Clinique Butter Shine Lipstick – Chocolate Ice

Hi everybody,

I haven’t reviewed any lipstick in a looooong time and so if there’s one product I desperately wanted to review now, it’s definitely got to be a lipstick. The lipstick I’m reviewing is from Clinique, from the Butter Shine range of lipsticks in the shade Chocolate Ice and the shade number is 454. read on to find more about it.

My take on Clinique butter shine lipstick in Chocolate Ice:

Packaging: the first thing I love about Clinique lipsticks is of course the amazing packaging.it comes in a simple yet classy silver metallic packaging. And I don’t think I need to describe the packaging much because I guess everyone is aware of how wonderfully packaged Clinque lipsticks are LOL.
Texture: the texture of this lipstick is soft, creamy, and light like a balm. It almost feels like I’ve applied a lip balm only. It doesn’t feel heavy on lips like some lipsticks do. And yes, they call it “Butter shine” for a reason. 😀

The lipstick is so smooth in texture and its application is even smoother. It does not settle into lines on lips and neither does the lipstick bleed.

Shade: the shade appears to be a true dark chocolate color in the tube. But because the lipstick is super sheer, when the lipstick is applied on the lips, it looks like a medium brown color. All in all, it is a very wearable color and one of those shades that can be worn all year round.
Buildable: the lipstick is sheer but easily buildable. You can wear one coat of this lipstick and it will give a beautiful glossy look on the lips and more coats can be worn accordingly to give lips a full-fledged chocolate brown color.

Longevity: now that’s the only disappointing thing about this lipstick. This is not one of those long stay lipsticks that stay on lips for 10 hours or even more. It stays on my lips for around 3-4 hours. But when I bought this lipstick, I wasn’t expecting it to be a long stay lippie either, because obviously the more creamy the lipstick in texture, the less the staying power.

Pros of Clinique Butter Shine lipstick in the shade Chocolate Ice:

• Beautiful chocolate brown color
• Sheer but buildable.
• Can be worn as a lip gloss too.
• Classy packaging
• Compared to the quality it offers, it is quite reasonably priced at $16.
• Does not settle into fine lines on lips
• Doesn’t have any weird scent
• Super, super, super soft and creamy in texture
• Worth every penny spent on it.
• Very light in texture; almost feels as though I’ve only applied a lip balm on the lips.

Cons of Clinique Butter Shine lipstick in the shade Chocolate Ice:

• Does not stay on my lips for longer than 3-4 hours (though I don’t mind re-applying the lipstick every few hours or so)
• This lipstick has a sheen and though I don’t mind the sheen ( in fact I like it), people who like matte lipsticks can skip this lipstick.
• This is not at all a neutral lipstick and hence, shouldn’t be confused for one. It is a chocolate brown color. The reason I am stating this is because a lot of people buy browns because they come in neutral/n*des group, but this a chocolate color only.
• When worn over a lip balm, it does not stay on lips for 3 hours even
• And lastly, the lipstick doesn’t leave much of a stain behind. I know this point doesn’t count as a real con but, it does for me. I like my lipsticks that leave a staim behind so that even if I forget/ don’t have the time to re-apply the lipstick, my lips don’t look gross.

Will I repurchase it/ do I recommend Clinique Butter Shine Lipstick – Chocolate Ice?

I will obviously purchase more lipsticks from Clinique in the future, just not this shade because I realized just a few days ago while organizing my lippies-stash that I have way too many chocolate browns than I even need. But I will recommend it to all those looking a nice chocolate brown lipstick. And yes, it’s worth all the money spent on it because nothing can beat a Clinique lipstick in terms of the quality.

  1. Great review, Trisha! 🙂 Through the color looks chocolate brown in the tube, it looks more orange-ish in the swatch and on your lips! I like it! 🙂

    1. yes Padmashree, it’s different than how it appears in the tube. this is the reason why I bought this lipstick. 🙂 🙂
