Mayonnaise Hair Treatment For Dry and Damaged Hair: DIY

Hello Lovely Faces,

Festivals are over and life is back to the normal routine. I am sure you all had lots of fun during the festivals; I too had so much fun with friends and family. While I was busy in festival preparations, I could not get any time to take care of my hair and to make them look good.  I went for quick fixes like blow drying and ironing my hair several times. All this hot styling rips off the moisture out of the hair and makes them look dry and dull and if you have naturally dry and curly hair, then the situation gets worse. Therefore, today I decided to pamper my hair with a moisturizing hair pack and thought it would be great to share the same with you all. Mayonnaise is basically a rich mixture of natural oils and eggs which is rich in natural fats and vitamin A,B and D, very good for hair or skin to provide moisture. It is an all natural and inexpensive way to provide deep conditioning treatment to hair.

Mayonnaise Hair Treatment For Dry and Damaged Hair DIY

So, here is the step-by-step recipe of a very moisturizing, hydrating and a very easy mayonnaise hair treatment:

Ingredients Needed:

1 cup Mayonnaise (for shoulder length hair, take more or less as per your hair length, and take less mayonnaise if you have oily hair), olive oil, essential oil of your choice (to combat the smell of mayonnaise), one bowl and a spoon.
Step 1:

Gather all the ingredients needed. Take 1 cup or 4 big spoons of mayonnaise in the bowl.

Mayonnaise

Step 2:

Add 2 spoons full of olive oil in it. Put a few drops of essential oil of your choice and mix them together very well.

Mayonnaise Hair Pack 1

Step 3:

Divide your hair in 4 parts by parting from front to back and then from ear to ear. Now, divide each part again in 4 parts and apply the mixture in your hair and scalp too.

Hair Pack

Step 4:

After covering your hair and scalp completely with mayonnaise mixture, cover it up with a plastic wrap, or shower cap and then with a towel to create heat inside, this will help the pack to penetrate deep and work better.

Step 5:

Leave the pack on for 1 hour minimum and then wash your hair with cold water using any mild shampoo. Do not wash your hair with hot water, as that can cook the egg in mayonnaise and will leave a sticky film on hair, so use cold water only to wash hair :P

Hair Mask

That is all and you will get soft, moisturized hair like never before.

Extra Information:

One can add extra egg also in this pack if you want, or if you are using the vegetarian mayonnaise which claims to have no egg in it, then add an egg if you can. However, if you are vegetarian like me and cannot bring egg inside home, then buy the mayonnaise with egg and use it only for your hair. This way you will get the goodness of egg for your hair without breaking the “no egg at home” rule :)  You can skip the essential oil if you have no issue with the smell of mayonnaise. I have used it just to suppress the smell.

This mayonnaise hair pack can also be used for kids as an effective lice treatment. Thick mayonnaise helps to suffocate the lice, and makes it easier to remove eggs without the use of harsh anti-lice shampoos.  So, what are you waiting for, open your refrigerator and take out that mayonnaise and give this deep conditioning treatment to your hair to get soft, moisturized hair.

I wanted to apply mayonnaise in my hair for a long time, but did not find the right one. The one available in departmental stores are some reddish/orange color, so thought it is customized for food and not for hair. Where did you buy from?

Hey Sweta! I have tried this mayonnaise hair mask once before, however i found it too smelly and sticky which put me off. I guess I will try it again with an essential oil as suggested. Thanks :D

Hi Insiya,
its true that the smell of mayo can remain in your hair which is not good so use essential oil and use nice smelling shampoo, that will reduce the meyo smell from hair :)

thanks sweta!!.. i will definitely try this pack… we keep eggless mayonnaise for consumption purpose at home coz of strict “no egg” rule… will see if i can get an egg one..
also one question will an eggless mayonnaise be equally effective for dull hair or the addition of egg is mandatory??

sweta November 22, 2012 at 10:16 am

without egg also mayonnaise still has lots of fatty oil which is good for hair but as you know egg contains protein and it makes hair very soft and shiny so mayonnesia with egg or adding one egg will do better job then eggless mayonnaise according to me :)
