How To Revive Damaged Hair: Ask IMBB

Ask IMBB Gang

Saumya asks:

After like a decade of frying my hair through those deep-frying-flat-plate-conventionally called “straighteners,” am devastated. My hair has broken up into bits, it’s all dry, rough, damaged, frizzy etc – to name a few. Please help me out, what should I do? It’s like it’s so unmanageable that I end up doing more straightening and the getting more damaged cycle continues. Have tried mask, spa, conditioners, apple-banana-etc every mask but alas!
Please show me a way out.

  1. Oh those poor hair ..
Please stop burning them and give them some life. !
Am no expert but give nourishment to your hair. Use mild shampoo and serum for shine. Start your day for hair with aloe juice & badam. ImBb has so many helpful articles for healthy hair . Have patience have faith. ☺

  2. hey you know oil your hair with olive oil.. they really help smoothen out the frizz.. i am using these straightening friends since past 7 years and i know how it feels 🙁 restrict straightening them a bit.. do it only twice as week as of now.. you will surely see a difference if you restrict yourself for a while.. one product that works great for my broken hair is schwarzkopf bonacure repair rescue sealed ends.. it really helps with the ends and damaged part..

  3. Hi Saumya, I have been there and lived to tell the tale!! Don’t lose hope, patience is the key. I rebonded my hair continously, till one fine day realised that my hair and me were on the verge of breaking up because of the abuse I subjected it 🙁 It has been a 1.5 year I stopped rebonding/straightening/using any kind of styling tools and my hair has quite much recovered. Here are the things I followed.

    1. I stopped using any silicones on my hair, for I saw that the day when I shampooed and conditioned with Silicones my hair although well behaved, felt very lifeless limp and looked as if they were crying and sulking!! I stoped using the CONEs totally.
    2. For me, a SLS free shampoo, made my scalp healthy, clean and flake free. My mom makes this homemade herbal gooey shampoo of amla, reetha, shikakai and fennel seeds, its not fancy, doesnt produce lather, but very effective in cleansing the excessive sebum. We just need to wash our hair to get rid of excessive sebum, but washing with surfactants(SLS) undiluted is like using undiluted pril to wash your dishes, it leaves a slimy residue as it does on the dishes, hope you get my point.
    3. I started pampering my hair with warm oil treatments. My pre-poo routine usually is mixing mustard oil, sesame oil, olive oil, coconut oil, sesa oil with vit E capsules, double boiling a bit and giving myself a pampering massage twice a week. Its a treat worth not missing!!
    4. As tempting it might sound or appealing they seem, do not use any chemical locha mumbo jumbo hydrating masks/conditioners which contain silicones, its a vicious cycle. When you stop using them initially Your hair might feel dry, frizzy and random people would throw random suggestions at you (Like what I am doing now 😛 ), but healthy hair is hands down beautiful hair.

The most important thing is, do not think that your hair is the problem. The way you treat your hair is the problem. Your car reflects your purchasing power similarly your hair reflects your genes, which you cant change/alter. Once, I stopped forcing my wavy, thick, frizzy hair to behave like a silky poker straight types, the one which it is simply not, my hair health started improving. My hair is still wavy, tangles a lot, but I love it for the way it is, and I am not complaining as long it is healthy. I can detangle it patiently as long as it is not damaged.

Have some patience, and start eating healthy, restricting the silicones and sulphates you dump on your hair, stressing less, your hair would be healthy!!

One tip: If you cant get hold of any SLS free shampoo, dont worry, still use the one you use, but dilute the shampoo 1part to 5 parts water.

I currently use homemade shampoo with TBS rainforest moisture hair butter, sometimes hibiscus leaves puree as conditioner. I dont have the time use any homemade/DIY hair masks, but these simple changes have really helped my hair.
