I wanted to share certain Do It Yourself tricks, which I have personally tried and found to be quite effective. Nothing that needs expertise or is a hole-in-wallet agent, just plain simple do-it-yourself tips:

Body Care

1. Body Oil

I love body oils; they just make me feel so pampered. I failed in the quest to find some good body oil therefore I decided to make one myself. Here’s how I did it –
make body oil at home Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips
40 ml Almond oil
40ml Olive oil
20ml Jojoba oil
10 drops essential oil/oils of your choice (Rose, Lavender are my favourite)
Put all ingredients expect for the essential oils, in a glass bowl, microwave on low for around one minute and let it cool. Put the essential oils and transfer the oil   into a pretty plastic bottle. You can put dried flowers in the bottle so that it looks cute. I have also tied a pink ribbon around the neck of my bottle to make it cuter.

2.Milk and Bread

NO NO! You don’t have to eat it. milk and bread1 Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty TipsSoak 4-5 bread slices in about one cup of pre boiled milk (kacha doodh) and let it stand for 10 minutes. The bread absorbs the milk and becomes soggy. Crush the bread in the milk and apply all over body. Wait for it to dry and then scrub off. Regular use improves complexion, makes skin clear and supple. It can be used on babies too. Mom used to apply this on me when I was 5 and it works even now. It also removes tan but the process is very very slow. I also use it on my face sometimes.

Facial Care

1. Almonds and Milk

almond Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty TipsSoak almonds in ¼ cup milk for two hours. After that remove the almonds and crush it with a mortar and pestle. Add two drops honey and your scrub is ready. Almond nourishes while the milk absorbed by it cleans the pores from within and honey moisturises. At least I get lots of compliments on the days when I do this, because when you glow, it shows. icon razz Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon razz Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon razz Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips

2. Tea Bags

I have a mug of green tea daily. tea bags Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty TipsWhy waste the teabag after you are done with the tea. After you are done with the brewing of tea (before the adding of sugar, mind you) keep the tea bag aside. The few uses are –

  • Keep it in the freezer for 20 minutes, place on your tired eyes. Immediate relaxation also helps with puffiness of eyes.
  • Let the tea bag cool for some time, cut it open and empty the contents in a bowl, add little honey and it becomes a face pack. Honey nourishes and green tea soothes and makes the skin supple. If you have acne, skip honey, add little rose water to it and take tiny amounts and massage on face. It gives mild scrubbing and helps in acne. For better results with acne, add 1-2 drops of tree tea oil.

3. Gram Flour and Turmeric

turmeric Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty TipsI used to travel a lot, that too back to backgram flour Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips and after every trip my skin went from bad to worse. So finally I found a solution. I mix besan (gram flour) and haldi (turmeric) in the ratio 3:1 and store it in a plastic jar, sturdy enough for travel. This acts as a multipurpose thing.  A little amount mixed with little water acts as a face wash, it cleanses the face really well and usually I have to apply moisturiser afterwards.

The same thing mixed with rosewater becomes a purifying face pack, leave on for 15 minutes and wash off. If you have acne, you can put 2-3 drops of lime juice along with rose water. During winters, curd replaces rose water and a nourishing face pack is ready. It is now a must have in my travel bag.

Hair Care

1. Vitamin E Capsules

Although I have normal hair, my hair tends toVit E Capsules Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips misbehave during winters. It looks dry and feels coarse. My only saviour then is Vit E capsules.  I use Evion 400iu , around 10 of them (hardly costs 20 bucks).

Cut open the capsules an empty them in a bowl, apply the ends of hair , say like the last  5 inches of your hair in addition to lightly oiling the scalp. Leave overnight, wash with any normal shampoo. Hair will feel like cotton for the following few days. This is to be periodically and not on a regular basis, depending upon the extent of hair damage.

homemade butter Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips2. Homemade Butter

Ghar ka makhhan (homemade butter) works wonders for dry hair, and it also thickens hair. But it has to be homemade and not Amul kinds. Take the appropriate amount as per your hair length and apply to scalp and hair. Leave on for 30-40 minutes. Wash as usual. NOTE – washing it off is a pain, it doesn’t come off so easily and a lot of effort is needed. All oil-well beauties (read oily hair people); please forget that you ever read this. It is not for you.

3. Fenugreek Seedsfenugreek seeds Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips

Crush a handful of meethi (fenugreek seeds) and leave it in your hair oil bottle. It strengthens and nourishes hair and also helps in case of dandruff.

4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil in which curry leaves have been burnt helps in premature greying and also helps darken normal hair (I will vouch for this, specially). I was attacked by premature greying few years back and this totally took charge of it.

So this is it, hope it will be of some help to you. I have normal skin and hair; it goes mad sometimes but nothing that can’t be taken care of. No medical conditions. So I just wanted to let you know, whatever is written is truly personal opinion and judgement. I will request you to exercise your intelligence and wisdom, before you try any of it. Neither IMBB nor I shall be held responsible if they misfire. icon biggrin Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon biggrin Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon biggrin Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon biggrin Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips icon biggrin Do it yourself Makeup and Beauty Tips

this is how i do it -
( a handful of curry leaves for about 200 ml of coconut oil)
take coconut oil in a kadai , wait for it to warm up a little till you see the fumes , meanwhile wash the curry leaves and lay them on a tissue paper so that the excess water is absorbed . add the curry leaves to the oil, let it boil boil until the leaves settle down at the bottom of the kada.let it cool , strain and use.
(the colour of the oil changes to green)

Hi!! First of all this is a great atricle Naina. :)
I too suffer from premature graying :( I have tried many so called “cures” but didnt work at all. Can u pls pls explain a bit more of uur coconut oil treatment above. Like the proportion of oil, time the mixure has to be boiled, when to apply and keep it in hair for how long….. Sorry to sound a bit (!!) demanding but i am really desperate to stop the graying.
