DIY: Making Eyeshadow Base at Home

DIY: Making Eyeshadow Base at Home

I’m new to the world of makeup, just started to learn the techniques. So I’m a little afraid of spending a lot on expensive brands, what if the shades or the type of cosmetics don’t work for me. But I love makeup and have started to experiment with various things.

I’ve fallen in love with eyeshadows. They make the eyes look so vibrant and beautiful. But eyeshadows don’t work without a good base. And eyeshadow bases are also pretty expensive. So I searched the net and made my own version of eyeshadow base at home, and it has worked wonderfully for me.

Once I become pretty good and used to with makeup I’d love to try out various brands and colours.
For now here goes my version of eyeshadow base made at home.
ingredients
You’ll need:
1) An empty jar. A tiny one would be good.
2) Aloe vera gel
3) A thick cream or any moisturizer that works for you.
4) Foundation or concealer. I used my Maybelline BB cream because I don’t like the way it looks on my face, so thought of using it in this rather than throwing it away.
5) Compact or a loose powder that you like. You may skip this also.
ingredients mix
This is all you’d need. Mix all the ingredients well and make a nice paste with a clean spoon. Try not to use your hands. If you’re using compact, crush it well and mix it well with other ingredients.

And here are some swatches:
I’ve used Maybelline copper brown quad. On the right side are the swatches without the base, and on the left with the base. See how the base makes the colours more visible.

Here on my palm I’ve used pink eyeshadow from maybelline’s wine pink quad. See how bright the colour looks with the base under it.

So there you have, an easy eyeshadow base made at home. I hope you like it and it works for you.

  1. absolutely lovely! have u tried its staying power? i mean how long does the eye shadow stay on lids with this base underneath?

  2. Very useful post..! i have a maybelline bb creams in radiance and nude. unfortunately they didn’t work for me.!! i will turn them into a E/S base.. yahoo..!!!!

  3. Wow!! my first post at IMBB 😀
Thanks for putting this up.. and this soon 🙂

@aparajita its staying power is pretty good as compared to applying it without a base..
on my eyes the shadow looks bright for 4 to 5 hours when it not too hot and fades away mildly after that..

my eyelids are not too oily and in moderate temperatures the eyeshadow stays pretty well.

  4. I’m very sorry i forgot to mention.. try not to use a very heavy cream in this.
It might not mix with the aloe vera gel.. a water based cream would be best..

    sorry for the mistake..

  5. Vow a fab idea dear… First of all Eye primers are nt readily available here n if yes very xpensive,,, I also don’t waste money on xpensive products jst like u said in ur post…. bt this is a great idea u hv given all of us,,, I will try it…. Thanks fr sharing!!!! 🙂

  6. thanks for this very easy DIY. I am with Natasha in the fact that the ones in the stores can be expensive. Since I love to shop i am going to buy chotu dabbas for my DIY concoctions 🙂

  7. Well Rati even I don’t exactly know how it works. But at first I made the base with just the cream and foundation cos I thought aloe vera is water based and it won’t gel with the rest.
But the base came out very creamy and it made my lids oily.
So I added in aloe vera gel and compact and it worked really. It made the base stick 😛 to my lids pretty well, it doesn’t look oily at all.. and shadow works great over it. It can get messy it the combo is not right. like oil based things don’t go with aloe vera gel.

I used a local brand called aloe soft.

  9. Wow, what an amazing DIY, Sumathi! I find eyeshadow bases to be terribly expensive especially because I don’t wear eye shadows on a daily basis. This will be a handy thing to make whenever I plan to amp up my eyes. 😀 Considering the fact that it has no preservatives, how long can we keep it?

  10. Jabberwocky, I store it in the refrigerator for about a month..
I make it in very little quantities and apply it almost every other day even when i’m applying only a highlighter.. i’m trying to learn to do makeup.. so i try something everyday 🙂
on a daily basis i don’t use an eyeshadow, but apply a little bit of highlighter
to make my eyes look brighter..

  11. thanks for sharing this nice and useful DIY sumathi. plus i have all the ingredients at home. i am off to making it right now.
