Hi Everybody!

I have been following IMBB for over a month now and my primary reason has been to be able to build up a basic makup collection for myself. I have oily skin (By the end of the day I have more oil on my face than an Iraqi oil well), prone to pimples and allergies with scars of past battles with acne to show. I would like the makeup I buy to be mostly everyday work wear buy also pull me through on occasional party/night wear.I have a shortlist thanks to all the reviews on IMBB. Which ones do you think will work the best for my needs? I would be very grateful for a opinion from all of you.

1. Primer: Bourjois flower perfection smoothing primer OR Bodyshop pearl radiance primer
2. Foundation: MAC pro longwear OR Bodyshop extra virgin minerals foundation (will TBS foundation be too oily for my skin type?)
3. Concealer: MAC studio finish(Could not see beyond this one)
4. Eyeshadow: I picked out 5 from the must have list here on IMBB- Rice paper, Carbon. Expensive pink, Twinks and Soft Brown
5. Lippies: I don’t feel confident wearing a lot of colour on my lips so looking at MAC Fanfare or See sheer.
6. Others: I have the Elizabeth Arden Mascara, Maybelline Gel Liner and Hashmi Kajal which are one of the few things that work perfectly for my super sensitive, contact lens eyes. Also a Maybelline compact and TBS eyeshadow brush.

I have never owned much makeup before, so needless to say I am no expert at putting it on. Also, I have planned a 3 hr stopover at Dubai airport this week just to be able to buy cosmetics at lower prices. Do you think I can manage this haul at Mac in 3 hrs? I have very little experience with buying colour cosmetics and have no idea what NC/NW(not sure what that means) shade I am.
Also, I am getting engaged next month, should I also stock up for that leave it upto the professional, considering that I undersant very little myself.

I would really appreciate any help I can get from all of you . πŸ™‚ Β Thanks a ton!

    1. Hi Suvarna,
U can buy everything from MAC from the airport but avoid buying the Concealer and foundi. Better, get it applied and then take samples of two colors for both. I am also not an expert but can tell you whatever I know :).

      1. Primer: Bourjois flower perfection smoothing primer OR Bodyshop pearl radiance primer– I havent used both, cant suggest. But u can try MAC mattyfying/ oil control Primer if u are looking for oil control
      2. Foundation: MAC pro longwear OR Bodyshop extra virgin minerals foundation (will TBS foundation be too oily for my skin type?)– Yep, TBS would be too oily. I have combi skin and I liked it for Winters but for Summers, its a no no! U can try Clinique foundi also coz sometimes MAC tends to be too Yellowish on some people. Even Matchmaster would be a great investment as you are going to be engaged soon.
      3. Concealer: MAC studio finish(Could not see beyond this one)– I too think its the best
      4. Eyeshadow: I picked out 5 from the must have list here on IMBB- Rice paper, Carbon. Expensive pink, Twinks and Soft Brown– Great picks! EVen I am lusting for all these!
      5. Lippies: I don’t feel confident wearing a lot of colour on my lips so looking at MAC Fanfare or See sheer.– Have seen See Sheer but do not buy without applying on your lips. These are quite an investment and you dont want wasting money on wrong shades! or If you dont wear lipcolors much, you can go for Drugstore brands. It depends on ur preference dear.
      6. Others: I have the Elizabeth Arden Mascara, Maybelline Gel Liner and Hashmi Kajal which are one of the few things that work perfectly for my super sensitive, contact lens eyes. Also a Maybelline compact and TBS eyeshadow brush.

Rest all looks good! All the best πŸ™‚

      1. Thanks a lot ILa! πŸ™‚ I will definitely postpone the foundi n concealer shopping now.
Matchmaster does sound like the appropriate to the occasion πŸ˜‰ Will check out the Clinique one too..
Lippi shoping bhi postponed. Now I am considering something sasta!(compared to MAC)
        Thanks for your advice!

  1. . Foundation: MAC pro longwear – you’d never rgret buying it.
    3. Concealer: MAC select moisture cover or select cover up. you can also check out the chambor pen concealer if you are looking for something with less coverage.;
    4. Eyeshadow: dont buy carbon at all. check out nehru atleast. can also include amberlights
    5. Lippies: see sheer any day.
    6. Others: I have the Elizabeth Arden Mascara, Maybelline Gel Liner and Hashmi Kajal which are one of the few things that work perfectly for my super sensitive, contact lens eyes. Also a Maybelline compact and TBS eyeshadow brush.

sounds perfect. brushes you can pick up mac 217 and 219/ they are my everyday brushes – totally abused. πŸ˜› hope that helps. πŸ™‚

  2. actually if you are looking for a day to day tinted moisturizer thing, go for mac prolongwear concealer. that would work fabulous as both concealer and foundation. for foundation mix a bit of it in your moisturizer rand it works sooooo beautifully. i finished up my bottle using it as a daily tm kinda thing πŸ˜€ and works great as concealer too. πŸ™‚ just try everything at the store befor buying because everyone’s needs are different πŸ™‚

        1. Just read that review! Loved the effect as TM! Are NWs better for under eye area? Since u use NW for under eyes…

    1. Thanks for you reply Rati!!! πŸ™‚
I that case Pro longwear it is for Foundation/concealer!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
Eyeshadow: I am very apprehensive about all of them since I’m not sure about putting them on right. I have one with from lakme that I am experimenting with these days, but I just keep creating new disasters :'( But Carbon pakka se cancel! (I woudn’t know how to use it!)
I want See sheer!!!! But I guess i’ll know if i’m ok with using it regularly only after I try it on.

What do you think about the MAC oil control primer that Ila mentioned?

  3. and good luck for your engagement. best leave it on professional. you’d be quite stressed out as it as with relatives around you so it is best that this be handled by someone else. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks!! πŸ™‚ I will.. Not my cup of Tea anyways to manage something for such an important occasion – was getting too optimistic πŸ˜›

  4. Hey suvarna! List us grt.. And as rati suggested go for the prolongwear concealer.. For foundation its best to wear n see how it works for u.. So i feel its best to spend good amount of time and consideration while buying foundation and concelaers.. Lippies eyeshadows brushes etc u cud pik up in a jiffy since ur list is alredy sorted πŸ˜€

which airline are u flying bt the way.. T 3 is huge!

    1. Thanks Pia.. I will buy the Foundation n concealer araam se.. maybe I can try it out at the Airport. I’m flying Emirates and have 4.5 hrs of layover. So atleast 3 full hours of Duty free therapy πŸ˜€

      1. Awesum.. I luv duty free shopping.. Hehe.. Oh btw do buy the clinique chubby stick.. So awesum.. Its a lip balm with a hint of color.. They hv the chubby stuck ads all ovr the duty free.. Lol!!
For lippies.. If u like see sheer.. Do try mac syrup and hug me too.. Do u like frost finish?? Try creme de la sheen.. Its a gorgeous shade.. They were out of stock on this one.. So i dint get.. I swear by see sheer n syrup.. All thanks to rati πŸ˜€
do invest in good wipes.. Try tea tree wipes frm tbs.. Or aloe or anything else depending on ur skin type.. I dnt remember seeing tbs at the airport tho.. Loccitane ws def thr.. Where r u coming frm n where r u headed.. U cud try a tbs store accordingly i guess..

        1. Chubby sticks!! Sounds so cute! I’ll check these and the MAC ones too at the Airport. I’m coming from Denmark to India, So I can buy these when I am back in India too.. I bought the wipes last week only πŸ˜€

  5. Try Clinique – Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector as a primer. it works great 4 oily skin.
i hav been using frm last 4 months is works like wonderrrrrrrrrr……….

  6. Here’s few tips from my side..though m not any expert πŸ™‚ all below products I have used and totally recommend it for everyday makeup!
Primer – Inglot makeup base if absolutely fab but it does contain silicons so make sure you are not allergic to it, try out clarins beauty balm another fab product. Even Loreal magiq base is pretty good..honestly I dont suggest to use primers on daily basis..no harm just my personal preference πŸ™‚ as one wud want to keep daily makeup to minimal
Foundation – I love my bourjois healthy mix foundation and have not tried mac yet πŸ™‚ bourjois is great for daily wear and gives dewy finish..if you want matte finish just top it over with compact powder πŸ™‚ even body shop virgin mineral is good for oily skin..have seen reviews of people with oily skin and they have loved it..though I have never personally tried it as no shade match πŸ™
Concealer – I love love my colorbar stick concealer..its creamy and covers really well and perfect for daily use..I also own mac Select moisture cover and love it a lot too πŸ™‚ If you have extreme dark circles or hyper pigmentation get kryolan’s panstick in 303..its orangey in color and counteracts under eye darkness or hyper pigmented beautifully!
Eyeshadows – I dont own single mac eyeshadow but love inglot ones a lot and those are only ones I have used , you can see many review on inglot eye shadows on imbb, also few of my mac favorites would be humid, expensive pink (must have!), rice paper, satin taupe
Lippies – If you dont like colors go for browns n nudes like maybelline color sensational autumn rush, crazy for coffee or colorbar matte velvet in cream cup or bare..in mac i would really suggest you to check out cream in your cup, half n half, twig, mocha..these are superb for daily wear
Mascara – Get the new Loreal volume mascara..it just bought it and so loving it!!! I swear by maybelline gel liner πŸ™‚ for colored liner try Faces or Colorbar ones..even bourjois has some good ones..phew long post..hope it was helpful πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks a lot parita!!! πŸ™‚ I have been considering the Bourjois foundation too, but haven’t met/heard from anybody who was using it. Will definitely do a test with it.

I will check out the lippies you mentioned too.. Though I have a strong feeling I will end up skipping the Lip colour totally.. Still, no harm in trying πŸ™‚

Coloured eyeliners.. yayayyayaya !! I have to get one of those..

    2. I m thinking abt give a try to bourjois healthy mix foundation ……………
      Thanks 4 the suggestionnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  7. Hi Suvarna,You got all the gyaan about foundation…Id like to elaborate on lippies..
Since you said you dont want much of colour on your lips,no point buying the expensive Mac ones..buy nice lip balms.
Otherwise can check out revlon lip butters.
even better try a palette as that expands your choices..
I would also suggest ti try a nice daring bright colour like hot pink or red..now dont be scared..all you have to do is to use it like a stain…nad on your glam days wear them full on!!
    cheers!

    1. Hi Aditi! I am literally scared of lip colour. Even if I put on a soft nude shade I feel like ppl are going to be staring at my lips πŸ™ So I have a nice little lip balm collection going on.. Something in pink/soft coral would be a biggg step up for me.. I hope I can try one of the daring ones some day.. today is definitely not that day πŸ˜›

  8. and here are my recommendations.

Foundation – Clinique Super balanced – works well for oily/combination skin. MAC prolong wear is a wonderful option as well
Concealer – MAC prolong wear – nothing better than this πŸ™‚
Lippies – Maybelline My Mahogany, Faces Fig, MAC twig
    Mascara – Loreal Million lashes
    Primer – MAC prep+prime
Others – TBS Born lippy in plum, Maybelline watershine – Moccachino, Faces caffelatte brown, Bourjois blushes in Tomette

I would agree with the others that its best to not buy the concealer and foundation in a hurry.

    hope this helps.

    1. Thanks for the Super list Aru!!!
I think I am definitely sold on Pro long wear.. Now just to find the right shade.. Uff!!! Will definitely give it good time.

The Bourjois blush is a fab idea.. I love how their baked blushes look.. Must try!! πŸ™‚

  9. hiya,
I thought i d also add my share of opinions πŸ˜›

Primer:- i dnt really think that one needs a primer everyday, So you should see if you really need it

Foundation:- I like revlon colorstay for oily/combination skin. Works so good, provides the best coverage and less expensive as compared to high end ones. Also for everyday you could check out something like Lotus herbals daily matte foundation, that also helps control oil.

Eye shadows:- Mac all that glitters, Woodwinked ( prettiest colour ever ), folie

Lipcolors:- Mac see sheer ( looks soo godd), Mac cosmo, Lotus herbals floralglam in sensous mauve

        1. ya thats a fab compact..they were out of stock when i went few weeks ago. picked up the other compact which is not very good. might just go back and end up buying this one..:) thanks for te reminder actually πŸ™‚

            1. Thanks a ton for all your help Harman.. I saw the LOTD you did for ur birthday.. I love they way you look there πŸ™‚
I am rethinking the primer now. Maybe I don’t need it after all…
I will definitely test out See sheer and the other Mac eye shadows
With you and Aru both recommending The Mac compact, I MUST look at at… πŸ™‚

              1. Thank you so much πŸ™‚ yeah you should definitely check out the mineralize skin finish, even I use medium plus. I think almost all indian skintones would fall inbetween medium plus, medium or medium deep.
Hehehe its ok to overshoot the budget, its your engagement after all πŸ˜›

                1. Thats what I told myself when I added all the fancy MAC stuff to my list, without even knowing how to use them.. πŸ˜‰ But will try the mineralize skin finish..

                  1. you know you could buy mac refills, they ll cost you lesser than the other ones. Theres a post by Parita di to make your own Magnetic palette. Do check it out. It will be more economical πŸ™‚

          1. @Aru and Harman… Some help on choosing the shades in MAC mineralize skin finish please.. Mujhe toh kuch samajh hi nahi aaya.. Such pretty looking options+Confusion!!

  10. hello everyone,

i also need some opinion on coastal scents 88 pallete…. unfortunately the fb doesnt allow fans to post questions πŸ™‚

if anyone of u has used the pallete can you let me know between the original and ultra shimmer which one would u recommend and why……the only eye makeup i ever do is for the evening….for day / work i dont wear any makeup as such…i mean eye shadow.

    thanks all

  11. hello suvarna,
first congrats on your engagement. you have described your skin to be very oily and acne prone. In that case i’ll suggest like others that you get a sample and try the foundation for a few days. Also with oily skin why dont you opt for powder foundation. it will help in controlling oil. i personally use mac studio fix powder in summers.
mac studio finish is great concealer.
As for eyeshadows you can use whatever shades you like. most people prefer mac however i like the shimmer cubes eyeshadow of bodyshop.
for primer you can try Clinique Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector considering you have oily skin. i did get it as a sample and so i have tried it. however i dont use primers.
If you like sheer lipcolor you can also try clinique lipsticks, lipglosses. they have nice sheer colors. but they wont stay whole day.
Can i add 2 things to your list if it doesnot stretch your budget? 1)I have not seen eyeliners in your list. you can add eyeliners. i see you use kajal. well then you can try mac kohl eyeliners. it can be used on your eyelids and in your waterline too. Infact for my daily use i skip eyeshows and apply thick coloured eyeliner. you get various shades in eyeliners too like teal, purple, green and many more. 2)blotting sheets works great in absorbing oil from your face and it wont remove your makeup.
Also if you pick liquid foundation you may want to add finishing powder. that will help reducing oil. but finishing powder is definately optional.
    happy shopping!

    1. for foundation if you like liquid, i have heard that clinique anti blemish liquid makeup is good too for acne prone skin. i know a friend who uses it and she likes it. the products i have suggested i do use/have used all of them.

      1. Thanks Junkie πŸ™‚
Thanks for recommending the Clinique foundation and Primer.. I did not know about it at all.. but the more I read the more I like it.. Will sure check it out. Is it easily available in India?
I am a little (actually, very much) apprehensive about trying new liners/kajal/mascara since my eyes react badly to almost everything. Maybe when I feel a little more daring πŸ˜‰ I have my eye on the Maybelline gel liner in Plum since their black one workes great for me and I have a Teal-ish shade from lakme that I can use occasionally..

Blotting sheets- Will add to my list!!! πŸ™‚

        1. clinique foundation should be available in india. their anti blemish and eventone are two popular foundations. i am not sure of the the pore minimizer.

  12. Hey Suvarna,
I don’t use primer.. I have heard loreal magique base and bodyography primer clear are quite good. I am also thinking to get one of these.
Foundation- mac prolongwear, bourjois foundation and revlon colorstay foundation are good.
Concealer- i use colorbar full cover concealer.
Eyeshadows- mac and inglot eyeshadows are the best. inglot eyeshadows are pocket friendly πŸ™‚
Eyeliner- I personally feel mac kohl, colorbar and faces eyepencils are the best and in black, i use maybelline gel eyeliner
Compact- i use maybelline uv stay compact. i am also a fan of bourjois loose powder.
blushes- i love mac and bourjois baked blushes
I can not suggest lipsticks because i apply only lip glosses or lip creams.
Hope i gave you some help. πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Surbhi!!!
Thank you ever so much for your help πŸ™‚
I am on the fence about the primer now since most of you have said i don’t need it for eveyday..
MAC prolong wear is definitely something I will try out.
I have been lusting over the MAC eyeshadows!! Might have to switch to Inglot if my list of “Must-Haves” keeps growing at this rate.. πŸ˜›
Yayayyayay for the Maybelline gel liner.. i love that thing in Black. Want the one in Plum soon.
I use the Maybelline UV stay compact too, Almost hitting the pan. Will try something else for the sake of variety!
I am actually trying to step-up up to a sheer lip colour from my usual Lip balm.
You gave me lots of help!! Thanks!! I can totally identify with ur collection πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      1. Ur welcome suvarna πŸ™‚ i am glad i could contribute πŸ™‚ even m eyeing plum color in maybelline gel eyeliner but i think its not available in India. πŸ™ if you wanna try any other compact, lotus herbals compact was reviewed here on imbb 2-3days back.
do check that out. i have heard colorbar compact is also worth trying πŸ™‚

  13. Congratulations for your enagement…i just wanted to mention something about the NC/NW confusion you had…us indians generally have a yellow undertone to our skin rather than pink which makes us NC (cool) ….MAC is the only company who identifies yellow undertones as cool…any other brand would consider that warm….but MAC considers pinks to be warm and yellows cool…i bought a foundation which was NW a while back and i still have it bcuz it just didnt look right…however i now know i am NC and i have found my perfect foundation! (i too have oily skin) took me a couple of years but not going back now…all the best with ur shopping! xoxo

  14. Hi Suvarna,

I have very little experience with buying colour cosmetics and have no idea what NC/NW(not sure what that means) shade I am.

Ans: All the NW range has more of YELLOW undertone to it.
And All NC is more of PINK undertone

And also while you are at MAC, try out the new Mineralized Concealer, it really works well for under eye concealing

    In the BLUSH range:
    You can try –
Buff for a natural/neutral barely there look
Coppertone – best for contouring your face
desert rose – to give you those fresh pink tint look

For the eyes, you can consider looking at:

    graphblack and stubborn brown

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers!
and good luck with your shpping

    1. Thanks Rajol! I have never bought much foundation before but the one I had was the wrong shade for sure.. Now I have a TBS foundation thats the right shade but too oily for me. Itss take good time n effort in getting the right MAC shade now.
I do need under eye concealing.. Will check it
And thanks for adding the blushes.. I hadn’t thought of them at all… Thanks!! πŸ™‚
