My Experience with Rimmel London 230 Kiss Fatal Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour:

There are 9 shades in total in the Provocalips range. It is weird to see that the range has not been reviewed on IMBB yet. How can this be? I wanted to make it right!  😛  So here’s the review.

Packaging:
This product comes in a double-sided doe foot applicator dipped into 2 containers. The coloured portion called ‘Step 1 Intense Colour’ and white portion with kisses called ‘Step 2 Lock & Shine’. Packaging-wise, the colour on the outside is an exact match for how it will look on the lips, so I really appreciate that. It also looks very cute and is travel-friendly. Step 1 has 4 ml of product and Step 2 has 3 ml.

Shade:
The shade 230 Kiss Fatal is a slightly deep, purply mauve. It is a beautiful one and I see it working for all skin tones. This mauve shade is more prone to bunching into little balls and is very uncomfortable if applied on very dry lips. This shade is very sub-par compared to the other shade I have. This is surprising because I thought these things are more likely to happen with the brighter shades.

Application:
Without lip balm:
If you are going in with this product alone, you have to work as fast as you can because I feel the colour starts to set within a few seconds of application. This is more difficult with brighter colours because you need time to get it precise. It takes 30 seconds to a minute to dry, depending on the amount of product there is on the lips. As it continues to completely dry down and even after it completely dries, it feels uncomfortably tacky.

When applying this, the product gets very patchy if I purse my lips together to get it to distribute evenly. So, I highly recommend not to purse or pop your lips as you are applying this. The inner ring of your lips takes the longest to dry, because there is most amount of moisture there. But once it dries, I still get that annoying tacky feeling on the inner ring. So, that’s when I pop on the ‘Step 2 Lock & Shine’ product. It feels comfortable again and I pop it on whenever I need to.

With lip balm underneath:
The application is far easier and the product glides around well. A little too well if there is too much lip balm. It can apply a little patchily if there is too much moisture on the lips. So, it is a very high maintenance lip product, but if you take out a minute of your time to do it right, you don’t have to touch it up the entire day (save for reapplying a lip balm or Step 2 product throughout the day) at all.

After the Step 1 product dries, it becomes smudge-proof, transfer-proof and kiss-proof. Which are all good things and worth it! The colour will not fade over time. It stays exactly the same way you applied it at the beginning of the day.

Layering:
I think you can go in with as many layers as you want, but I recommend not more than 2 or at most 3. It starts to get a little cakey and crackly after 2 layers, but that is only visible when you get very close to the mirror and spread your lips. Otherwise, it is not visible even up close. But, it does feel cakey on the lips.

You can also layer it when it starts to fade (around the inner corners of the mouth), and it does just fine. Again, stick with not more than 2-3 layers in total I would say. I recommend applying the second coat after the first coat has completely dried, otherwise you might end up disturbing that first layer.

Step 2:
Coming to the Step 2 product, I feel it is more of a necessity to add moisture after the colour dries which is the main reason they included it. But it is just not a gloss that disappears after a while. It is a little thicker than a traditional gloss, which I think helps in its longevity. It makes the Step 1 infinitely more comfortable on the lips. It only gives the lips a satin to a glossy finish, depending on how much product you apply.

Once I apply the Step 2, I feel like my lips stay moisturised for a good 5 hours or so before I feel the need to touch it up.

Finish:
The finish of the product (Step 1 alone) is incredibly matte. You have the option of topping it off with the Step 2 or a lip balm if you want a satin/glossy finish.

Longevity:
I have tested this product out with many different products and in so many different combinations and I always see that it has the same lasting power. It lasts the entire day, from the moment it dries till you take it off. I have showered with this and eaten incredibly greasy food and the colour does not show a single sign of wearing down. Incredible staying power with this one!

How to Take it Off:
Taking this product off is tricky because of the fact that it is incredibly matte and literally sticks to your lips. I recommend an oil-based remover with a washcloth to remove this, as they mention in the product description. Water-based remover does not seem to work at all.

Smell:
The Step 1 product smells kind of plastic-y, but the Step 2 has a very sweet scent. It is obviously more pleasant, but I don’t smell them once they are on the lips.

Pros of Rimmel London 230 Kiss Fatal Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour:

• Beautiful, intense colour
• Kiss-proof, smudge-proof, transfer-proof
• Colour does not fade over time – even with heavy eating/drinking or even shower/swimming
• Layering is easy and comfortable
• Lasting power is incredible
Beautiful finish

Cons of Rimmel London 230 Kiss Fatal Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour:

• Have to apply the colour quickly as it starts to set quickly
• Step 1 alone is drying on its own – Step 2 is more of a necessity than a ‘nice-to-have’
• After it dries, the Step 1 product remains a little tacky and uncomfortable on the lips for a while if you don’t use lip balm underneath
• If you purse your lips during application, the product becomes patchy
• Very high maintenance product
• Inconsistencies between shades – the mauvy shade bunches up into little balls and flakes off while a fuchsia one does not have that tendency

IMBB Rating:
3/5

Would I Recommend Rimmel London 230 Kiss Fatal Provocalips 16HR Kissproof Lip Colour?
It is a high maintenance product, but if you take your time to get it right at the start of the day, it will really pay off and not budge even a little the entire day. So, if you are OK with sacrificing a little time and effort, this will be your best friend! Otherwise, I would not recommend this at all.

  1. Even I cannot handle such high maintenance lip colors, they are distracting. But, I like the shade, it’s subtle and nice and you have swatched it very nice. Excited for other shade. 🙂
