Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte in Stalker Review

Hello IMBBians,

Long time, no see! Some of you might remember me, but I’m sure many of you don’t, as IMBB has an ever growing readership. I used to write here regularly, but for the past year, I have just had different priorities; IMBB has always been on my mind though, I healthily-stalk it as much as I can. I have been meaning to get back to writing on IMBB on a regular basis and what better time to restart than this festive season! Without further ado, let me dive into the details of this much-talked about product that I have the absolute honour of reviewing for you all today. My sister visited from USA recently and of course I sent a long list of makeup goodies that I wanted her to bring along with her, including various shades of OCC Lip Tars. The makeup blogosphere’s lip section has been dominated by the OCC Lip Tars when it comes to higher-end lip colors. The product does complete justice to the aura the OCC Lip Tars exude in the makeup world. I was lucky enough to find a good holiday set, which had many best=selling lip tars in their mini version. That particular set is no longer available at OCC,but each of the included shades in it is individually available still. Let’s focus on the shade “Stalker” for today.

My Experience with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte in Stalker:

Packaging:  It comes in a very conveniently packed tube, all OCC lip tars do.  Upon unscrewing the white top, we see a nozzle that releases just enough product when the tube is squeezed. I should mention that one should proceed with caution when squeezing the tube, as these are highly pigmented and you only need just a little amount of product for each use and once the product is out of the tube, it is impossible to put it back in. Every shade comes with a brush, the OCC Precision Lip Brush, you don’t need any other tool to perfectly apply the colours, and this brush does a fine job by itself. If you are going for a very light stain, you can use your fingers to spread and pat the color on, but if it is precision you seek, then you do need a lip brush, which luckily they provide.

Color:  Stalker is described as a “true blue-based red.” Normally, for Indian skin tones, we are encouraged to try orange-based or warmer reds, but nevertheless, even a blue-based red can look very attractive on us. I love to rock a blue-based red more than a warmer one because I feel it really comes across more red and less orange and it makes our teeth look whiter. This shade, Stalker, is a beautiful bold red, even with the tiniest amount it comes across extremely pigmented. On removal, your lips are stained and you would need an oil-based remover to completely get rid of the color and sometimes even after using a remover, the lips are still stained. It is the kind of shade that is meant for evening wear as it’s very dark, but to each their own. Since I have bought this shade, I have worn no other red for parties or weddings. It is my go-to-bold-in-your-face red these days.

Texture:  It is a very thick cream, which makes it easy to control the amount of product that comes out of the nozzle as opposed to a runny cream. Once a bead is taken on the brush and on the lips, it spreads very easily, it is not very quick drying, you do have a decent amount of time to satisfactorily distribute the color. The lip tar has peppermint oil in it, so it tingles just a teeny bit, nothing overly noticeable though. It is a matte shade upon drying; meaning, during application. it looks glossy, but within a few minutes, it starts to dry and then stays matte for the whole duration of wear. It is a comfortable matte shade i.e., it doesn’t feel too drying, but after 3-4 hours, it starts to feel drier, but a simple lip balm application makes it comfortable again.

Fragrance: The primary fragrance that hits us is of peppermint, but it is very subtle not at all irritating to the senses. It does linger beyond the initial application, but eventually wears out after 2 hours or so.

Staying Power:  I was going through the official page where this shade can be bought from, it doesn’t specify a particular wear-time, but just says “unparalleled .. wear time.” In my experience, it lasts till you use a remover to get rid of the color, even if it is after 12 hours, it is very, very long wearing! It does start to fade first from the centre of the lips, especially when you eat and drink during the wear, but because it stains the lips the fading is not unflattering.

Application: You need the tiniest bead of this for complete, opaque coverage. It is important to use the tiniest amount not just because the product is pigmented, but because if you use more than the required amount, it starts to bleed into the very fine lines around our lips.  A liner is not needed, but for events and functions, I apply a liner anyway, so as to have the peace of mind that it won’t bleed. Whatever amount you think you need, use half of that amount; after enough uses, you get the hang of controlling the quantity, but initially, I suggest being very careful.

Pros of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte in Stalker:

  • The color is a very classic, pin-up, bold, red – the kind of shade red-lovers will be delighted to own.
  • The staying power is incredible.
  • The texture, even for a matte is not super-drying.
  • Comes with a brush, that is absolutely needed for precise application.
  • The pigmentation is a dream, even at $18, I feel it is a good investment for anyone as the color would last years and years with no end in sight.
  • If you have other lip tars, mixing shades to get new colours is very easy.

Cons of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte in Stalker:

  • Reapplication can be tricky as it doesn’t come in typical packaging.
  • If a lot is used, it will start to bleed.
  • You would need to carry a lip balm with you especially if dry lips are a concern.
  • Because the shade is a true matte, proper priming of lips is needed before application (make sure lips are not chapped and are adequately moisturised).
  • Not available in India yet.

IMBB Rating:

4.7/5 – I only deduct because the nozzle-head-tube packaging makes reapplication tricky.

Would I Recommend/Repurchase Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar – Matte in Stalker?

I don’t think I need to repurchase this any time soon as it will last me for ages, even though I have a mini version. I absolutely, highly recommend this gorgeous color to anyone who loves a bold red.

I hope this helped and until next time – Happy Makeuping!
