How to Make Dry Shampoo at Home

Hello Gorgeous Ladies,
Remember the last time when your alarm clock did not buzz and you woke up late and were in a hurry to rush somewhere and you didn’t have time to wash your hair? Dry shampoo comes to rescue in these situations. It is quick, easy and hassle free to use a dry shampoo when you are having a bad hair day and you don’t have time to wash your hair (I know it’s really irritating to be carrying around oily/unmanageable hair throughout the day). I did some research and figured out few ways of making dry shampoo at home. Today I will be demonstrating a simple solution to this problem. Just read along to make your own dry shampoo at home using easily available ingredients. 🙂

Dry Shampoo are designed to work without water. They are typically based on powders such as starch, silica or talc, and are intended to physically absorb excess sebum from the hair before being brushed out. Those with dark hair may prefer to use brown powders such as cocoa or carob powder. (Wikipedia)

cocoa powder

I will be penning down 4 different methods. You can choose whichever you like 🙂
Things you will need:
• Cocoa powder.
• Wheat flour and salt.
• Oatmeal and Baking soda.
• Fuller’s earth or any other clay.
Steps for making dry shampoo at home:
fullers earth

Method 1:

Take a little bit of cocoa powder on your fingers and dab it using your fingers on the roots of your greasy hair that need attention. Blend it through your hair evenly till you can see visible reduction in greasiness. This cocoa powder will absorb the excess oil and dirt. Finally brush your hair. You will notice that this works great and reduces the greasiness to a great extent. It also gives a little bit of volume to the hair. Cocoa powder works best for dark hair as it won’t leave on a white film which other white colored dry shampoos might do. For those who have light/medium colored hair, can try cornflour instead of cocoa powder. The cocoa powder even leaves a yummy chocolate smell which solves one more problem of your hair smelling weird  I personally prefer this method over all others and simply love the outcome.

Method 2:

Combine wheat flour and salt in 2:1 ratio (e.g. for 1 teaspoon of wheat flour, add ½ teaspoon of salt). Store this mixture in a salt cellar and use it as described above instead of cocoa powder as your dry shampoo. Wheat flour also works good on dark hair.

Method 3:

Grind the oatmeal and make a course powder. Combine powdered oatmeal and baking soda in 1:1 ratio (e.g. for 1 teaspoon of powdered oatmeal, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda). Store this mixture in a salt cellar and use it as described above instead of cocoa powder as your dry shampoo.

Method 4:

Dab some fuller’s earth as described in Method 1 instead of cocoa powder on the roots of your hair. (This is my least preferred option because sometimes fuller’s earth can leave behind an unwanted smell)
Tip: If you want your hair to smell nice after you use your home-made dry shampoo, here’s a trick! 😉 Just spray a tiny amount of perfume on your hair brush and then brush your hair with this brush. A small amount of perfume will not harm your hair. 🙂

Final verdict:
Dry shampoo is a quick fix for your bad hair day when you don’t have time to wash your hair. The ingredients needed are easily available and this is a cheaper alternative to store bought dry shampoos. Store bought dry shampoos are mostly white in color (made from cornflour) and tend to leave a white film on your hair after application if you have dark hair. So by customizing the ingredients depending on your hair color home can ward off this problem. So go ahead beautiful ladies and give this a try and say goodbye to bad hair days. 🙂

  1. I Never knew there was a thing called as “dry shampoo” at the first glance i thought ur going to talk abt shikakai etc.. Very informative.. BTW i have a doubt.. does this dry shampoos work during summers when we sweat lot?

    1. Hi Raji.. thanks for the comment.. well you have to use a very small amount of powder (any1 of the ones specified) and the dry shampoo holds sweat/sebum in the hair so you won’t have greasy looking hair even if you sweat but i think if you sweat a lot, you can try the oatmeal method.

  2. I love dry shampoo. 🙂 its such a saviour. I shampoo my hair normally 2ce a week and dry shampoo 2ce more. My hair is alot better after i stopped shampooing it regularly.

  3. Yeah.. i used to shampoo my hair every single day but since i have started using these dry shampoos, i have reduced the frequency to every alternate day and this has improved my hair texture. 🙂

  4. Great tips!! The cocoa powder tip is irrestible. Wat I do is sprinkle some talcum powder on on my brush nd brush my hair..nd if I have more time I simply take a blush brush swirl it in talc tap off the excess nd brush my scalp.. Maybe bcoz I hv dark brown hair, I have nva witnessed a white residue

  5. Oh god this article is such a savior..there has been too many ocassions when I havent been able to shampoo and HATED the feeling of goin ot with dirty hair…..thankssss for this very informative article 🙂

  6. Hi vijayeta.. one thing i would like to highlight here is that we are not letting the dry shampoo stay in the hair. after application, we have to brush it off. The salt will help in absorbing moisture and sebum and hence will prep up dull hair and using salt in hair (that too small quantity) will not harm hair.. in fact sea salt is used in many hair products like sprays.. and not to forget if you are doubtful, you can always switch to a different method..

  7. thanx a lot mayuri! My hair gets oily very often.. I used 2 use baby powder before 😀 but wasnt too happy with it 🙁 i’ll definitely try cocoa method 🙂

  11. Thanks so much for this post Mayuri!!! My hair so so damn oily and I can’t go through a single day without washing my hair. I can’t even start on how much trouble this has gotten me into. These tips will help me a lot. 🙂 🙂 🙂

BTW, does anyone know if any dry shampoo is available in India??

    1. If you are talking about packaged dry shampoo then there is one from Lush.. it is made from corn starch.. but it tends to leave a whitish film on dark hair.. but u can try it out. 🙂

  12. and all i did was rub in some Johnson`s baby powder through my hair 😀 wow. okay. These are really awesome ideas though. But if I am ever asked for my opinion ,I`d say , do not get addicted to dry shampooing as using it in consecutive days might give you some hairfall. happened in my case.(maybe school tests related stress had somethng to do with it 😛 now its over phewies 😛 ) Cocoa powder, here I come 😀 😀

    1. Thanks for the suggestion Arja 🙂 yea you are right.. dry shampoo must not be used on consecutive days. it should be used occasionally when you are in a hurry and your hair is oily. 🙂

    1. Hi Mansi..If your hair is dry but scalp is oily and tends to secrete sebum, you can use a dry shampoo but remember dry shampoo is not an alternative for washing hair.. it is just a rescue mechanism for days where you dont have time to wash your hair. 🙂 hope this helps.. sorry for the delayed response dear.

  13. Hey Mayuri.. thnks a ton fow ur..awesome..post! n i have light brown hair?
