Deos and antiperspirants have been a hot topic for years. Often we hear how deos clog pores and antiperspirants have been linked to breast cancer. With increasing number of teenagers jumping into the “smell-good-get-a-girlfriend” bandwagon, it is essential to check whether we are abusing deo usage and also create awareness about the long term harms of using deodorants. Aluminum

Aluminum-based compounds are the main ingredients in antiperspirants. What these comppounds essentially do is block the sweat glands so the sweat would not show up. According to research, these compounds are absorbed by the skin and can bring about changes in estrogen receptors of breast cells.This estrogen can promote the growth of both cancerous and non-cancerous cells, hence making you more prone to breast cancer if you use aluminium antiperspirants.

Breathing difficulties and skin allergies:

Experts suggest that if you use too of deo spray, inhaling the chemicals from the deos can cause breathing troubles, skin problems like eczema and asthma and in some rare cases, even fatal heart troubles. The fine mist from the deo is easily inhaled causing nausea and headaches,Spraying the deo in a closed bathroom or any room sans ventilation, can be worse.

Parabens

Parabens in varied forms methylparaben, propylparaben, ethylparaben and so on, are basically artificial preservatives widely used in cosmetics and personal care products.Experts now consider them a reason for causing cancer. Parabens(have estrogen-like properties) like the estrogen, in the body can promote the growth of breast cancer cells.Women are more prone to developing cancer cells in the breast due to usage of such paraben-consisting deos on the underarms.

Propylene Glycol

Heard of humectants which keep substances from drying out? These are part of your deodorants and antiperspirants. Humectants are known to cause contact dermatitis, kidney damage, and liver damage. This nuerotoxin can also cause eye and skin irritation, gastrointestinal irritation and discomfort, nausea, headache, vomiting.

Talc

Talc is a mineral used in personal care products as an absorbent and it has been classified a carcinogen by cancer research agencies. Talc contains some amount of asbestiform fibers, hence if you see talc listed on the ingredients list, you simply would not know if the talc contains asbestiform fibers–making your talc usage –  carcinogenic.

Aerosol burns and frostbite

If aerosol deodorant(our regular cans of deos) is held close to the skin for long enough, it can cause an aerosol burn which is a kind of frostbite.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an antimicrobial chemical used to kill bacteria on the skin.This has been known to cause skin irritation and it has also been known to disrupt thyroid function and some other hormone systems.
