How to Choose Eyeshadow Color
Eyes are considered to be jewels of our body. It feels really good to polish them with an eyeshadow but do you sometimes wonder why a certain eyeshadow is not looking good on you? Maybe because the color that you have chosen is just not right. People make this mistake often by using the same color eyeshadow as their clothes. You can choose a color to compliment that with the color of your clothes but never match it entirely. Remember that the colors which suit others might not necessarily suit you. Eyeshadow colors should be chosen on these 3 criteria:
1. Eye Color
2. Skin Tone
3. Hair Color
Eye Color
Contrary to the belief, you should never match your eyeshadow with the color of your eyes. For example, blue eyeshadow on blue eyes will just make it look dull. This does not mean blue-eyed color people should not use blue eyeshadow. They can use it as long as they blend in other complimentary colors to make it more vibrant or neutral. Also make sure not to put the exact same eyeshadow shade as your eyes on the area of the lid right above your iris. Try to apply that color either on your crease or outer corner. The general rules for choosing eyeshadow for different eye colors are-
Brown & Hazel eyes- Brown eyed people are pretty lucky in this regard as they can experiment with the most number of colors. From amber, slate grey, charcoal, copper to lavender, violet all suit brown eyes. Even eyeshadow shades like khaki, olive, dark brown and yellow shades like gold work well with brown eyes.
Blue eyes– Pink, orange, peach, purple, coral, wine, gray, black undertones tend to emphasize blue eyes more. Also silver eyeshadow works really well with blue eyes unlike with brown eyes. Avoid any eyeshadow with blue-green undertones.
Green eyes- Eyeshadow with red undertones like burgundy, maroon and colors like apricot, peach, plum, gray pops out and compliments the green of the eyes more than any other colors.
This wheel will give you a fair idea of what color you should opt for. Basically find out your eye color in this wheel and just see the color placed on the exact opposite of that color. For example right opposite green is placed different shades of plum and magenta which is what suits green eyes more as mentioned.
Skin Tone
Skin tones are usually categorized into warm skin tone & cool skin tone. Most Asians fall into the warmer skin tone category. Warmer skin tones have yellow or golden undertones whereas cool skin tones have blue or pink undertones.
If you have warm skin, try colors like bronze, ivory, taupe, light brown, pink, soft green, and coral. If you have cool skin tones you should experiment more with silver, pale blue, lilac, teal, dark green, turquoise, and gray .
Hair Color
Black/Brown– Again brunettes have an advantage as most of the eyeshadow colors suit them. From dark colors like black, browns, purples to neutrals like gold, beige to lighter shades of green, yellow all work well with brunettes.
Blonde– Blondes usually have a fair skin tone so only few shades of pinks, grays, black, gold, blue, and greens suit them
Red – Few shades of pink, black, gold, green (especially olive) suit redheads better than others due to the intensity of their hair color.
Don’t limit your creativity to only the colors listed. These are no strict rules to follow but if you are an eye makeup beginner these guidelines will help you choose and decide which colors will suit you more than others.

thank you :-* I know its pretty advantageous to know the color wheel. There’s so much of it you can apply not only in makeup but in so many other things :-))
Thanks Insiya…i have black eyes….and as per the wheel its mainly greys…any suggestion?:-)
Priya you should mainly go for colors that have a blue tinge but not a complete shade of blue. Go for purple blues like iris, majorelle blue, periwinkle, indigo or you can also go for green blues like teal, tiffany blue, midnight green, persian green. Avoid navy blue or any dark shades of blue. You can use black nevertheless in your crease and outer v for that smoky eye look :-))
Nice tips Insiya…Me too have black eyes..I love purple…can I use them?
yes sure refer to the different colors i desribed to Priya. those will suit you as well :-))
