How To Avoid Wedding Makeup Disasters

Your wedding day is the most special day of your life. For better or for worse, cynics might add, but heck, why would you even have a wedding day unless you actually wanted it to be the most special day of your life and on your happiest day, nothing can be ALLOWED to go wrong, especially your makeup. Here is your full-of-common-sense guide on how to avoid makeup disasters on a wedding day (especially if its yours). Here’s hoping you won’t be the blushing bride because of too much blush!

• Buy Your Outfit Way Before Your Makeup, Jewelry, and Shoes:

Everything has to be coordinated, which is why you have to select your wedding dress way before anything else. Even if you are tempted to go over to the makeup counter and splurge just a tiny bit on that fabulous new shade of lipstick, you just have to have, save on your makeup budget. Be practical and buy your dress and shoes first.

• Choose the Right Foundation:

  

Seriously hunt for the right foundation. Brides are often women who don’t have the time or the will to apply foundation. However, as a bride, you cannot go without it. Therefore, a mistake that brides often make is buying the wrong shade of foundation, especially Indian brides who mainly have a wheatish complexion think that looking like a vampire is probably the point to a foundation, which is why they always end up with shades much lighter. However, tuck that fairness myth safely away in the dustbin where it belongs. Gorgeous skin does not mean having one that makes you look like Morticia Addams. It is about a healthy glow, an even skin-tone and no blemishes. Therefore, look for the foundation that is closest to your skin tone. See that it offers superior coverage. Buy a liquid foundation rather than a powder one as this is winter. Always get it tested on your jawline and even a considerable part of your face upwards from there. The store is likely to have tube lights, so its best to go foundation hunting during the day. Ask for a mirror, go out of the store, study your jawline closely in the day light and then see whether it suits you.

• Cleansing, Toning, and Moisturizing:

  

Have a proper skin care routine from at least a month before. This is for all you lazy gals out there who never quite take care of themselves. CTM – cleanse, tone, moisturize twice everyday. Exfoliate and apply face pack about once a week. Go for a facial before the wedding (its YOUR wedding after all) and be sure to CTM just before you apply your makeup.

• Face Primer and Eye Primer:

  

Purchase a face primer and an eye primer if possible. A lot of people think that primers are unnecessary, but priming ensures that your makeup stays on longer without having to apply and re-apply too much. You cannot let your makeup fade out on your wedding day. Also, primers protect your skin.

• Blush it Up:

Buy a peach blush if you are wheatish to dusky and a pink one if you have a lighter complexion. The Maybelline blush is both affordable and good, so no need to splurge on a more expensive one.

• Coordinate Lipstick and Eyeshadow:

  

Buy your eyeshadow and lipstick coordinated with your outfit. Indian weddings tend to celebrate excess in everything, but it is high time to break away from that. Your wedding outfit is bound to be “heavy,” therefore you have to play it light and subtle with your make up. If you are going heavy on your eye makeup (especially if you have big, beautiful eyes), go light on the lipstick and vice-versa. Buy your shades accordingly.

• Attractive Eye Makeup:

For eye makeup, shimmery eye-liner is a great idea. Ditch that black liner and kajal. It is time to go bridal with a bang. Lakme has a great line of colorful shimmery liners, even a transparent one to go with any color you want. For your lower waterline, go for NYX eye pencils. NYX also has a white pencil that is of great use. A lot of make-up artists tend to fatten the eyeliner and apply a thick line of kohl. That looks great of rock chicks, but they also make the eyes look small. Everyone loves big eyes. This is where a white pencil comes handy. They just make your eye pop! Also, never forget to get some mascara magic on. Use colored mascaras only if it co-ordinates with your eye shadow. Otherwise, use black or transparent mascara. Definitely, use a water-resistant one. Curl your lashes with a curler. Apply at least two coats and brush out clumps. Do not use falsies. This is your wedding, not a fashion show. Use a eyebrow pencil or some brown eye shadow to fill out the eyebrow. Use an eyebrow comb to sharply define your eyebrows.

• Go For Red or Pink Lipstick:

For lipstick, use either a red or a pink. Stay away from browns, nudes and maroons and any other dark colors. Use red only if you want it to be the focal point by keeping the eyes and the outfit lighter. The best bet is to go with a pink that suits you. Also, do not go for a gloss, or a lipstick that has too glossy a finish. Search for something less glossy, but not matte, deeply pigmented and very smooth. Long-lasting is of course heavily desirable in this case, but do not depend on it even if it claims to. Always have your lipstick in your clutch purse. Also, you ABSOLUTELY must use a lip liner. I cannot count the number of brides I have seen with horrid bleeding lipstick lips. Co-ordinate the lip liner with the lipstick. Buy it a shade lighter so that the line doesn’t show.

• Highlighter and Bronzer:

Get a highlighter and a bronzer only if you have faith in your makeup artist (or yourself). All brides get their makeup done by someone else, preferably a professional. However, if you have been practicing your makeup skills enough, you might want to do it on your own. However, contouring and other makeup subtleties are hard to  master and even professionals often aren’t able to do it perfectly. Therefore avoid this step unless you are absolutely sure of it. You have your regular makeup covered anyway.

10.  Choose the Correct Makeup Accessories:

Buy the most functional brushes, sponges, q-tips, cotton balls, makeup swipes. An artist cannot work without his tools- his brushes and his hands. Therefore, do not invest on an expensive lipstick and forget all about brushes. Half of the art of doing your own makeup lies in your tools. Buy a foundation brush and a sponge. Use the first for applying and second for blending. Definitely use a blush brush. Use an eye brow comb. Buy an eyelash curler and always have your disaster saviors like q-tips and cotton balls handy. The MAC brushes are the best, but you can also buy the very affordable Vega and Faces brushes. Read reviews on www.makeupandbeauty.com to know which ones to buy.

• Get a manicure and pedicure:

We never quite take care of our hands and toes as we should. However, manicures and pedicures pamper and beautify. Definitely buy TWO nail polishes (using the same color on fingernails and toes is not a good idea).

• Be Sure to Smile and Be Happy:

Don’t be nervous! Even if things don’t go according to your plan for the wedding day, what is most important is that you are getting married to who you love. Nothing makes a bride more beautiful than the glow of happiness on her face!

P.S. Almost forgot. Make sure ALL your makeup is WATER-RESISTANT!

MAC Liquidlast Liner in Point Black

Hi Friends, I am so happy happy these days as there are more and more MAC products entering my kit. I have nice big eyes and I am always on the look out for best kohls and eyeliners. These are a must-have in any girl’s kit. Thanks to IMBB, I am going mad after MAC these days and have stopped looking at other options outside.  Today, I am reviewing my favourite product which is called the Liquidlast liner from MAC.  The shade that I bought is called Point Black.  It is the blackest of black, I really mean it.

I have bought so many black eyeliners that look really black when applied, but looks a shade lighter after it dries, but this one is amazing. I bought this when I went makeup shopping before my wedding. I wanted to have a full MAC makeup kit, but ended up buying only the essentials because of the budget. I was on the lookout for a waterproof black eyeliner. The MUA showed me this. I was initially skeptical about the waterproof thing and kept asking her again and again if it was really waterproof as there are many brands that have this tag, but they are actually not. The MUA told me that it was the best she was giving me and she applied it on me.  She created a thick winged look and I really loved the color and texture so much.  It dried within a few seconds and so, I went ahead and bought it.

About MAC Liquidlast Liner in Point Black:
A rich colour liquid eye liner that combines long-lasting wear with a non-smudge, non-flake precision line. Goes on effortlessly. Applies with its own brush to draw a perfectly defined line. Available in a wide range of classic and trend shades.

Packaging:

The packaging reminds me of the Lakme Nine to Five intense shine eyeliner.  The brush is amazing, very pointed and neat. I shake the bottle and then use just one stroke to get a thick black line.

Price:

I do not remember the price exactly.  I think I bought it for approximately Rs. 1100.

Pros of MAC Liquidlast Liner in Point Black:

• Intense black.
• Waterproof.
• Smudge-proof.
• Does not cause irritation to the eyes.
• Just one stroke is enough, so it lasts many months.

Cons of MAC Liquidlast Liner in Point Black:

• It is a little difficult to remove as it is waterproof.  I tried removing it with my Revlon eye and lip makeup remover (already reviewed here), but it was still difficult.  However, it did not irritate my eyes during the removal.
• Price is a bit on the higher side.

The MUA suggested that MAC makeup remover is the best for such liners, but I was not ready to spend so much on a remover, now, I realize its worth.

My Verdict:

This is the best eyeliner I have ever owned, but I only use it for parties where I need it for a long time.

My Rating:
4.5/5, and -0.5 just for the high price factor.

Would I Recommend:
Definitely.

Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow Rose Beach 537

My first ever eyeshadow! All you lovely ladies tempted me to use the eyeshadow and I mustered up some courage to purchase Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow Rose Beach 537. I wore eye shadow for the first time in my life last week to my cousin’s wedding.

What Lotus Herbals claims about Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow:

Velvety smooth formula that blends effortlessly, with no signs of streaking, fading or creasing.  Its dawn-to-dusk lasting capacity helps protect eyes with botanical extracts of rose petals, aloe vera and chamomile.

Price:

Rs. 349.

My Experience with Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow:

Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow comes in a compact box. A sponge applicator and a very small blending brush are included along with the eyeshadows. The lid of the box has a mirror. There is a thin transparent lid that covers the eyeshadow colors.

The brush is of no use to blend the color. The bristles start to fall off when you overuse to apply and blend the color.

The product I am showcasing here is of Rose Beach version. There are three-color eye shadows included. A pretty pink, golden brown and white shimmers. The color payoff is not too pigmented, but for a beginner, the colors are perfect. The colors do not streak on eyelids. They are like fine powder and stays on for pretty long (more than 4 hours).

However, it does not come off with just face wash. It requires remover/oil to be cleansed off.

Pros of Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow:

• Compact box packaging.
• 3 color shades – perfect for a beginner.
• Decent pigmentation.
• No streaking or creasing.
• Stays on pretty long without fading.
• Sponge applicator and blending brush included.
• Mirror included in the box.

Cons of Lotus Herbals Maxlid Botanical Eyeshadow:

• Very poor quality blending brush (cannot expect much though).
• Difficult to remove.
• Will not suit ladies who need dark pigmented color.

Rating:

4/5 (A beginner’s rating).

Will I Buy Again?

No. I will buy eyeshadows from some other brand once I am confident enough with eye makeup.

MAC Crushed Metallic Pigment Stack Photos, Swatches

MAC has launched two crushed metallic pigments stacks in the Surf Baby Collection – Summer Stash and Surf the Ocean. There are 4 colors in each stack. I have reviewed the Summer Stack HERE

 Summer Stash :

The 4 colors are : 

A deep chocolaty brown with bronze metallic finish to it. This can be patted all over the lid for sexy smokey eyes.

A high shine metallic finish purple.

The lighter shade comes out as silvery champagne with very high metallic finish. Looks beautiful as a inner corner highlighter. Totally makes your eyes look awake.

A light coppery color with high silver frost.

Swatches : 

Surf The Ocean

The 4 colors are :

A frosty silvery finish pistachio green.

A high shine metallic silver grey.

A dark metallic blackish blue.

A true yellow gold color. It almost looks like a melted gold in the pot. :D 

Swatches :

I personally feel these are best for professional makeup artists. There is a lot of product in each container. For personal use I find Summer stash more wearable. The copper and champagne pigments look beautiful on the inner corners.

A very good product mostly for parties and evening outs but I don’t see much use of it on a day to day basis.

My Experience with Lancome Bi Facil Eye Makeup Remover

When I used it for the first time it went straight inside by eye and I close my eye shut tightly thinking it would sting. But to my surprise, It didn’t sting a bit rather it felt so calming and soothing in the eye. It’s a magical eye makeup remover.

• It removes every single trace of makeup – eyeshadows, water-poof mascaras, eye kohl from the water line, liquid liners, gel liners and even the long stay lipsticks.
• It removes makeup without any pressure. Just gently move the cotton swab around your eye and your makeup would come off.
• It never ever stings. In fact, I rather feel it is soothing to eyes. Good for sensitive eyes as well.
• A little goes a long way. You really don’t have to use a lot for each eye. It’s super effective.
• It leaves eye area quite soft and nourished.
• It leaves a little oily film (not greasy- gross kinds though) behind but just dab your eyes with a tissue and your eyes would be super clean.

I did this 4 step pictures to show how effectively it works.

Step 1 : Full eye makeup with black eyeshadow, shimmers, eyelash primer, black liquid liner and a waterproof mascara (Phew! )

Step 2: Shake the bottle and pour some Lancome Bi Facial on a cotton swab. Dab the cotton swab on your eye lid . Gently move the the cotton swab both on lid and lashes. You would barely have to put any pressure in removing the makeup.

Step 3 : Most of the makeup is removed except some black eyeliner on the upper lid and some khol on the the waterline.

Step 4 : Every single trace of makeup is removed. Even my lashes are clean. :D Do notice a little oily film is also left around the eye. The point to be noted is that there is absolutely no redness in my eye, otherwise my eyes get irritated easily.

PS : You can also take this makeup remover on a Q tip and gently remove the makeup on your waterline. It NEVER stings. Don’t want to disgust you but just look at the amount of makeup removed with just one cotton swab.

Highly recommend this.

What the company claims:
Define you eyes with luxurious and dramatic Revlon Magic Eyeliner. Its silky smooth texture glides on easily adding drama and definition to your eyes. The rich color stays on all day and won’t smear, smudge or fade.

Cost: Rs 390
Quantity: 1.2g

My experience:

I like the name “smokey black” :). It’s a greyish black shade and I wear it quite often for a natural look. It’s a good shade to use when you are wearing a bright lip color and don’t want to draw too much attention to your eyes.

It doesn’t live up to its claims of being long lasting and smudge proof though.

You’ll have to set it with powder to prevent it from smudging, but even if you don’t, it won’t leave you with raccoon eyes because the color itself is not too dark. I love that about this pencil. All I need is a touch up during lunchtime to have some color on me eyes and I don’t mind the soft smudged look at the end of the day either. Also, I forgot to add, it doesn’t sting the eyes at all (I wear contact lenses), so you can apply it on the waterline without any problems.
It’s a little costly but it’ll last long enough to make it worth the money.

Here’s how it looks on the eyes (hope this time the liner is visible!)

It’s on my lower waterline and lash line.

Pros:

• Sturdy packaging, can be carried around in the purse
• Creamy in consistency
• Doesn’t sting the eyes and suitable for lens wearers as well
• Buildable eye color
• The pencil lasts long (2 yrs in my case)

Cons:
• Expensive
• Not smudge proof
• Sharpening the pencil causes product wastage
• You need 2-3 swipes for the color to show well on the eyes

Will I repurchase: sure! But this one’s gonna last me long enough.
