Estee Lauder Signature Eye Shadow Quad in Truffle

Some products from high-end brands get popular just by piggy-backing on their brand’s position in people’s mind even if they fall far behind regarding the quality that one is “used to” from the brand. This eye shadow quad was everywhere a year or so ago and even to this date, I see it on all online shopping sites like AllCosmeticsWholeSale, Shopping.Yahoo, Amazon, ebay, etc.  It is even among the sold-out products on Estee Lauder’s website! I frankly don’t understand the reason behind it. Quality wise, it is not the best that Estee Lauder has to offer, but I’m not writing this just to bash it.  I’m writing it to just share what I do when I find a palette in which I like just 1-2 shades. Let me first just tell you about this particular palette in case you want to go for it.

This is what the website says about the eye shadow quads they offer:

Benefits:

  • Expertly coordinated shades.
  • Complete look in one compact.
  • Perfectly Matched Shades.
  • Expertly coordinated shadows in a collection of textures—from soft matte to high pearl, all in one place.
  • The 4 shades work together for maximum effect.

Exceptional Formula:

  • Silky, microfine powder.
  • Glides on freely, blends seamlessly.
  • Lasts all day, color-true and crease-free.
  • Highlights, contours and emphasizes your eyes with ease.

Get the Look:

  • These quads have light, medium and deep shades that work perfectly with our dramatic look.

Formula Facts:

  • Dermatologist-tested.
  • Ophthalmologist-tested.
  • Fragrance-free.

Price:

$ 35 on its website.

These are the colors it has:

Swatch 1

  • A soft cream with gold undertones.
  • A dark golden.
  • A matte deep brown.
  • A dark green with gold undertones.

Swatch 3

Why this palette is not that great:

  • The colors are picked up a bit too randomly! I wouldn’t think of pairing them together.
  • The brown and green have an “insane” amount of fallout.  Its too soft for an Estee Lauder product! I can’t even believe that this is a branded product looking at the texture of these two!
  • You cannot apply 3 of these shades on the eyelid, brown, green and cream on their own. The green is too muddy, very unflattering for Indian skin color. The brown looks like a dark circle, it renders your concealer o a complete waste! You can only apply them when you have something else to blend and balance them out with.
  • I honestly can keep going on and on.

But having said that, I really believe that every eyeshadow palette can still be utilised and that none deserves to be thrown away while they have still not expired. It’s not fair for them to sit all alone in the corner looking longingly at you and expecting to be picked up every time your hand lingers near them, but alas, you end up picking your “safe” palette.
So, I look at this palette again and try to salvage them.  I want to know if there is any way in which I can still utilize these colors.

This was my chain of thought:

Golden Cream:  “This one I’m already using as my brow highlighter and cheek highlighter; in fact, it’s my favourite highlighter I have EVER used, so this is fine. Next!”

Gold: “This is too dark to go all over my lid, makes my already deep set eyes “more deep.”  Wait a minute! Maybe, I can apply it all over my lid and then put a pink matte shade over it and blend them together, and wow!! I have a new party color! It’s not all gold, not all pink, but something in between and oh that is just gorgeous!”

Brown: “Oh, you poor shade, you just make me look like someone punched me in the eye! But, I can see you are very dark and matte.  You can be a good crease color! When I want to add a little depth to my light browns without adding any shimmer, I can use you and also you make an excellent brow color too! Why didn’t I think of this before?!?Adding pure black was making my eyebrows look too strong, I can now tone it down mixing this brown in with the black, that’ll give my brows a more natural look!”

Green:  “Hmmm, you look like someone dropped you in mud and forgot to dust you off, you need a good wash! Wait! Wash?!?! Maybe I can “wash” you down by mixing you with a little bit of eye shadow base or a mixing medium and use you as an eyeliner. Wow! That does look very workable now! Great, now I can save my money on that green eyeliner I was eyeing! In fact, this technique I can also apply with that brown shade as well, two eye liners in one quad!”

You get my point, I’m hoping? There is always some other non-routine way of using your product.  If it has too much fall out, use it as an eyeliner mixed with some base. If you don’t like the color, play it down/up with another color. Experiment. Rethink. Re-engineer the traditional view of looking at products. You will almost and always find some unique way of utilising it.  This is one look I finally came up with after “re-aligning” the colors in this particular quad.

The gold color is all over my eye lid, the dark brown I have used with a very light hand as my crease color to deepen the look (more visible in the image on top; with the eye looking down). The cream is on my brow bone and the green I have mixed with some NYX Eye Shadow Base in White to make it easy to apply as an eye liner. I finished the look with some mascara and kajal pencil.

So ladies, before you discard a product or leave it untouched, just stop and think again, maybe some angle previously hidden will become clear to you. This could also help you in saving some real cash, by finding multiple uses for one product. Let your experimenting instincts stir up some new ideas.

  3. Hey nice review. You seem to be a pro when it comes to eye makeup :). Can you suggest a good eye liner, mascara and a aye shadow palette for a beginner like me. I have no clue where to start.

    1. Thanku Soujanya!! :teddy:
A good eyeliner depends on what u r comfy with, if its a brush style applicator then go for Lakme Insta Liner, if pen felt tip style then Lakme has 1 with a felt tip too, Revlon also has a gud felt tip liner.. if its Gel liners u want then try the Maybelline 1 or the Loreal 1
Mascara – Lakme, Maybelline, Lotus Herbals or Street Wear have some affordable + good 1s
Eye Shadow palette – Faces, Revlon, Colorbar have gud 4 in 1 or 5 in 1 colors of palettes, go to a mall, where thd wud b more than 1 makeup counters n browse thru, swatch th shades, u will surely find somethin that wud appeal to u

  4. I do like the matte brown. And the golden colour. The brown might not be for everyone but it’s the kind of matte I have been looking for ages!

  5. I really like the brown color! I like the look of this palette also! 😛
Agreed, I can’t say about the texture and fallout, but the colors are wonderful! 🙂
