Pallavi Asks:

I am a regular reader of your blog and i trust it to provide me with genuine reviews whenever I want to try out something new.I am planning to colour my hair next month and i am really excited about it ( it has never been coloured before, not even henna-d).Anyway I have very black hair and my complexion is fair with golden undertones.i visited the l’oreal site and took a simple quiz which revealed that i should get the colour “black cherry”.I checked it out and it’s a really pretty colour, i watched many tutes on YT and the colour came out as a subtle red on black-dark hair which shines in the light which is great given that summer is here but, I have a fear that i will end up damaging my hair-I do not suffer from dandruff but my hair is fine textured, though quite thick…so coming to my question, i wanna know what products i can use at home to protect my hair and the colour..is the l’oreal elvive colour protecting range any good?? please let me know as i really wanna go ahead with the colouring but do not wanna damage it in anyway.

P.S my hair is dry at the ends and oily on the scalp though i have never faced any problem with that since i take good care of it.

  1. I just tried l’oreal casting creme gloss in shade plum, which is very similar to the shade you have mentioned. my hair is black, normal straight black hair …and the color doesn’t show without advanced treatments and stuff! :nababana:

  2. you can see a sliiiiggghhtt hint of color in very very briiggghhttt sunlight, that to0 only if you stare at it long enough..and if you ask someone if they find anything different about your hair, they wouldn’t notice 😐
until you make them stare at it, in the sun, concentrating intensely :methinks:

But oh yes, texture wise i must say it did leave my hair glossier, silkier and in general very healthy looking..but it just didn’t solve the purpose nah?! :smug:

    1. but thats what i want..it shouldn’t be like ppl goin omg you colored your hair..i want it subtle, like only noticeable in light…what products do you use on your colored hair?? and also red color does stay on the hair less than others.

  3. In my experience, the hair will get a bit damaged if you go to a box colour and a lot damaged if you are trying to lighten the colour more than two shades from your natural colour (at a hairdresser). The ingredients are breaking down your hair follicles, and stripping your natural colour so it can take the new colour. Best products to use after colouring are the colour-protect shampoos from the brand of colouring your use. They will be formulated to give longer lasting colour rather than stripping out the colour. Also, having used box colour myself, I can tell you it is not very concentrated, so the colour on the box is not really what your hair will look like – black hair needs plenty of chemicals to strip the original colour out. Having said that, try a mild colour change and enjoy it, you will know what works for your hair when you try it! 😉

  4. Me too thinking since long whether to go for it or no :methinks: :methinks: ….but breaking hair follicles….sound scary :yikes:

  5. If u have jet black hairs..better stick to reddish or burgandy colors tht shine in sunlight.-loreal defintly bettr than garnier.
Going blonde will definately make ur hairs more brittle as u alredy have dry hairs.
Light brown hairs can go for blonde shades,it is less damaging then-like i have -honey and strawberry blonde color highlights n dark brown lowlights. From schwarkopff….
Also as u are fair, u can go for lighter shades as well.
Olive skin with blonde shade hair is completely NO NO..
Avoid silicone based products like dove range it coats the hair n make color appear dull.
I use loreal color protect range the normal one n it is giving enough protection.it have UV filters tht stop split ends.colored hairs are more prone to split ends -remember-always use UV filter wala shampoo and conditioner..
Avoid herbal stuff like amla ritha they strip the color n might bring back black hair making ur hairs dual tone.
P.s- 6 years of experiance in getting hair colored…n still loving it.. :yahoo: :yahoo: Gud luck…

  6. Hi. I use L’Oreal Excellence hair color at home to cover my greys. For black hair, you can go reddish or brownish. Both look good. For protecting hair color, best products are from L’Oreal Professional range- available in most salons. For something less expensive, there is L’Oreal Hair Expertise Color Protect range. My hair have not suffered any damage yet and I have been colouring my hair for years now.

  7. i have the same hair type as your’s. though i haven’t used any hair color per say , my hair is dark chocolate now because of henna treatment with lush henna caca brun (i have reviewed it here earlier). Owing to such hair type and texture i would suggest you to go for TBS rainforest radiance hair butter (which is for colored hair) as a deep conditioning hair mask(am using it and i love it) . they have the rainforest radiance shampoo n conditioner too for colored hair, you can try them. i guess the shampoo is gel based,so that may work well with your oily scalp.
i haven’t tried loreal shampoos,so can’t comment on them..but most salons reco them
    hope this helped!

  8. since it is your first time coloring, i would sincerely advice you to go into a parlour and get it done. Pls dont do it at home. messy and you never quite can get the color right (but definitely cheaper option). and for your hair i would go with loreal..a number 4 (brown) +6.2 (red) but your hair wont turn red if thats what you are worried about. it will have a light brown with a subtle hint if red.

taking care of colored hair is very imporant. always condition your hair after every shampoo and try and use shampoos for colored hair whenever possible.

  9. please dont try garnier color my mom uses it as it looks like u have use black ink they look very bad dried and too unnatural….loreal i s still better now she has switched to loreal….

  10. Hi Pallavi, i have dark straight hair(same to same i.e. oily scalp with dry ends) with a fair to medium complexion. I am a veteran in hair coloring and would say that as it is ur first time better go to a salon and get ur hair coloured. In my exp loreal salons are the best and they would even help u pick a good color for ur hair; u can try out the reds, burgundies even copper looks good and try to use the ammonia free inoa colors; they might be a little expensive but better safe than be sorry whenever hair/skin is concerned.the colors reflect nicely and even stay on for a long time if proper at-home care is taken. Invest in a color protect shampoo and hair mask and u will not face the problem of hair breakage or drying. hope you would have a good hair coloring experience 🙂
