It has been a hectic week and now weekend is here.  It’s my time to relax and that is exactly what I am doing, writing for IMBB. So today, I am reviewing an eyeliner from Shiseido. I have used a lot of shades from their lipstick collection, but this is my first eye product.  Let’s see how well this eyeliner performed for me.

My Take on Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil – BK901- Black Noir:

Eyeliner has a very important part to play in the day to day make up of every women, but during errands or even just for a change, most of them can skip this part of applying an eyeliner.  But I can never skip using an eyeliner, my heavy lidded eyes make it just impossible for me to do that. I have tried eye make up looks just wearing a mascara and eye pencil on my waterline, but I could never step out of my door with only that. When people saw me without an eyeliner, they always felt I was tired and moody which was not the case.

Shiseido is a brand I love, so when I came across their eye products, I definitely wanted to try out their eyeliners. This one claims to be an eyeliner pencil, which piqued my interest. Usually we come across either eyeliner or eye pencil, but not an eyeliner pencil. Naturally, I was curious to know what it was, but unfortunately they did not have tester to try on. Anyway, I bought it with very high expectations.

This eyeliner pencil has dual ends, the eye pencil on one end and a sponge smudge tip on the other which I felt to be very convenient. The shade is black but not a jet black, it is more of a greyish black where I prefer a more intense black. The texture of this eyeliner is not very smooth or creamy, neither it is hard. I expected it to be on the smoother side as the name itself is defined as a smoothing eyeliner pencil. An eyeliner is expected to glide easily but this pencil did not glide easily on my upper lash line, there was a lot of dragging and pulling while applying. But it was a lot easier to draw on my lower lash line and waterlines, it was actually very smooth and glided quite well giving an actual tight line effect. It has the flow of an eye pencil but not an eyeliner.

It gives a pure matte finish and is best to be used in a smoky eye makeup. I always use this on lower lash line and waterline. It can also be used on top waterline and on the edges of your upper lash line when doing a smoky eye make up. I have very sensitive eyes and this has never caused me any irritation. Certain eye pencils tend to make my eyes watery when applied on waterline but that was never the case with this one. The smudge tip is an added bonus too, it is quite time saving when you are in a hurry and it gives a perfect smudgy effect.  This eyeliner is not said to be waterproof but it is water-resistant to a certain extent and has a very good staying power. It stayed on my waterline for nearly 3 hours and around 6 to 7 hours on my lash line with light feathering in the inner corners of my eyes.

Like all other pencils, you have to sharpen it from time to time, according to the usage, but there is very less wastage of the product while sharpening, hence no cause for heartbreaks.

The eyeliner pencil is enveloped in a black casing with covering tops at both ends. The end holding the sponge smudge tip has an extra base and a tight closure which makes it stay in place, while on the other hand – its counterpart, the pencil is devoid of this special attribute and hence the top falls off easily making it less travel friendly. I feel it should have been the opposite way because the pencil needs more protection than the smudge tip.

I expected more from an eyeliner pencil, that too a product from Shiseido. This can be used as an eye pencil and for minute extra effects on your eyes rather than an eyeliner.

• Blends seamlessly and effortlessly to give the perfect look of your liking.
• It can be used for minute extra effects on your eyes.
• Can be aptly used for a smoky eye look.
• The smudge tip is quite convenient and easy to use.
• Very good staying power.
• It is water-resistant to an extent.
• There is very less wastage of the product while sharpening.

Cons of Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil:

• Being an eyeliner pencil, I expected it to have all the properties of an eyeliner along with an eye pencil, but this one tends to be more of an eye pencil than an eyeliner.
• Not very smooth while using on upper lids, causes a lot of dragging and pulling.
• It is not jet black, some of us prefer intense black colour.
• Not very travel friendly.

IMBB Rating:

3.8/5. I would recommend this product as an eye pencil and not as an eyeliner to all beauties who love to play with their eyes.

Would I Repurchase Shiseido Smoothing Eyeliner Pencil?

No, I would not purchase this eyeliner pencil, mainly because it’s more of an eye pencil than a liner and there are other options for eye pencils available in cheaper brands.
