NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil in New Lover Review

NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil in New Lover

Product Purchased by IMBB

Hey guys!

I was having a conversation with some members of the IMBB gang the other day, when I found out that I wasn’t the only one using a rather interesting makeup-testing technique. Of course, I put Nars’ New Lover Velvet Gloss pencil to that test. But to find out what the test is and how this product performed you’ll have to read on!

Product Description

According to Sephora’s website, this product is “a glossy lip pencil with a smooth, buttery texture.” The “innovative lip pencil,” they say, “coats lips in stunning, glossy color with moisturizing ingredients vitamin E, hyaluronic spheres, and phytosterolesthers.”

The shade New Lover is described as a “gold infused strawberry pink.”

My Experience with Nars Velvet Gloss Pencil in New Lover

Much like a new lover, this pencil has made me feel a lot of things. It set my heart aflutter when I first spotted the gorgeous shade. There was some hesitation to give it my heart because I wasn’t sure if it would show up on my pigmented lips. And, finally, there was a mustering up of courage to take the plunge and commit to it. I’m so glad I picked this shade as a gift from IMBB. It’s a departure from the deeper shades I tend to favor; but it’s such a gorgeous shade it’s bound to become anyone’s favorite in no time. And yes, it has passed “the test” I was referring to earlier, which by the way happens to be *drumroll* Zumba class! I was surprised to find out that other IMBBians, too, use Zumba class as an opportunity to test their makeup. So let’s get to how pencil performs, in Zumba class and otherwise!

Let’s start with the shade, coverage and texture. New Lover looks like a coralish- light pink with golden shimmer on me. For reference, I am an NC40 in MAC and have pigmented lips that are a couple of shades darker than my skin tone. The coverage is sheer, but buildable. I have to run the pencil across my lips about 2-3 times to get the desired coverage. The texture leans more toward creamy lipsticks and the pencil goes on very smooth on the lips and gives them a glossy finish. Although this is supposed to be a “gloss pencil,” the formula isn’t really a good substitute for gloss. However, for someone like me, who’s averse to wearing lip gloss in the daytime (I think it looks tacky) this is a great option for creating a glossy yet subdued look.

What really works for me is the combination of the shade and the formula — they’re both perfect spring/summer. The light formula is moisturizing and imparts beautiful color to the lips without them look overdone and the the coral-pink is perfect for bright, sunny days. Because this comes in a pencil form, touch ups are super easy, which makes this perfect for days you’re outdoors or on the go. The light gold shimmer is super flattering on my warm skin tone. And even though the shade shows up on me looks different from what the pencil looks like, I really love the end color. It’s still vibrant and flattering on my tan skin tone.

This lasts on me for about 3 hours which, frankly, is as much as I expected it to. There is no stain left behind as this fades on me. I did test it through Zumba class a couple of times and I’m happy to say that it lasted through my hour of Zumba and started to only when I grabbed my post workout coffee. A little bit of it does transfer on to food and drink, although it’s not the worst I’ve seen. The gloss pencil does not feather or bleed outside of the lip line. I usually line my lips with the pencil itself and it stays put!

So, I’ve shared all the things I love about this pencil, but have to add that it’s not without flaws. It’s one major drawback is that there’s way too much product loss when I sharpen this. I use Urban Decay’s Grindhouse sharpener to sharpen it and my heart literally sinks when I see the product stuck in the blades. This is an issue a lot of people have with Nars’ pencils. The fact that they’re pretty pricey, for the amount of product you get, makes it so much worse. With these pencils, there’s really no way to put them in a push-up packaging since they’re too soft and will crumble. So, really, there’s no way out of this problem, well except repurchasing. Which brings me to my next point…yes I will definitely repurchase this shade. I love it and I’m sure you will too!
