MAC Constructivist Paint Pot Review

MAC Constructivist Paint Pot

There was once a merry young girl who lived in the city of joy, she was doted on by her parents and loved by all. Well my fairytale came to an abrupt halt when my job required me to relocate to Chennai. This was the first time I was staying away from home. The whole kaleidoscope had changed around me and I felt like I was thrown into the savanna having to fend for myself. On top of that hectic work schedules and the humid weather made it even harder. One of the few things that offered refuge was my “habit”. I had developed it one and half years back when I first started dabbling in makeup and following IMBB but it took shape after coming to Chennai. Whenever I found myself free time or I felt down and out I would pull out my makeup collection and create looks or simply look at them and admire.

Before coming to Chennai while buying makeup I seldom ventured into medium end brands, let alone high end ones and stuck to my drugstore staples. But on a particularly hot Saturday while I was touring the famous express avenue mall( and sweating profusely as the central A.C was not on) I came across the mac store there and with a lot of gusto I entered. The SA’s there were delightfully docile and helpful( unlike others who descend on you like vultures :). Although I wished to rob the store I came back home with three paint pots, one of which I am reviewing today 🙂 .

Product description

Mac paint pots are cream eye shadows which also doubles up as an eye shadow base. They have a variety of beautiful colors. The one that I am reviewing today is aptly called constructivist due to it earthy base.

Price 1100 INR for 5 gms.

My experience with constructivist

Constructivist comes in a classic MAC packaging. A sturdy glass jar with a screw on black cap. The packaging allows one to use every bit of the product. However due to its large mouth the product can get dried up fast.
The color is murky plumy brown with well-integrated very fine bronze/red shimmers and some sparse slightly larger bronze shimmers. When swatched the bronze shimmers translate to a beautiful understated warm sheen, which is not too frosty but keeps the color from appearing flat matte. This is one of those colors, which appears different on different skin tones. Its fairly neutral so it can be paired up with most lip colors and blushes.

Pigmentation in a single swipe is decent and semi opaque which is build able. The texture is soft but not too creamy, which allows one to pick up the right amount of product. It dries down to a waterproof and smudge proof finish within seconds of application.

Mac paint pots are very quick drying. To avoid a patchy uneven finish one has to work very fast with them. In my experience using my fingers rather than a brush yields better results as the oil in my fingertips does not allow the product to dry too fast. But it also leads to wastage of product as some of it gets dried up on my finger. If you are using a brush be sure to use a synthetic brush, as a natural hair brush will soak a lot of the product. I have a very unorthodox way of wearing it. I actually make my eyelids a bit oily by using a light lotion, apply the product and then let it dry. The color stays vibrant on my oily lids close to 6 hours after which it progressively looses its intensity fading evenly. However when topped with eyeshadow the combination lasts a impressive 7-8 hours on me.

Who can use it?

Constructivist has a earthy neutral base with a warm touch which allows it to be suitable for most skin tones and eye colors. However due to the murky quality of the color it may not show true to pan on duskier women and those with pigmented eyelids. I have very pigmented eyelids so on my bare lids it shows up as a nice warm brown sheen, I have to pack on the product for the plumminess to be visible. However on fairer skin tones it will show up more vibrant and true to pan. The color also has a pearly finish so it tends to accentuate any fine lines/wrinkles on the lids.

Finally I’ll sum up the pros and cons as follows

Pros

  •  Beautiful universally flattering color
  •  Can be paired with both heavy and light make up.
  •  Work as excellent bases for eyeshadows
  •  Highly pigmented so a little goes a long way.
  •  Dries to a smudge proof and waterproof finish and can act as an excellent base for any brown based smokey eye look.
  •  Lasts for a very long time (6 hours on average).
  •  Huge amount of product, which will last you a long time.

Cons

  •  It is a little difficult to apply due to its quick drying quality.
  •  Price is a little steep although I feel the amount you get for it justifies the price.
  •  The pearly finish may accentuate any fine lines or wrinkles.

Will I recommend it?

I really don’t need to elaborate here. It’s a must have color for Indian skin tones and I totally recommend it.

IMBB rating
4.9/5, I’ll deduct the .1 for difficulty in application.
