Lime Crime Lana Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick Review

Hey lovely ladies,

Super excited to share this review with you today. Yes, it is a liquid lipstick but with a twist! So, post the whole liquid lipstick phase – not mine, but of the beauty industry, there came the metallic lipstick phase. Most brands put up their offerings – whether in liquid or regular bullet form. Honestly, I was intrigued, but my thought was that if I can achieve the same effect with some pigment/eyeshadow/highlighter on top of my regular lipstick – why bother? Right?

Still, when I got a chance to try the whole range of lipsticks from Lime Crime, which included the metallics, I was kicked and went ahead and picked this one up. Honestly, I wanted a few others too, but thankfully, they were sold out! 😉

Product Details:
The original liquid matte lipstick inspired by rose petals. The liquid matte that started it all. Conceptualized and developed by Lime Crime CEO Doe Deere, Velvetines draw inspiration from her favorite flower – a red, red rose. Doe used to cut out rose petals and paste them onto her lips as a child. Richly pigmented, French vanilla-infused formula glides on as a liquid and dries down to a luxurious, velvety matte finish that lasts for hours and hours. Touch-proof, kiss-proof and utterly addictive! Long lasting metallic liquid lipstick in a burnished bronze hue.

What it does: Makes your lips feel luxurious and velvety, like a rose. Lasts all day with minimal touch-ups, even through meals.

What it won’t do: Bleed or transfer. Dry out properly moisturized lips. Ruin the perfect kiss. Certified Cruelty Free and Vegan.

I have discussed this in my previous reviews as well – Rustic, Polly, Saddle.

Kat Von D, Too Faced, Joeur, Huda Beauty, Kylie Liquid lipsticks, Beauty Bakerie, Smashbox, MAC, etc. However, considering the amount of product you get, probably makes this one of the most expensive liquid lipsticks in its league.

For details:
Huda Beauty liquid Matte – $20 – 5 ml
Kat Von D Everlasting – $20 – 6.6 ml
Lime Crime Velvetine – $20 – 2.6 gm.

Packaging:
The metallics come packaged in the same packaging as the regular lipsticks. It comes packaged in the their trademark red boxes with roses on it – the owner’s favourite flower. The box has a strip on it which has the shade name and ingredient mentioned on it and is colour coordinated to the shade of the lipstick – makes it easy to locate if you have more than one and if you store them in the box itself.

The liquid lipstick tube itself has a frosted transparent tube with a cap carrying the same pattern as the box – eye-catching and a tad bit girlie.

The applicator is a standard doe-foot applicator. Since the size of the tube is small, the length of the wand is also small. This allows you for more precise application. I am able to get good decent clean lines with the wand – I have never needed to use a separate brush for it – even though the brand has advised regarding the use of a brush, if required.

My Experience with Lime Crime Lana Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick:

Color:  So, this wasn’t my first choice for a metallic lipstick from Lime Crime. I wanted Vibe and Posh – more pink/purple, easier-to-wear tones. Unfortunately, both were sold out and I was left with Lana and a couple other more n(de shades. Since I had already closed out on Pumpkin and Saddle, I thought I could make Lana work with them. That’s why I decided to pick this. As the website describes it accurately – it is a burnished bronze hue. Metallic to the core but still not blingy. It is kind of difficult to explain. The shade is distinctly metallic and yet it isn’t over the top and nor would I describe it as muted. To me, it seems perfect to wear – for a day event or an evening out, both.

The shade itself is a gorgeous metallic bronze. I am so I picked this one up! I just love it – especially with Saddle.

As they say, there are no rules in makeup. It is a creative outlet and you get to do whatever it is that you want! Plus, you can wash it off! (Yes, with a good cleansing oil, but that’s another story!) Having said that, I do feel that you will get optimum oomph from the product if you follow the same contouring/highlighting principle on your lips as you do on your face. So, the metallic lipstick – though can be used on its own – will really shine (pun intended) if you use it for highlighting your lips rather than as an all-over colour. I have used it in both ways and shared pics of both looks for your reference. I do feel that it looks better in Look 1 where Saddle forms the base and Lana has been used only on the centre of the lips to highlight. In case of Saddle and Lana – the colours mesh so well – it is like they are made for each other. However, you could use Lana over any other shade as well.

And to show its true colour, I have used it on its own – no base lipstick / no lip liner, in Look 2. You will see how smooth and even the pigment is in Look 2 – the metallic pigment does not settle into the fine lines or separate out unevenly on the lips.

Texture:  The texture of the lipstick is consistent with the line – quite liquidy. It has excellent pigmentation and gives full coverage for the entire lip in one dip. The bigger challenge when using a metallic lip is that;

  • It can tend to cling onto the lips as it wears.
  • The pigment tends to accumulate in crevices and lip lines.
  • The metallic pigment tends to feel gritty.
  • The metallic pigment can spread unevenly or separate from the liquid.

This one has NONE of these concerns! The texture has been worked out really well. The lipstick performs just like a regular Lime Crime velveteen.

The lipstick dries down fairly quickly. Once set, it’s fairly budge-proof. It is not very drying but it’s not hydrating either. If you have any flakes on your lips, it will cling to those patches. However, on its own, it won’t really create flakes or make your lips look prunish. The brand does suggest hydrating the lips before application.

Pigmentation:  Pigmentation is very good. The liquid lipstick goes on smoothly and settles into a matte finish and covers any lip pigmentation very well. The pigment goes on evenly – it doesn’t bunch up or sink into the crevices.

Lasting Power:  This shade lasts a decent 6-7 hours or so. Again, a lot will depend on what you eat/drink in the interim and the oil content of the same. This is because oil starts breaking down the formula. However, even when it starts disappearing from the inner rim of the lips, it appears fairly natural and there is no clumping, etc.

Fragrance: There is a distinct sweet fragrance…like that of vanilla cupcakes. It could definitely be an issue for someone who has a sensitive nose. I’m not too fond of it, but find it tolerable because it dissipates fairly quickly.

Pros of Lime Crime Lana Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick:

  • A stunning metallic bronze shade.
  • Lightweight texture.
  • Good pigmentation.
  • Easy to apply with the applicator – very easy to get clean lines.
  • It applies smoothly and evenly.
  • No feathering or bleeding.
  • Decent packaging.
  • Easy to identify colour from the tube itself.
  • Does not flake.
  • Good wear time – 6-7 hours.
  • Vegan formula.
  • Not overtly drying, does not create dry patches post use.
  • Cruelty free.

Cons of Lime Crime Lana Velvetines Liquid Matte Lipstick:

  • Will accentuate dry patches, if they already exist.
  • Fragrance could be an issue for some.
  • The quantity is almost half/less than half of other brands in the market, in the same price range.

IMBB Rating:
A 5/5 product.

The one fact that comes through with this product is how well the metallic lipstick has been done. The pigment does not separate, it does not fall into the fine lines of your lips, it does not accumulate, it does not feel gritty, the metallic pigment does not cling to the lip as it wears, it has the same wear as the regular Lime Crime lipstick. I think this may well be the most perfect metallic lip! I hope that the other shades in the line are consistent to this – I’m super excited to pick Vibe and Posh!
