Your friendly neighborhood natural product junkie is here with another review! With this review, I feel like I’ve gone a full circle. You see, the natural product bug first bit me when I read about the many dangers of sulphate-laden shampoos. At the time, most large-scale beauty companies didn’t have sulphate-free lines and some quick internet searches for a good SLS-free shampoo led me to the Giovanni Eco Chic brand. Let me start this review by saying: Hallelujah! Finally, a popular natural brand that is, yes indeed, available in India! Today, I’m going to talk about their Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture shampoo. Did it leave me with hair that was smooth as silk? Well, read on to find out!
Product Background and Description:
Giovanni Eco Chic Cosmetics, a family-owned company based in Los Angeles, was founded in the 1970′s by Arthur Guidotti, a leading Beverly Hills stylist and hair salon owner. Guidotti wanted to create hair products that were inspired by nature and still compelling, high performance formulas; which is what the company is dedicated to even today. Giovanni offers a range of hair and skin products that use as many natural ingredients as possible. Another factor that sets Giovanni products apart from competitors is their packaging, which is designed to be eco-friendly and chic. All their products are formulated without parabens, phthalates, SLS, SLES and no animal products besides naturally derived beeswax.
According to the company Giovanni’s Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture shampoo “has a pearlized formula that glistens in your hand and transforms your hair into a silky palette that’s ready for anything.” It “calms unruly hair and alleviates frizz,” “soothes dry, chemically processed hair,” and “increases shine.”
$ 8.50 for 8.5 fl oz. About Rs. 450-500 (depending on retailer) for 250 ml.
My Experience with Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo:
A lot of people suggest changing shampoos often, which is something I’ve never really tried. What I do, instead, is use three different shampoos at different times of the week. These are Nizoral shampoo, Giovanni’s Triple Tea Treat Shampoo and Giovanni’s Smooth as Silk Shampoo. I have an oily scalp, prone to buildup and very dry ends. While the first two shampoos help keep oil and dandruff at bay, I use this one too stop my hair from turning into straw.
All Giovanni shampoos come in slim, translucent, plastic bottles. Their design is really innovative and lives up to the company’s goal of making “chic” products. I quite like the graphics on the packaging since it’s very clean and modern. Keeping in line with their desire to be eco-friendly, part of the bottle is made up of post-consumer recycled plastic. This shampoo has a pearlized look to it, something that I’ve never really seen before in any other shampoo (see swatch for what I mean by “pearlized”). It has a pleasant citrusy smell, which comes as no surprise, given that orange and grapefruit are two of its ingredients. The shampoo produces a very thick and rich lather when massaged into wet hair. This is something that I haven’t experienced with a lot of SLS-free shampoos. Most of them don’t lather and you have to use a lot of product to “feel” like your scalp is getting cleaned.
I usually lightly lather the shampoo in my palms and then massage it into my scalp. I let the ends of my hair get rinsed when I rinse the shampoo out of my hair and don’t really coat them with any shampoo. It doesn’t take a lot of this shampoo to get a good lather on. Less is definitely more with this product. The lather rinses out easily, and I either follow the shampoo up with some conditioner or a few drops of oil.
When used on its own, this shampoo doesn’t provide any additional moisture to the hair. At the same time, unlike other shampoos this doesn’t strip the hair off oils. This shampoo works best when used with a conditioner. I’ve used it both with a silicone-based conditioner and a silicone-free conditioner from the same line and at both times this really does leave my hair feeling soft and silky. It works best with the conditioner from its own line because then my hair doesn’t get flat the next day. When used with a silicone-based conditioner, my hair and scalp do get oily the very next day after washing; an after-effect I attribute to the conditioner and not this shampoo. Overall, this is a great shampoo and a must for those trying to incorporate natural products into their grooming/beauty routine.
Pros of Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo:
- Doesn’t strip hair off moisture.
- Formulated without parabens, phthalates, SLS, SLES.
- Smells very pleasant.
- Produces rich lather which rinses off easily.
- Does not test on animals.
Cons of Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deep Moisture Shampoo:
- Slightly pricey.
- When used without a conditioner doesn’t quite make hair silky.
This is a great natural shampoo. It won’t leave you with silky hair on its own, but it does a great job of not drying the hair out while providing a gentle cleanse to the scalp. I think it is slightly overpriced, but you really don’t need a lot of product for a good lather!
