Gunjan Asks

I am 23, a mumbaite, normal heighted but blessed with dark or say in modern language dusky complexion. Though I say it a blessing but it is really becoming a concern for me recently, I had tried lot many fairness creams earlier in my teens but soon I realised that were hardly helpin me out, and so I had discontinued using any of them.

From the last 4 – 5 yrs I have been using a moisturizer- earlier nivea soft and now lakme fruit moisturizer. Sometimes I use the home remedies of glowing skin but that is once in week because of my busy schedule.

The problem started when my to be mother-in-law started making issues in my love life (it’s a kinda love marriage typo scene) because of my colour. I need your help you know what brand and what product I can use to atleast lighten my skin colour.

Is it Oriflame? Avon? Lotus? Body shop or Shainaz Hussain or kumkumadi tailam etc…

For me money won’t be a problem only issue is to what product can I use because I don’t want to buy any product js for the heck of it. My hard earned money should be used for the right product as to give me the right results. I don’t want to look like a fairy with fair skin rosy cheeks n blah blah. I need to jst look light skinned, clean and soft and clear skin though not a GORI CHAMDI GAL…

  1. sad that ur mother in law is doing what she is.
    i wish more people would accept us with our skin and other flaws.
    try kacha dudh(milk which is not boiled)apply it everyday great cleanser and helps in lightening the complexion.
    also you can mix lemon juice in honey and apply everyday.these are the two basic remedies without fuss and eevryday use.
    good luck with making ur mother in law relaize ur worth

  2. Kumkumadai oil from Kama ayurveda is good…i dont use it personally but I know people who have used it and it has helped….

    you can try using saffron and milk everyday…like 5-6 strands saffron in 2tbsp milk…massage it on ur face and let it be there till it dries…then rinse ur face with cold water…

    using buttermilk everyday on the face is also supposed to lighten the skin as it has lactic acid .

    You could try the new Shiso whitening range from TBS…or the vichy Biwhite range…

    Hydroquinone creams lighten the skin color but then you would have to see a dermatologist for that..

    Then there are skin lightening and skin whitening treatments …for that you will have to go for sessions at the derm;s clinic…and this is more likely to show results in a shorter span of time as compared to home remedies…

  3. Potatoes contain natural skin bleaching agents and are very inexpensive. Just take a few thin slices of raw potato and rub it on your skin, focusing on the areas that you want to lighten. If you have a little more time, you can grate a raw potato, squeeze out the juice and keep it in the refrigerator. Apply some of the potato juice with some cotton wool and rinse off after about 15 minutes. Again, with daily use, you will see results in about 3-4 weeks of daily use.

  4. hi gunjan..
    :scream: im mad about your M-I-L :waiting: ANYWAYS
    coming to help.. i feel you need to use products acc to your skin types as well ingridents which block the synthesis of melanine( the the pigment which is behind the clour of our skin) some of the ingridents are
    * kojic acid
    * arbutin
    *mulberry extract etc
    some ingridents will hlep remove dead and dull skin so those in conjuction with above will help remove tan as well as even out skin complexion
    * stabilized vit c
    * gylcolic acid
    * salicylic acid
    * latic acid
    as i used to work with dermatologist ( around 16 :jiggy1: ) at a skin clinic we used to get lot of client with the same concern as yours.the following are products which the doctors used to reccomend acc to skin types

    * dr reddy’s clearz plus-
    combination of vit c plus kojic acid- all skin types- for radiance and lighting of marks-night time use-complusory use of sunscreen for effectiveness and long lasting results- price around 165 or so
    * vichy bi white range. info on vichy india website. i had clinets coming in and saying how bi white range was working for a lot of them
    there are other prescribed creams and lotion but im not supposed to recoomend them.. against my professional ethics ( they are prescribed only by dermatologist) thses are two products i feel worth mentioning.. :haanji:

  5. Mother in law :spank: :spank: OMG only because of your complexion…..its relay disgusting………dear we should be proud to Indian dusky complexion ………..there is not any faircream which can make you brighten……….sorry but its true……….but at least we can take care better to indian skin for keep beautiful as ever maintain……..try face pack rawmilk,besan and nimbu past and apply it on your face and nack……..always use sunscreen before outside………wear nice color witch you suit most……..and lactocalamine can help you to make your skin 1-2 tone fair ……….and last but not least do never be urself underestimate at any cost :nonono:

  6. since money is not a problem, please try makari caviar whitening…lots of good reviews..my cousin too is using, and i saw the difference, like her dark spots r gone and her skin kinda glows tho it is not fair..u hav not sed ur skin type;)
    honey and lemon helps a lot too..iuse ricconia silver vitamin supplements O:)

  7. hey gunjan i know it might be extremely frustrating for you but apart from all the home remedies mentioned above, just smile and tackle the situation. Drink lots of water, fresh fruits, salads…those help in bringing out the glow toooo and am sure with “love” and “marriage” and “happiness” you will look lovely and your MIL will sure see you rather than your color…..seen lot of situations back home…thkfully never with myself though am Dusky 😉 :teddy: :teddy:

  8. Can’t believe ur MIL is so mean!! We Indians have the most beautiful and sought after complexions.. And ppl don’t recognize that!

    I feel Lotus Whiteglow Range is quite effective in lightening the complextion, especially the Micro Emulsion. Also, their sunscreens prevent further tanning and sun damage.

    Kasturi Turmeric is a good way to bring a glow to ur skin. Hope this helps..

  9. two thumbs down for your Mil..even in today’s age its sad to see such attitude. You should also perhaps tell her that being dusky is in vogue (Bipasha Basu, couple of the super models etc) and lot of women are striving to be dusky..tanning lotions and all!!

    but having said that, I like the Himalaya fairness lotion. More than making you fair, it keeps the skin clean and makes you look a lot fresher. good luck in dealing with your Mil..I am just thiking that today if its the fairness thing, what else she could bother u going forward 🙁

  10. try mixing saffron in fresh malaai… tht works wonders… :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
    & i really hope ur MIL gets sum buddhi :toothygrin: :toothygrin: …bt anyways just ignore such criticism.. :haanji:

  11. Oh well … now that we are into ‘groom seeking’ process, I am facing this too. All the while I was never sad that I was dusky but now I find some people with really dark skin seeking only ‘fair’ girls and even go to the extent of belittling me when even their own daughter/sister are of my colour or even more darker ! I found it very difficult first but now I am glad that I am dusky because such cheap people are not worthy of me ! :toothygrin:

    Now coming back to you dear … no offense to your MIL but it s sometimes ignorance too .. .as of for the complexion – try eating amla daily, made my skin to glow :preen:

    1. hey … this happend to me when my parents wer finding my mr right…a lot of them did not like my photograph, but when they got to know abt my studies and job, they showed interest in my salary and savings…those ppl are really not worth…they are such cheap jerks, I wanted to stay spinster but never wanted to marry a guy who wud treat me like an ATM….

      1. that is so much true Akhila … I feel the same ! I prefer to be a spinster than marrying a cheap jerk. When will these people ever wake up … as long as these stupid fairness commercials pop up every 5 mins in every channel, there is very little chance to save the sanity of our people. I really want to get rid of this problem somehow but I dunno how to begin. Even if it wouldn t help me, I really want to do something atleast for the sake of the society because I know few husbands who treat their wives like shit just because they are dark. I definitely want to take some step but dunno how and where to start.

        1. I broke off my 6 yr relationship coz I hv become dark in these yrs. And he doesnt love me anymore for this reason. 1) I have become dark, 2) I have become fat. :silly:

          1. Wow. I really thought things were changing… you girls are pretty brave to share these things and warn everyone else… I can’t believe even when we’re excelling in education and making our own money women are getting subjected to these awful standards of beauty…sucks 🙁

  12. Do exercise daily for atleast 15 mins….can do 5-10 Suryanamskar..it will surely help u… :specs:

    1 more suggestion use Oriflame OPTIMAL’S EVEN OUT DAY CREAM WITH SPF20..i have seen the results in my frnd circle :yes: ….it really works(within a week u will notice the difference 😉 :whistle: ) ..price is 690 bt u sureally get this with some discount from ur oriflame consultant… :makeup:

    All the best :pompom: :pompom:

  13. just when i thought we indians had started appreciating how beautiful we are and not obsess about fair skin, i hear about ur MIL….it’s so sad that our society perceives a fair skinned person to be attractive irrespective of the personality, figure, features etc….fair skin is not equal to beautiful…there are so many other factors that determine the beauty of a person….i personally think that Lara Dutta with her flawless olive complexion is one of the most beautiful women in Bollywood…but oh well, maybe Bollywood and the modeling industry is opening up to dusky beauties but it’s still a long way to go to change the average person’s view….plus the fairness cream ads mushrooming everywhere hardly help the situation….it’s really unfortunate…
    having said that, u got to do what u got to do so here’s my little help…..the garnier light (fairness + dark spots prevention )moisturizing cream does work well….as for home remedies, try curd with lemon juice or besan with lemon juice….but be careful to not step out in the sun at least for half an hour after you have applied lemon juice masks…for a healthy complexion, loads of water, fresh fruits and veggies as well as nuts in your diet will help to a great extent….i hv also noticed that my skin glows when i regularly exercise….somehow the sweat has an amazing effect….along with sunscreen, try to use sunglasses every time you go out in the sun as our eye area is very delicate and tends to age a lot with regular harsh exposures to sun…
    lastly, do not let anyone put you down….we are all beautiful and don’t let anyone convince you otherwise…. :yes:

    1. Bhawana, I agree with you, the fairness creams are mushrooming; someone shd strike against those ridiculous advts and sue them, dusky human beings are still humans and have a right to live …look at President Obama …. you are right with the exercise bit, it somehow brings out all the impurities thru sweat and the skins glows to glory….I must start jogging, those were really the best days of my life … when I ran 3 kms every day and had a wonderful skin and feather lite body

  14. hey Gunjan, MIL Probs at the age of 23 ???? girl…you are working and you have a long bright future / career to make….anyways, these are some kitchen tips, which will help brighten your complexion, make a face pack of 2 tsp raw milk with 1 tsp besan, bit of chandan and a bit of haldi, apply it all over face, neck and hands, keep this for 15 mins and wash off, if you are not allergetic to honey, u can add that, if your skin is oily, you can add lemon, if its dry, avoid lemon and mix honey or olive oil….this pack will help in clearing skin, I used this to clear blemishes and it did work….

    You shd include exercise as a part of your regime, 10 mins joggin, 15 mins brisk walk, 20 mins yoga, whicher combination works for you, based on your time availability and interest….when I was regular with joggin, I never had break outs or skin probs, now that I stopped working out due to my heavy schedule, I fell prey for these skin probs…so exercise, will help

    Drink lots of water, coconut, green tea, lassi and milk….these work internally by hydrating your system and clearing it

    Try these and if your colour doesnt calm your MIL, take her to a psychologist…. :pan: that will surely help :spank: …have a great day ahead… :rose:

    1. “Try these and if your colour doesnt calm your MIL, take her to a psychologist…. that will surely help” :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

  15. I would first of all say, please love yourself what you are,so what if your mother in law says about your complexion, do not mind but do not be affected so much with other’s perspective.In the long run, if a person with her dedication carries out all her responsibilities and keeps everybody satisfied, matters a lot !! Now we can use some home remedies and all for lightening,.but my question is why discrimination on the ground of skin color,am really sad ,people’s mentality has not changed yet!Skin color may change, today you are fair, tomorrow you are not,with time all goes, but we remain the same, so why not to worry about something that would be with us and not on these petty issues thats not going to last long !!

    There is one line from Kishore da’s song
    Gore Rang Pe Na Itana Gumaan Kar
    Gora Rang Do Din Mein Dhal Jaayega
    Roop Mit Jaata Hai Ye Pyaar Ai Diladaar Nahi Mitata

  17. and reading everyones cooooments here baout gunjans future mil :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

  18. its sad but true….most of the girls in india have to face this issue….we are judged on the basis of our skin color rather than talent, studies or personality.

    As far as i think….skin color cant be lightened too much….all these solutions available from various companies will only even out the skin tone and remove tan.

    your best bet would be to go to a dermatologist. they have specialised treatments with kojic acid and vitamin c which can make a difference. and they also know in what concentrations should these be used. i would suggest, as you are staying in mumbai only, visit Dr. Jamuna Pai. she is very good…as told to me by a friend.

    rest some of the home remedies that can help in evening out the skin tone, remove tan, and give radiance are:
    1. use kumkumadi tailam.
    2. use mansoor daal scrub (mix ground mansoor dal with milk cream)
    3. use rice scrub (similar to above)
    4. the traditional besan + lime + haldi ubtan.
    using these consistently can give good results.

    all the best….stay confident….remember we all are beautiful the way we are :high5: :high5:

    hope ur MIL is showered with some wisdom…. :waiting: :waiting:

  19. I would just like to remind all the MIL bashers two things-

    1. If Gunjan’s husband-to-be is reading this, he would not be pleased to hear things about his mother. In essence, you guys are creating trouble for Gunjan.
    2. Don’t be so harsh about Gunjan’s would be MIL. It’s not her fault even. She was born in her age of prejudices and sometimes it’s hard to get rid of them, more so as you grow old. And to be frank, how many of you have mothers who are REALLY liberated?

    Given time, Gunjan might be able to win her mother in law, but for now, please do focus on the problem at hand. 🙂

    1. you are right. I am sorry if i said something wrong..jus wanted to help…Dont wanna create any problems for gunjan..

    2. I agree Sanjeev. well said. But its hard not to react 🙁 we are constantly trying to change the mindset everyday and become ‘modern’ in our thinking and not just modern in our dressing etc

      Gunjan – no offense meant to you. your husband or Mil..

  20. the best u can do is go to a dermatologist who will recommend some skin lightning treatments and peels which will really help u lightning ur skin , giving it a clean soft look and glow as well. tho’ it will be a l’il expensive bu worth it.

  21. i knw how it feels even though my MIL has nt created ne such problems wid me but i knw the perception on the ppl in general in our society n i oh so agree wid sanjeev.u knw wat u can do is visit a dermo..they ve these chemical peels which are also called AHA peels wherein they remove the top layer of d skin wid chemical peel and wat u get is a glowing,radiant and fairer skin.n thn they also gve u few ointments 2 maintain tht complexion.ths procedure may cost u arund 700-1500 per sitting depending on the dermo u go 2.i get these peels done n wat my dermo says is tht these r lke normal facials n can be dne every 2-3 weeks but just make sure tht u go 2 a gud dermo who is recommended by smeone u knw otherwise ths treatment can also burn ur skin..all d best

  22. i am a dusky girl , or what you say wheatish , and i have a really fair mother in law, luckily she doesnt create problems for me. but yes she does assume that only fair people are beautiful and that her son is married to some ugly duckling. i have learnt to let things be. but i do understand your situation.

    A couple of things that i would recommend would be

    Home made bleach
    Use juice of a potato on your skin as often as you can. Grate half a potato , squeeze the juice out and apply it on your skin. Wash off with warm water.
    A lot of times it is the facial hair that further darkens your skin.

    You can use cucumber juice , taken out in a similar way.

    Buttermilk is said to work wonders for tan removal. Leave half a cup of buttermilk out in the morning. When you are back from work, apply this soured buttermilk , leave till it is dry and wash it off.

    Soak almonds overnight in water. Make a paste using buttermilk and use this to scrub your face and neck.

    I hope these home remedies help.

  23. I broke off my 6 yr relationship coz I hv become dark in these yrs. And he doesnt love me anymore for this reason. 1) I have become dark, 2) I have become fat. :((((

    1. if he doesnt like you for these reasons…then he doesnt deserve you…love doesnt depend on skin color and size.

      1. Nandini I want to get rid of my pigmentation. Can u plz suggest me good derma in Mumbai? I know Jamuna Pai, shez a reputed Derma… bt dont know how much she charges for her chemical peel services. Plz rply/help. 😐

        1. Manali, i personally have no experience of going to any derma..my friend had gone to Dr. Jamuna Pai…she had a problem with oily skin and wanted to control the oil…she didnt get any peel or anything…jus some medicine and cream..she is very happy with the results.

          you can also try kaya…they give u a free consultation where they check ur skin and recommend the treatments and their costs..then its upto you whether u want to take them up or not.

          prices are usually 1000-1500 rs. per sitting..and i think the number of sittings vary…am not too sure..

          but my suggestion is that go for these peels only if you have really bad pigmentation…..because in some cases they can have bad effects also. so if its not very bad…jus use topical ceams given by a derma or use home remedies..

          all the best sweetie :puchhi:

        2. theres a good derma in Irla, i used to go to him for my acne prob. decades back.let me scratch my head and recollect his name!

  24. Hey, this wont help change the color you were born with, but will lighten tanned skin…
    Mix almonds, yogurt and oats together and apply as a pack.
    It works!
    And… every one has their own idea of what’s beautiful, and while you can’t control other people’s feelings and ideas, you can control how you feel about yourself 🙂 Hope this doesn’t bring you down…good luck!

  25. Hi Gujan
    this is not to disrespect your Mother in law to be or your wishes in any way. i would suggest you talk to her about this and tel her that its not possible for you to do anything to change your skin colour. living in todays age there are things we just cant do without like shampoos and moisturiser etc etc but why do you want to unnecessarily add one more toxic chemical cocktail in your beauty regime. we all know and yet we choose to ignore the known and proven side effects of the chemicals present in every single skin care product. think of what will this unnecessary addition do to not just your skin but also your overall health in the long run. women in their twenties are being diagnosed with all kinds of diseases and it is a reason to be worried.
    now about your mother in law, would you let someone else make this decision for you?the decision of what to put on your skin? the decision that means that you accept that you are not good enough to be her daughter in law because of your skin colour? is your fiance aware of this situation? does he have a say in this? think about what else will your mil ask you to give up/alter/change about you later in life, if right now she can ask you to do this knowing that you will because she said so.
    id suggest you seriously tel her that its not a decision she can make for you.
    i wish you all the happiness in the world
    best of luck.

  26. i would want to give ur MIL a run for her money, its not you who has dark skin, its her who has a dark heart.
    be proud of what u are and what u have, dont let anything dampen ur self confidence and belief in the lovely relationship u share with ur husband.

    lots of strength to u!
    :heart:

  27. hey DNT GO 2 KAYA!! m warning u.i had gne there longggg tme bak n their treatment did absolutely nothing 4 me..i was so pissed wid them 4 fooling me that i threathened them tht i ll sue thm if i dnt get my money bak..n its nt just me, i ve heard frm a lotta ppl how their treatments do nothing at all..

  28. hey gunjan..use besan nd mil as a facewash in mrng..it halps..by d way m bac kafter a lng time..nd m luvng d new smileys here..wanna use dem all…. 😉 :whistle: :waiting: :waaa: :tongue: :yikes: :yuck: :thumbsup: :teeth :teddy: :stars: :specs: :shocked: :scream: :pompom: :pigtail: :lol2: :love: :makeup: :manicure: :methinks: :mirror: :nababana: :nono: :nonono: :jog: :jiggy1: :jalwa: :huh: :drool: :dumb: 😥 :clap: :announce: :angel: 😀 :bash: :balle: :chewnails :daayan: dese anna chinamma smileys r jst sooooo sweet… :preen: :teddy: :chewnails :high5: :pan: ..nd rati nd sanjeev :teddy: :teddy: fr sch a wnderful wrk…

  29. Hi

    I would recommend you to get a glycolic peel followed by demelan/kojic/glyco 6/melaglow cream you can use any of them they dont have any sideeffects since they contain natuaral ingrediants like kojic acid , glycolic acid , arbutin, licorice extract etc. they are safe all u have to o is do lots of care of your skin wera sunscreen when u heading out during day time with spf 30 and follow a good regime everyday to look beautiful, I am also dusky but what I feel is being dusky is not the concern , how u care for your skin is the main thing, you see if your skin is flawless and radiant and glowing then i can bet you will rock in it. So always say yes to skin care and do not skip the routine 🙂 stay beautiful
