big misunderstanding. As you can see my love for all things Bobbi – I was dying to try the Shimmer Brick but couldn’t get my hands on it. So, when I saw this online, I quickly zapped it up. However, in the interim, my hubby picked one up while abroad because he knew I had been wanting to try this (it was on the list handed to him!!)! So, both pretty much landed at my doorsteps together.

Not only will I be doing a review on Nectar – I will also be doing a comparison post between Nectar and Wild Rose.

As I have shared with you before – Bobbi’s shimmer bricks are a multi-tasking product – a blush, a highlighter, an eye shadow – all in one. Shimmer bricks are handmade in Italy by pressing five different shades of “ultra-luxe pure pearl pigments” into one pan and double-baking them, the brand explains, and a variety of highlighter shades have been available through the years, some permanent and some limited.

Product Description:

Details on Nectar:  This shimmering, brush-on powder creates a soft, coral glow. Works well with neutral and peach blush shades.

To apply: Sweep the Face Blender Brush through all five shades of Shimmer Brick Compact and dust lightly on cheekbones after blush. Focus on applying shimmer on the top of cheekbones – where light naturally hits the face – for the most flattering look.

Shimmer Brick Tip:  Nothing lights up the face like a touch of shimmer. For skin that looks lit-from within, focus on applying shimmer brick on top of the cheekbones. To highlight eyes, apply the lightest shade in the compact just under the brow bone.

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick – Nectar 2

Price:

$42.00 or 10.3 gm of product.

I purchased it for about INR 2400 in April 2013.

(Yeah – dollar rate was comparatively favourable!)

Packaging:

The shimmer brick comes housed in a black box with a decent-sized mirror.  There is no brush.  The brick is hoised in the centre of the box protected with a styrofoam cushion. I suggest to retain the the styrofoam cushion to prevent any breakage.  The back label states clearly, “Shimmer brick powders are fragile. Please handle with care.”

The compact comes packaged in a cardboard box. The same is not sealed.

The product consists of 5 strips of colour ranging from champagne to coral to pink to peach and coming together, they blend to give a coral look packing lots of sheen! Refer to the swatches on my NC35 skin.

I feel the pigmentation to be fairly good that can be built easily. However, suggest you try it with a soft hand and build slowly.

For the Cheeks – I tried using it as a blush on my cheeks – the colour payoff is okay – not very high, not very low – refer my face pic as part of the collage – only Nectar has been used on the cheeks.

I am NC 30-35. On a lighter skin, the oomph factor would definitely accentuate. An alternative for the medium/olive skin person could be to use this over a coral/peach/pink blush. Refer my single face pic wherein I have used Nectar over a blush (NARS Deep Throat) – it gives colour as well as sheen – and is my favorite combo currently.

You could also use the lightest shade in the brick as a highlighter for the brow bone or for the area under the eye. The lightest strip looks white but has a champagne colour with a slight tinge of pink. (Refer swatches – second swatch from the right).

For the eyes – I like how the strips in Nectar have fairly distinct colours (as opposed to the colours in Wild Rose Shimmer Brick). This allows one to actually use the strips as an eyeshadow.  I have tried using the lightest colour with a deeper colour (from the brick) in the outer lid. The beauty of this brick is that I really do not have to spend much time blending it because the colours naturally blend in seamlessly.

On the lips – This is not an advertised usage but you could use the brick to dab a little shimmer on your lips and top it with a nude lip gloss to give an extra oomph to your lips!

Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick 3 -Nectar vs Wild Rose

To sum this up for you:

Pros of Bobbi Brown  Shimmer Brick – Nectar:

  • The colours are beautiful, distinct and duo-chromatic – I hope you can make that out in the pictures.
  • The powder is extremely finely milled.
  • Shimmer is not at all chunky or glittery, but very fine.
  • Gives a pleasant coral hue blush to the cheeks.
  • Multipurpose product – use as blush, eyeliner, highlighter.
  • Easy to apply.
  • Has a decent-sized mirror for touch up on the go. However, I would be wary of carrying it around in my bag – for fear that the strips might break with impact.
  • Did not break me out.
  • Decent pigmentation.

Cons of Bobbi Brown  Shimmer Brick – Nectar:

  • The shimmer does accentuate pores a little.
  • The price is a definite con.
  • Too much quantity – not likely to finish this in this lifetime!

Grande Finale:

IMBB Rating: Product – 5

I am not splitting the ratings here because I genuinely feel that the product is fantastic and it works well for the Indian skin tone and will prove way more versatile than Wild Rose – be it in its use as a blush or eyeshadow or highlighter. It is able to do justice to its job of multi-tasking.  Refer to the comparative swatches – top is Wild Rose and bottom is Nectar. Just note two things – because of the shimmer and the angle of my arm, the pigmentation and shimmer on both products looks drastically different – it isn’t.  However, I do find Nectar to have more variety and versatility in colour.

Will I Repurchase Bobbi Brown  Shimmer Brick – Nectar?

NO!!! I am not likely to finish this and if I do, I might want to try the bronzing brick or whatever new comes out in the market in 20 years time (that is approximately how long I see it to be around in my stash).

Do you really need it? Now, this is totally dependent on your personal preference. For someone who loves MAC skinfinish, this could be an alternate Holy Grail material. Like Rati commented yesterday on my review of Wild Rose, she loves shimmer and finds the Bronzing Brick to be a staple.  However, for someone like me, with oily skin and open pores, its something I use when I want a little diva-ish oomph but not part of my daily routine.

Final words – try it before you buy it! For me, Nectar has been money well spent!
