How to make your lipstick last longer?

Antonia asked:

Do you have any hints & tips to make lipstick longer lasting?
(Lipstick & lipgloss never last long on my lips – maybe my lips are in bad condition? I want to invest in MAC lip conditioner)

Step 1: Apply lip balm on your lips and let it soak few for a minute or two.

Step 2: Lay the tissue on your lips and lightly move your fingers on your tissue covered lips. This will take off any excess lips balm from your lips.

Step 3: Take a similar shade of lip liner as your lipstick. Line and fill in your lips with a lip liner.  A lip liner would give a base to your lipstick. So if your lipstick rubs off, your lip liner would keep  the colour on your lips.

Step 4: Now apply your lipstick.

Step 5: Lay a tissue on your lips , and lightly move your fingers in tissue. Remove the tissue. This will blot your lipstick. Then apply your lipstick again, and blot again.

Step 6: Follow up with a gloss.

This technique works for me most of the time. You are basically layering and blotting colour on your lips. So if one layer goes off, another stays.

Step 1. Apply lip balm when you are preparing the base your your face such as moisturizing. This gives an ample time for the lip balm to soak in your lips.  If the lip balm hasn’t soaked in fully, just lay a tissue on your lips, move your fingers on tissue and blot any excess.

Step 2  : Take a similar shade of liner as your lipstick. Line and fill in your lips with a lip liner.

Step 3: Fill in your lipstick.

Step 4: Lay a clean tissue on your lips. Take loose or pressed powder on your powder brush and swipe it all over the tissue. Remove the tissue. This will blot your lipstick in without making your lips powdery or taking away the colour of your lipstick.

Step 5: Apply another coat of lipstick and follow up with a lip gloss.

A few more tips:

  • Making your makeup last all day long is all about layering. You have to layer right products over one another. Cosmetic companies are also coming up with lip primers but since I have not found one in India, as yet. I use the layering techniques and they work fine for me.
  • If you are attending functions, avoid eating oily foods as much as possible. Oils melt your lipsticks and hence, loosen their staying power. Always carry your lipstick with you so that you can do touch ups as and when required. icon smile How to make your lipstick last longer?
  • Don’t lick your lips too much and if you have a long function to attend, try to talk less. I know how difficult it is. icon biggrin How to make your lipstick last longer?
  • I don’t use similar shade lip liner all the time. I do away with neutral shade liners mostly. icon razz How to make your lipstick last longer?
  • If you think your lips are in bad condition, apply generous amount of lip balm all over your lips and scrub your lips gently with a baby toothbrush for a minute or two. Wash your lips with a warm water and follow up by applying a lip balm. This would keep your lips soft and kissable. icon smile How to make your lipstick last longer?
  • Some people also apply the similar shade eyeshadow or blush on their lips after applying the lipstick and before applying the gloss. But I am not comfortable doing it so I don’t. The idea again is layering.

Regarding Mac Lip conditioner, I have seen people swear by it be it in terms of moisturization, SPF, tint or flavour. I have not used it myself. May be you could give it a try and give us a first hand review on it. icon smile How to make your lipstick last longer?

lining and filling your lips with a lip liner is a sure shot way to make sure that your lipstick stays on longer. i havent tried it out myself (mainly because i enjoy reapplying stuff on my lips – it gives me a high!), but my mother swears by it. especially since she uses dark shades on her lips. nothing looks worse than dark lips falling apart!

Sarah, lol!! I have terms and conditions now. :P

Rima: Yes it works. I end up not applying lip liner out of my laziness a lot of times and then my touch ups are never ending. And yes, by now I know how much you love lipsticks. :)

Amazing post Rati. Thank you so much for addressing this issue. I’m printintg this post & putting it in my makeup folder so I can refer to it in the future ^_^

I love makeup (though I don’t feel very confident in this area sometimes) & am slowly learning hints & tips. Your blog is a fantastic source which I am incredibly grateful for as it helps me become more knowledgable about the ins & outs of makeup.

Keep up the great work of sharing your makeup experiences =]

Aww! that’s so sweet Antonia. :)

I think makeup should be taken as fun and a challenge both. Fun because if you get too serious about it, you might probably stop enjoying it. And challenge because a right makeup can do wonders and wrong one can make you fall flat.

I am glad my blog is helping you. :)

Thanks a lot. *hugs*

Great Tips Rati,

Though I use none of these :P ..

I use a lip tint in a shade similar to the lipstick below the lipstick coat. I first tint my lips and then apply the lipstick.

This gives a more even toned color and if the lipstick wears off.. well, the tint is still there – so no touch-ups, refraining from food or conversation for me :D

Reply

Rati January 29, 2010 at 5:05 pm

oh yes!! I somehow not end up buying tints. No reason from refraining from those just that it never comes to my mind that i have to buy a lip tint. :P Will give it a try now. :)

I generally use a matt lipstick

blot

reapply matt lipstick

top it off with a hint of gloss for shine- not too much or else the colour runs

I stay away from lip tints cause it gets into the lip cracks and leave it looking aweful!

Vinita,

Thanks for the tips. I know matte shades have an excellent staying power but I just don’t buy them. I get get so distracted by all these sheer glossy finishes that mattes don’t get my attention. :P

Welcome aboard and do stay around. :)
