Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil Review

Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil Review

By Esha J.

Hi Again!

A few months ago, while flipping channels on the TV, I saw a socialite raving about argan oil; “Trust me guys, it’s MAGIC!” was what she had to say about the effect of applying two drops of the said product on hair. Upon researching further, I found out that argan oil (popularly known as Moroccan oil) is a rather versatile product for hair and skin. I was convinced that it could be the solution for my “hairy woes.” Was I right? Read on to find out:

Kiehl's Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil Review

Although, I wanted to buy 100% pure argan oil, the only product that I could find in Delhi-NCR that contained a decent percentage of argan oil was Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil. I was so impressed with all the praises I read on the internet about it that I planned a visit to Vasant Kunj just to get it. For a bottle of oil, the price was exorbitant, but my desire for shiny, lustrous locks and radiant skin finally got the better of me. I walked out of the Kiehl’s store with a pocket much lighter, and a heart much heavier with guilt. Evidently, my expectations from this product were HUGE.

The KCR (Kiehl’s Customer Representative) gave me sample baubles of Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution and Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which I’m yet to use.

Ingredients

Dicaprilyl Ether, Dicaprilyl Carbonate, Apricot kernel oil, Squalene, Caprilylic Triglyceride, Isopropyl Isostearate, Argan oil, Sesame seed oil, Jojoba seed oil, Avocado oil, Tocopherol, Olive fruit oil, Sweet almond oil, Fragrance, Cedrus atlantica bark oil, Orange peel oil, limonene, Eucalyptus globulus leaf oil.

My Experience with Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil:

Nothing fancy about the packaging. A regular, clear, plastic bottle, a white screwed on cap with a flip top, which dispenses the product in drops, but has the tendency to drip along the sides.

The oil is light golden-yellow in color, and has a very strong, woody-musky smell which I find well, strange. But it subsides rather quickly, so I don’t mind.  The dry oil is extremely light and runny in consistency. I usually rub 2-3 drops of the oil onto the ends of my hair while they are still damp, and it gets absorbed quickly. The key here is to not use too much, otherwise you’ll end up with greasy hair. It doesn’t spread too well on dry hair and you end up applying too much which turns hair greasy. I notice a wee bit of shine and softness once my hair dries completely, but nothing that a regular leave-in conditioner can’t do.

However, the product lives up to its claim of leaving the skin silky, smooth and healthy looking. I love how it makes my arms and legs appear all radiant and supple when I use it post-bath. Quantity-wise, a little goes a long way and the bottle will last me quite a while.

I even tried using it as a night treatment for my face, but after a few days when I noticed tiny zits sprouting on my face, I immediately discontinued using it. It was too late though. My skin broke out badly and still hasn’t recovered. I’d like to believe something else caused the breakout, but I can’t risk bringing this stuff near my face again.

Pros of Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil:

  • Leaves the skin looking silky, smooth and healthy.
  • It’s a dry oil. Hence, gets absorbed quickly without any greasiness.
  • A little goes a long way.
  • Fairly traded.

Cons of Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil:

  • Contains a much lower percentage of argan oil as compared to absolute pure argan oil.
  • Imparts no dramatic shine or softness to hair. A decent leave-in conditioner would work just as well.
  • Leaves hair greasy even if a tad bit more is used.
  • Gave me breakouts when used on the face.
  • Uninspiring packaging.
  • Expensive.
  • Can easily be replaced with much cheaper products.

Do I Recommend Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil?

Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil is a rather mediocre product that can easily be substituted for cheaper products that, I believe, would work equally well. However, a lot of people swear by it and claim that they can’t live without it, so if you’re curious and don’t mind the splurge, go ahead and try, it might just work for you. For me, it’s certainly not a must have, and definitely NOT magic!

  1. @ Pooja
Elma and Sana Argan Oil is pretty good. It’s organic, too.
Also, Josie Maran’s products are the best for Argan Oil fans. All others, like you noted, are just using the name to sell their stuff!
