My Hair Type:

I have shoulder length hair which is relaxed and highlighted. I have also rebonded my hair thrice in the past seven years. My scalp is oily, but my hair is slightly dry because of chemical relaxing.

My Take on L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil:

I try to oil my hair regularly at least during summer. I believe in Ayurveda and try to follow some of its principles at least as much as I can. I believe oiling cools our whole body which is necessary during summer. I use Parachute coconut oil for this, but if I oil my hair with coconut oil, I cannot go out and coconut oil cannot be used in winters. Because of this, I also try to find non-oily oils 😛 that can be used as leave-in treatments especially when swimming. I was using an Australian brand argan oil before picking up this one.

This oil comes in a gold bottle with a gold lid. There is another version with a red lid, which is for coloured hair. This product is supposed to be a budget version of the L’Oreal professional Mythic Oil.  This oil is produced by L’Oreal Paris, but the mythic oil is by L’Oreal Professionnel.

I really like the packaging, the glass bottle makes it feel kind of posh, like a salon branded product and the pump makes it so much easier to dispense the right amount of product without making a huge mess. The scent is floral with musky note, but not the kind of fragrance which attracts me. In fact, the fragrance is one of the biggest drawbacks for me.

Additionally, this oil leaves an oily powdery residue in my hands which is quite annoying. I first tried it in damp hair before styling. Because my ends are a bit dry and brittle, I only applied a pea-sized amount to the length and ends, not on my roots, and then left my hair to dry naturally. This made my hair smoother than usual without many fly-aways. This smoothness was there even on the next day. Looking at the list of ingredients, we can conclude that it isn’t 100% pure oil, its mostly silicone. Silicones coat the hair and creates buildup, so whatever effect it leaves is temporary.

My next favourite way to use it is as a pre-treatment prior to a hair wash. I use this before swimming to make sure my hair doesn’t attract chlorine. This, I feel protects my hair from chlorine.

Overall, this is a good oil to use regularly, but I prefer pure argan oil as the effects are permanent and argan oil is also light with a mild fragrance.

Pros of L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil:

  • Sturdy and expensive looking packaging.
  • Has the following oils to nourish hair – chamomile extract, coconut oil, lotus extract, flax seed extract, gardenia extract, and dog rose extract.
  • Gives temporary smoothness to hair and makes it look sleek when applied.
  • Protects my hair from chlorine when swimming.

Cons of L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil:

  • Contains silicones so it causes build-up if used regularly.
  • Effects are temporary.
  • I personally didn’t like the fragrance at all, it smells artificial and medicinal to me; however, you might like the fragrance.

IMBB Rating:

3.5/5

This is a long overdue review. I have finished using this bottle in the past 6 months. I would not repurchase this, but would like to try the mythic oil or aveda oil.
