Celeb-Favorite Smith’s Rosebud Salve

Review

Hey Gorgeous Gals,

Makeup is the perfect small luxury. As someone who is obsessed with pop culture and celebrities, I love that I can rock the same lipstick or mascara as my favorite celebs on my graduate school stipend. So, even though the latest Chanel bag and Choo heels remain out of my reach, I’m pretty content with carrying a lip gloss or blush that I’ve seen in magazines and the movies in my modestly-priced handbag! I’ve seen Smith’s Rosebud Salve make it to the top of many celebrities’ “makeup must haves” lists and decided to try it out for myself. I expected one of two things – either this was the most phenomenal beauty product ever created or the company just has an awesome, super-connected PR Team . 🙂

Product Background and Description

Described by Sephora as a “cult favorite,” the salve has been around for a long, long time. The “Smith’s” part comes from Dr. Robert F. Smith, who in 1895 founded the Rosebud Perfume Company. Dr. Smith created the Rosebud Salve (salve: fancy, old fashioned name for a balm) in response to demands from his customers that he create an all-purpose ointment to treat everything from burns to blemishes. Which is what, exactly, the Salve promises to do today. Well, it also promises to remove your makeup, make your cheekbones stand out, make your lips poutier and heal chapped skin. And believe me, all this it does.
Smith’s Rosebud Salve is packaged in a small, round, tin container. The packaging is pretty and the artwork on it has a very vintage feel. I won’t be surprised if the packaging hasn’t been updated for the past 100 years! However, the packaging certainly lends the product a very charming and quaint look and makes it stand out. The balm’s texture is very close to Vaseline jelly, it actually even smells like plain Vaseline jelly mixed with roses.

Ingredients
You’ve gotta love any product with less than five ingredients, that too, ingredients whose names you can actually pronounce!
The salve contains Cotton Seed Oil, Petrolatum (I guess, fancy, old fashioned name for Petroleum jelly) and Perfume

Price

You get 0.8 oz. for $6 or approximately 300 rupees. Yes, you read that right. Seems the price hasn’t changed for a while, too . 🙂

My Experience with Smith’s Rosebud Salve

When applied to any part of the body, it melts into the skin and gives it a little shine. The first thing I ever used this product for was my lips. I still use it about 5 minutes before I apply lipstick and it really makes them soft and smooth. Even though the product has a pink tint to it, it doesn’t impart any color to my lips or skin. It goes on transparent, which is a relief because I’d hate to be walking around with random pink-tinted elbows and knees 🙂 .

I’ve also used this to treat dry skin around my eyes and in the process discovered that it’s great for removing waterproof eye makeup. It gets all the makeup out and doesn’t clog my pores or dry my skin out. I’ve applied it to dry skin on my elbows, knees and feet overnight and seen great results every single time. I used it to treat a burn once and while it soothed the burn it didn’t stop my skin from scarring :(. I’ve heard people say they use it as a makeup base, but since I have acne-prone skin I think I’ll hold off from using it for that, for now. The wackiest use I’ve found for the product is smoothing my hair out with it after I blow-dry or straighten it. It tames those little flyaways and keeps my hair from getting frizzy in the humidity. Super cool, right?

Pros of Smith’s Rosebud Salve

  •  Multi-purpose. As I’ve shared above, this product truly is good for a number of beauty needs and fulfills them really well!
  •  Value for your money. This has to be one of the cheapest products available at Sephora, no kidding. That combined with the quality of the product makes it a great buy.
  •  Portable. I love the packaging. You can carry it in your handbag or pockets. The tin’s designed really well and the cap never comes off by itself.
  •  Gorgeous packaging. I really love the packaging, it’s unique and functional!
  •  Long lasting. It takes a while to even make a dent in the tin. A little bit goes a looong way.

Cons of Smith’s Rosebud Salve

  •  I really wish it stopped the scarring from burns.
  •  Availability. This might or might not be available at Sephora India. Besides Sephora, I’ve seen this only on Amazon. Wish they’d sell it in more places.

Bottom Line

If you see this, definitely pick it up. It’s a great product for any price. You’ll see yourself replacing quite a few products with this multi-purpose salve.
