How To Cut Side Swept Bangs At Home: Do It Yourself

Here is a tutorial for you ladies on how to trim your bangs at home. I would recommend this to ladies who already have bangs. It is because if you are getting bangs for the first time, it would be advisable to get it done at a professional salon. I have been trimming my bangs since like past 5 years , so I am pretty used to it. You can do this when you don’t have time for an appointment at the salon. Trust me guys, it has been really tough to pose for pictures at one side and explain and cut my hair on the other, but still I managed somehow because I love IMBB 🙂

So, we will start up with the things you need:

  • Sharp scissors (opt for a pair which are specially designed for hair cutting as using your regular ones may cause even more split ends).
  • Rubber bands.
  • A comb.
  • A few tic-tac pins to clip up your extra hair so that they don’t disturb you while cutting your bangs.

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE: TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK ( if your hands shiver at times or if you are not sure about cutting your own hair, then please do not go ahead with this).

This is my first picture of the tutorial to show you how my bangs look. The bigger they become, the worst they start look. Bangs are always cute when kept short. I trim my bangs twice in a month.

this is how my bangs look before cutting

Step 1:

Comb out your hair on your face, especially the front hair so that you can have an idea how long are your bangs and how short do you want to cut them. I would request you not to trim your bangs with wet hair because when your hair is wet, they look longer and after cutting they look really short, so do not spray water on your hair. And if possible blow dry your hair before cutting so you have an exact idea how your bangs would look.

step 1

Step 2:

Keep you hair open. This is the measurement for ideal bangs. From the exact point where you eyebrows start to curve, hold that point and drag your finger upward vertically. Take the hair from there on and push the remaining hair with the rest of your hair. Do that on both the sides with your left and right eyebrow and the hair that remain in your hand would be the bangs that you will cut.

step 2

Step 3:

step 3

Push up the rest of your hair and tie them into a ponytail so that you can properly cut your bangs without any disturbance. You can clip the remaining strands of your hair with the help of those tic-tac pins.

Step 4:

step 4

Now, you have the exact amount of hair you want to cut. Comb your hair on your face and hold the bottom edge of your hair in between your index and your middle finger. Hold them tight and take the sharp scissors in your hand. Now you and the scissor both have their work to do.

Step 5:

step 5

Now, take the scissors and hold them diagonal on your hair like I have done in the picture. Side swept bangs always look good when they are diagonal. Cutting them straight will give you some different look. They are shorter near your forehead and the length goes on increasing when they reach your ears. I have left-sided swept bangs. Now at the beginning , you just have to trim 1/4th inch. Slowly  you can go on cutting and get your desired height, but just do not chop it off 1 or 2 inches directly, that will not give you a proper look. Open and close your scissors and go cutting it diagonally.

Step 6:

step 6

Now, still if the bangs look longer, you can again repeat step 5. Mine were longer, so again cut them diagonally by opening and closing  scissors. I will go diagonal from right to left as my bangs go on the left side.

Step 7:

step 7

Now, I have got my desired length of my bangs. Comb them up on your face and you will have to get that diagonal line on your hair like in the picture.

Step 8:

step 8

After getting the exact diagonal shape on your hair, if there is some big hair let to cut, cut them to get a neat even look.

Step 9:

step 9

Now, hold your bangs between your index and middle finger and hold your scissors vertically in your hands.  Place the scissor at the very bottom edge of your bangs and open and close the scissor vertically and cut little parts. This will prevent your bangs from looking freshly trimmed. This step is optional.

Step 10:

step 10

Now, your bangs are ready!!To set them, push them on the side with your fingers like I am doing in the picture and see to it that your bangs are over the forehead or they are 1-2 cms below your forehead.

So, guys here is the end of the tutorial and here’s the final look of how my bangs look.

  12. Cool! great job at creating the pictorial..I’ve always been doing my own side swept bangs and layers as well! *jai ho* Parents, friends and guy are always like how and why, but it’s fun to do your own hair! But yes the warnings you gave at the start are very important, i would also like to add that first try cutting paper to practice and graduate to wigs that you get in stores and only when you feel you have a knack with handling scissors start with your hair!!

    1. *thankyou* *thankyou* *thankyou* Sukanya *hifive* me too doing my layers at home itself but that was even more difficult to explain with pics so didn’t go for that *nababana* yeah nice tip never thought about that… *nababana* *nababana* yeah its total fun cutting your own hair *happydance* *happydance*

  16. Hi Saloni, the tutorial is really helpful and im going to try this on this weekend. Also, one more question…I read ur post on rebonding hair at home..it is really very helpful but am not able to find the boards anywhere.. Could you please tell me that where can I find boards??

  17. Great job done Saloni!! *clap* *clap* *clap* Your effort with the tutorial is visible to the readers!

I too have side swept bangs….I may try it but honestly, still too scared to do so!! *scared* *scared* *scared* I like how you have put the disclaimers coz yes, one can try it but there is still technique to it which you have mastered with practise!

  18. Loved this. Btw, I have to tell the same thing to every hairstylist –
*do not cut it too short when wet as it only looks shorter after the hair dries*
Thank heavens you have mentioned that as even professionals cannot seem to understand this point! GAHH!!

  19. Love this. came up at the perfect time. I usually trim my own but I do them straight and they had grown out so I tried this instead and it helped so much!
