Fun Fiction Reads For Shopaholics and Fashionistas

Hello all the gorgeous soul sisters!!

You know what? I read like I breathe, sleep, eat and drink, literally. Often people ask me that how do I manage to fit in reading in my schedule, with my studies, training and IMBB writing, and I just tell them that I enjoy it, so I needn’t find any time for it, much like I do not need to find time for writing for IMBB. I love it, so it comes naturally to me as a refreshing break, which eases my mind of “beneath the road roller” kind of life that I have. 😛 Honestly, I feel, that if you love to do something, you really do not need to “find” time as such for that, it will make a space for itself automatically, in your life and heart.

Fun Fiction Reads For Shopaholics and Fashionistas

So, yesterday, when I finished my current read “Rebecca” (you should read that, all you readers out there. It is an amazing mix of romance, goth, mystery and horror 😀 ), a “light bulb” flicked into my mind, that hey, I have read some really fun novels, that are totally into fashion and shopping, and, when I think of fashion and shopping, the first thing that comes into my mind, is, IMBB of course, and by extension, our beloved forum of Madam Gupshup. So, I thought of penning down a fun post for you all, about these books. After all, we are the “beauty with brains” generation. Let’s go tell the world that.

  • “Devil Wears Prada” series by Lauren Weisberger:

When it comes to fashion and it’s industry, the first fiction title that comes to my mind, is this. That can also be because of the fact that courtesy Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, the characters of Miranda Priestly and Andrea “Andy” Sachs, were brought to life.  For those who do not know about the franchise, it is about a woman who is hired as a personal assistant to a powerful fashion magazine editor, a job that becomes hellish as she struggles to keep up with her boss’s grueling schedule and demeaning requests.  Take this for example : Miranda (the boss), asks the assistant (Andy) to get the drafts of the then unreleased Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, for her girls.

A sequel of the novel, named “Revenge wears Prada”, was released in June 2013. The story is set almost a decade after the events of the first novel. Andy owns the hot new bridal magazine known as “The Plunge” with her former nemesis turned best friend, Emily. She is the editor and Emily the PR. At the same time, she is planning her own wedding, to Max, who comes from one of the most influential families in Manhattan, but remains haunted by her experience with Miranda, whom she eventually encounters again.

  • “The Shopaholic Series” by Sophie Kinsella:

The Shopaholic series follows the adventures of Rebecca “Becky” Bloomwood. Honestly, I am telling you that all you females are going to identify yourself with Becky. She justifies her trips to the malls in such an innocent manner, that I was literally in splits. The best part is, that the books are narrated by the main character, and we see everything from the eyes of a shopaholic 😛 . You just cannot get irritated with Becky, in spite of her antiques. Also, you get introduced to all the brands of bags, clothes, shoes, and yes, even the branded maternity shopping!! Reading the series is just experiencing it all through the eyes of Rebecca.  Six novels have been released in the series so far. We meet Becky and her world in “Confessions of a Shopaholic/The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic” experience her love life in “Shopaholic Takes Manhattan/Shopaholic Abroad,” do her marriage shopping in “Shopaholic Ties the Knot”, empathize when she wants to have a sister with whom she can share her shopping sprees in “Shopaholic and Sister,” do the maternity shopping in “Shopaholic and Baby” and raise her two year old equally enthusiastic baby gal in “Mini Shopaholic”. These books are treat. The latest one to come out in the series, is, “Shopaholic to The Stars”, in 2014.

A movie starring Isla Fisher and Hugh Dancy, based on the series, was released in 2009. Though it wasn’t a big success, commercially or critically, it is still a fun one to watch.

  • “Twenties Girl” by Sophie Kinsella:

If you have not read the works of Sophie Kinsella, I suggest you do so. She has a brilliant way of writing and making you laugh with her characters. She makes you literally drool over the brands, and makes the world of her books come alive in your imagination. The chic lit genre will never be the same, trust me.

Here is a quick peek preview of Twenties Girl,

“Lara is a twenty-seven-year-old girl who has always had an overactive imagination. At the funeral of her great-aunt Sadie, she gets visited by her ghost, in form of a bold, demanding, Charleston-dancing girl. Sadie has one particular request: she can’t rest without her precious dragonfly necklace, and demands that Lara find it for her. But Lara is besieged with problems of her own, such as her uncertain future as co-founder of her own headhunting agency, and the fact that she was recently dumped by Josh, the love of her life.  Lara, coerced by Sadie, embarks upon an arduous journey to find said necklace, but in the process of doing so, ends up accomplishing so much more. She unravels the ugly truth behind her uncle’s enormous success, inadvertently unearths a long-lost love story enshrouded by the cobwebs of time, and even manages to get entangled in a love story of her own.”

Now, you can understand from the aforesaid, that it introduces us to the fashion of the 1920s, and that too in the modern era. It is quite a quirky thing as the 20 something “great-aunt” Sadie has her own version of fashion, and even though she belongs to a different era all together, she is no different from the fashionistas of today.

  • “Airhead Series” by Meg Cabot:

This is more of a young adult genre, as it follows the life and style of a teen star, but you will enjoy it for all the fun tones and the dark themes. I will not giveaway much, as it has the elements of mystery incorporated too, but this one is a must read as it gives an insight on what goes behind the glittering and shining doors of Hollywood. It answers questions on the flawless skin of our idols, how they look so perfect, and also tells us the reality, albeit all of this in a very light manner.

The series is a trilogy, the order being:

Airhead (2008)
Being Nikki (2009)
Runaway (2010)

  • Emma by Jane Austen:

Okay, a confession here. I love reading Jane Austen, but I do not like her heroines. They are street smart and speak their mind, but why in the name of God are they so hard headed? They don’t recognize the truth sometimes, even if it stares them hard in the face.  One such heroine of her is, Emma. Jane Austen herself admitted that Emma was her least likeable heroine. No matter how full of flaws, and blind her match making might be, but this is sure one trendy novel for every fashion lover.  And of course, who can forget the portrayal of Emma as Aisha, by Sonam Kapoor. Personally, I love that movie.

  • Shopgirl by Steve Martin:

This one is written by a man of many talents, Steve Martin. He even acted in the film adaptation of the same. It is is about a complex love triangle between a bored salesgirl, a wealthy businessman, and an aimless young man.

Check a quick peek preview:

“Its titular character is young, lonely, depressed, Vermont transplant Mirabelle Buttersfield, who sells expensive evening gloves nobody ever buys at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and spends her evenings watching television with her two cats. She attempts to forge a relationship with middle-aged, womanizing, Seattle millionaire Ray Porter while being pursued by socially inept and unambitious slacker Jeremy. Also playing roles in her life are her father, a dysfunctional Vietnam War veteran, and Lisa, her promiscuous, image-obsessed co-worker and voracious rival.”

  • First Sight by Danielle Steel:

Danielle Steel is more popularly known for the tragic tones in her mix genres of romance, family drama and suspense. This one is set in the fashion world, but is a complete opposite of the fun tones of Prada and Shopaholic series. It is darker. In this novel, Paris, L.A., and the world of ready to wear fashion provide rich backdrops for Danielle Steel’s deeply involving story of a gifted designer whose talent and drive have brought her everything—except the ability to erase her past and trust relationships. Do check it out if you are a fan of the author’s works.

  • Sex and The City by Candace Bushnell:

Ooooo!! Did you all know that our beloved series and movies were had a novel version too? Enter a world where the sometimes shocking and often hilarious mating habits of the privileged are exposed by a true insider. In essays drawn from her witty and sometimes brutally candid column in the New York Observer, Candace Bushnell introduces us to the young and beautiful who travel in packs from parties to bars to clubs. Meet “Carrie,” the quintessential young writer looking for love in all the wrong places…”Mr. Big,” the business tycoon who drifts from one relationship to another…”Samantha Jones,” the fortyish, successful, “testosterone woman” who uses sex like a man…not to mention “Psycho Moms,” “Bicycle Boys,” “International Crazy Girls,” and the rest of the New Yorkers who have inspired one of the most watched TV series of our time. You’ve seen them on HBO, now read the book that started it all…

  • Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown:

Remember the epic movie starring Rees Witherspoon? Well, it was the adaptation of the novel of the same name. If you loved the movie and it’s fashionable undertones, go get this one.

So everyone, this was my list for all those who have a rich imagination and love to read. These are the fun fashion reads that I would recommend, especially the Prada and Shopaholic series, where the former will make you sympathize with poor Andy, and the latter will have you splits when you live the shopaholic life of Becky. 😛

  1. Shopgirl by Steve Martin is a decent read, rest all (the ones I’ve read) are pure trash. Other than these, I really like Keatyn Chronicles which is sort off a rip off of Gossip Girl series, only 1000 times better. Oh and you forgot to mention the Gossip Girl series too. 😛 😀

    1. Oh!! I have loved almost all works of Sophie Kinsella 🙂 Like the tone of her novels and the narration 😀 Even the airhead series and devil wears prada are good.. 🙂 Haven’t seen Gossip Girl 🙂 I am more of a “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” and “How I Met Your Mother” fan 🙂

        1. O oki I will definitely c where can I get my hands on those 😀 thanks for recommending…after the serious genres I really want such light chic lits 😀

  2. Brilliant idea! What an article, absolutely enjoyed reading it, now I know what books to pick up 🙂 most of these I have only seen on screen, need to read them ASAP.. Super!
