JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar

JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar Review

By Katyayini Kabir Kakar

I was introduced to the concept of shampoo bars a couple of months back by a youtube blogger, who has these lovely long luscious locks. I had been desperately looking for a solution to save my rapidly thinning hair and was ready to do whatever it takes to protect them. After trying a gazillion shampoos in the market from the regular Loreal, Schwarzkopf and Wella to the high end Shiseido and Kerastase, I was left with absolutely no options. They were just over-priced shiny bottles which seemed to have no effect on my precious mane. After watching her video in which she spoke about the positive effects this bar was having on her hair, I decided to give it a shot.

Price: INR 2300.

Priced at a whooping Rs 2300/- for a 99gm bar, this definitely doesn’t come cheap. I decided to order the original and the damaged hair formula which cost me around 5k. However, one look at the packaging and you are floored. A few facts about the bar which are pretty impressive and support the claims of the bar being au-naturale!

JR Ligggett’s Claims:

  • It’s made entirely from pure 100% natural oils.
  • It contains NO animal products, or preservatives.
  • It doesn’t strip hair of its natural oils.
  • It rinses out clean and easily.
  • It’s especially good for permed or colored hair.
  • It gives your hair body, and manageability.
  • It leaves your hair soft, healthy and smelling clean.
  • 100% Biodegradable with minimal packaging.
  • No Sodium Laurel Sulfate or DEA.

Story of Origin:

There is also a tale about it’s origin which goes as follows: J.R. Liggett found an old New England recipe for shampoo many years ago and started sharing bars with family and friends. He realized that the shampoo was very popular, and started selling it commercially in the mid-1980s.

Product Specifications:

Coming back to its specifications, it says on the packaging that each bar offers the approximate number of usages as a 24 oz. bottle of most modern shampoos. 24 oz. would roughly translate to 710 ml, and 5 washes later this bar is still as good as new.

My Experience with JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar:

Application: The shampoo bar is pretty easy to use. Wet your hair completely and run it over your scalp a couple of times. Create a lather by running your fingers through your hair, although the lather will be fairly less than your normal shampoo, it will leave your hair squeaky clean. The first couple of times, I did not get it right and used fair too much of the bar on my scalp, which left it a little oily and my hair became limp after the wash. But I eventually got it right and now I can confidently advise you all to rub it not more than 3 times over your scalp.

Storage: Storage needs to be taken care of, as these bars are like soaps which can disintegrate fairly quickly if left open near a water source. The best thing to do is to buy a wooden container from JR Liggett’s for the same, however I have also come across cheaper alternatives like wrapping the bar in a piece of aluminium foil and storing it in a dry place, after every use.

Pros of JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar:

  • Reduced hairfall while retaining the strength and volume.
  • Hair feels light because there is no product buildup on the scalp.
  • No need of a conditioner, it does the job well.
  • Sulphate-free formula ensures that there is no hair damage.
  • Cleans thoroughly, removing any dirt or grime.

Con of JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar:

Expensive. Can be a major pinch in the pocket

Would I Repurchase JR Liggett’s Shampoo Bar Review?

Yes, yes, yes!

I have just used it over 5 times, but I am beginning to notice a reduction in hair fall and my scalp is not as itchy as it used to be earlier. I do not use any conditioner after this because it doesn’t really strip my hair of it’s natural oils so they stay pretty tamed all day long. I use it twice a week and my hair is fairly clean during that time. I am definitely not giving up on these bars and would be buying more of these in the future. My next purchase would be the JR Liggett’s Shampoo bar-Coconut and Argan oil. Hope to retain my hair’s former glory with this age old formulations. Good luck to me!

  1. Whoa!! 2.3k for a shampoo…that’s really expensive. But I guess its worth it coz it looks like a genuine herbal product.

  2. OMGG!! that looks like I have gone back to the the old world. Looks soo pretty but it’s so expensive. 😐 sometimes we do have to take extreme measures though for our well being. very good review. 🙂

  3. Look at that packaging it comes in…..super review Katyayani 🙂 If it can reduce hair fall, I wouldn’t mind the splurge 🙂

  4. I think you were referring to Farah Dhukai. I love her! I am so amazed that this works! But how do you get this stuff in India?
