ELF Brightening Eye Liner Plum, Midnight, Ash and Teal

Remember a very kind lady from IMBB offered to bring me some US makeup and needless to say I was very greedy and hoarded like there is no tomorrow? If yes, then these, ELF products are part of that major haul and I had been trying out these liners and finally I remembered that I need to review them before they are lost in the history in some corner of my cupboard

My opinion about these liners is very very mixed I must say.  I really like a couple of them whereas others are really worth a dollar, if you have read my ELF liner post on shimmer liners, these are different, but still the same $1 essential series from ELF which is really so much fun to try.

The colors here are all matte except the teal one which is surprisingly a shimmer one.  The shimmer is very mild and not glittery and the remaining ones are all absolutely matte. I have no idea why they are called brightening eyeliners.  These come nicely packed and come with a sharpener which is the best part of these pencils sharpener, with each one of them, which works like a dream.

The shades that are on offer are:

• Coffee.
• Black.
• Gilded.
• Exotic Green.
• Electric Purple.
• Teal.
• Ash.
• Midnight.
• Plum.

Plum:

The plum doesn’t appear to be very plum to me and is the hardest of the lot.  It is matte and not very creamy, shows up a little on the hand swatch and very less on the lid. The color fades on me very soon and no question of smudging as it fades into nothing-ness even before it would smudge and rub on my upper lids. The plum could have been a real pretty plum, but is more like brown-plum for me, not so creamy but still glides on well, but for Indian skin tones, it doesn’t show up much.

Ash:

The Ash is my favourite since a long time. I love grey eye pencils for the eyes and this one is creamy, glides on well and shows up as a smokey eyeshadow if you fill up the lids with this. Its matte for me and looks very deep on Indian black brown eyes.  It is a nice pencil but very mild and smudges and fades very soon, even touches the upper lids and makes a mess.  Setting it with powder may not help much, but you can use the pencil itself as a base to a dark grey shadow.

Midnight:

The midnight is most creamy and deep color of this lot.  The color is really a gorgeous blue-black and comes up almost black for me.  It is very pigmented and deep.  If set with shadow, it may last longer than the others. Shows up very well and creamy in texture, my most favourite here.

Teal:

The Teal is more of a shimmer liner and is very very creamy to the point that it is crumbly when you glide it.  There is mild shimmer in it and is not matte like the others here.  The color is a very pretty aqua blue and I love this one as eyeshadow or base and a pencil as well.  It is very pigmented and smooth in texture.

Last Word on ELF Brightening Eye Liner Plum, Midnight, Ash and Teal:

I do not use them on waterline as I do not want to take a chance, but these are pretty colors with little staying power.  I do recommend Midnight and Teal to you girls and for a dollar, these are really a steal.  You can avoid the Plum though and Coffee too.  For the lighter pigmented ones, use them as a base to shadows themselves if you are unhappy as a pencil. I did not have gliding or smoothness problems with these.  The sharpener that comes with these is the best sharpener I have amongst my Avon, Oriflame, Lakme, and Faces ones.  It works very well with all my eye pencils, so I am very happy I had to pay a dollar for the pencil which comes with a sharpener each

My Take on Maybelline Vivid and Smooth Liners Olive and Metallic Silver:

I love pencil liners for their ease of application. I have them in most of the colours and I use them almost every day. Olive and Metallic Silver from Maybelline are my latest purchases as I was looking for these particulars shades. Well, right, I got these primarily for their shades, but gladly they also perform/work well.

The liners are creamy, soft in texture and glide easily on the eyelids without any effort/tugging. Their pigmentation, I wouldn’t say is intense/great, but these can be built upon by swiping the liners 2-3 times.

I find their staying power decent (about 4-5 hours without fading) and these don’t smudge. However, these are not waterline safe (in my opinion), so you should avoid them there and just use these as eyeliners.

I tried these all over the lid too, but these were a little creamy, creased and transferred on the area above the lid crease. I guess these are not for my oily eyelids to be used as an eyeshadow, but as eye liners, these are great.

Both the shades are very pretty and wearable. Olive is a shimmery green (I would call it between khaki and henna green) with golden/copper-coloured shimmer particles in it. Its a gorgeous shade for evening wear/party wear makeup, but I doubt I will wear this in routine.

Metallic Silver is dark grey with specks of fine silver shimmer. I won’t call this a full-on/proper silver/shimmery eyeliner as the shade name suggests. This is my favourite out of the two and I am wearing this quite often these days.

Overall, these eyeliners/pencils are good value for money and I would definitely recommend these.

(Feel like saying what an idea sir jee :hihi: )

See the blunt tip….Now what exactly does the” twist it till you get the desired point” mean anyway when the pencil can only be twisted up and not down!!! :waiting:

My Experience

I don’t get the name only. Pencil perfect I can understand. What is this with the “self advancing” thing. I mean it’s not going to do something miraculous on its own. I really don’t know why companies come with such fancy names. (Wait!!! I know. To fool people obviously :-/ )

Well this is a regular dark brown/ coffee colored liner. The formula is really creamy and smooth. I haven’t come across a liner that goes this smoothly on the lid. The color pay off is very okay okay type. You have to swipe it 4/5 times to get the actual color on the lids. On the pack it says smudge proof, which is partly true and partly false. Let me explain. It gets smudged within an hour of application. I was so mad for this thing. Like it costs 550 bucks and can’t even do what’s the basic need or requirement from a liner. So I started applying it only on my waterline as a kajal. It would stay there for some time and then just disappear. One fine day I was just curious that how can they write its smudge proof on the pack if it smudges like hell in an hour. So what I did was swatched it on my hand, smudged it with my finger. One swipe of my finger and it was gone. Next I swatched it again on my hand.set it with some loose powder (I just used my nivea powder) and you won’t believe it just would not budge. It stayed like that even when I wet my hand and tried to smudge it again. I found it on my hand as it is in the morning. so much for being smudge proof.
Let me summarize my experience in what I liked and what I did not like in this Self advancing eyeliner.

Good Points:

1. Glides like a dream.
2. Very Creamy. You can do your eye in one single go.
3. A bit tricky but it is smudge proof alright. 4. Imparts a soft look to the eyes unlike the other liners I’ve tried till date.
5. Pigmentation is okay but is quite buildable.
6. Coverage is really good.
7.Does not irritate the water line. So can be used as a brown Kajal.

Not so good points:

1. Usually I don’t set my eyes with loose powder after I line them. Never felt the need to do it. But with this you have to remember this.
2. Sharpening it is impossible. And the blunt tip is not very helpful when you want a thin line.
3. The pencil can only be twisted up. So if by mistake you end up having a long lid out of the casing it’s going to be really difficult to safely handle it without braking.
4. Price can be a problem for some with many other options available at a much lesser price.

My rating: 3 out of 5

Final word: hmmm. It’s a good liner. But I am not going to get it again. I would rather go for faces or colorbar ones.

Lakme Glide on Eye Colour – Metallic Black

Recently, I started a hunt for good eye liners in the form of pencils and markers. I started with Maybelline Vivid Smooth pencils. I had a very good experience and Lotus Herbal’s Eye Contour definer, it doesn’t go well with my eyes. Then, I narrowed down my search to Lakme Glide on Eye Colours. Today, I am going to review about Lakme Glide on Eye Colours.

Lakme have launched glide on colors in 7 seven shades:

• Smoky Green.
• Iridescent Blue.
• Peacock Green.
• Metallic Black.
• Aqua Green.
• Warm Copper.
• Plush Purple.

I bought Lakme glide on eye color – Metallic Black, since I love black colour a lot, but later, I came to know after using the pencil that metallic black is not black, but it is grey and silver combination type of shade.

Claims:

Okay, let’s look about the company claims. Lakme glide on eye colours is full of crushed gemstones sprinkled with the brilliance of precious metals, for eyes that reflect the stars.

Price:

Rs. 275/-.

Net Weight:

1.2 grams.

Shelf Life:

30 months. It comes with a sealed cover and a cap.

My Experience with the Lakme Glide on Eye Colours:

The pencil outlook has a common look when compared with Maybelline Vivid smooth pencils, but when it is used, we can get the appealing look. It glides like butter. It is a smudge-proof pencil. It stays in my eyes for 8 -10 hours without getting cornered in my eyes.
Some eye pencils tend to get cornered in our eyes after a long duration, but Lakme doesn’t disappoint me in this issue, since this is the very important point for me. Girls like me working in shifts already have dark circle issues; after using these pencils, it should not make them to look worse.

I am having a wheatish skin tone, so whenever I try to apply Lakme Glide on Eye Color in my upper eye, it is not so visible because of the lighter shade, I need to overdo it to get a good eye makeup. I always prefer to use it in my water line only.

Waterproof test pictures:

Lakme Glide on Eye Color doesn’t have too much of glittering effect as mentioned by the Lakme. In all my pictures because of flash, it is glittering too much.

Sometimes, I use Lakme glide on eye color over my liquid eyeliner .You can see the picture below.

Likes about Lakme Glide On Eye Colour:

• Pencil is so smooth within one swatch, I can get the entire eye makeup done.
• Wastage is low, whenever it is sharpened, its lead is not breaking into bits.
• It glides well in the waterline without smudging and it is waterproof too.
• It can also be used for smokey eye makeup.
• Price is quite low when compared with other glittering eye pencils. It is totally worth the money.

Dislikes about Lakme Glide On Eye Colour:

• Color is in somewhat lighter shade, so it is not visible on darker skin tones.
• Metallic black doesn’t seems to be dark, it looks like silver-grey shade.

Final Verdict:

This pencil is ideal for waterline and for smokey eye makeup.

Will I Buy It Again?

No, I will try some other shades in Lakme Glide on Colors and a darker shade this time.

Jaded Mint : It’s a jade green metallic finish eyeliner.

Electric Violet : It’s a violet blue shade.

Grey Matter : Gunmetal grey with a hint of blue in it.It has a silvery sheen to it.

Earth line : Gorgeous rich brown

Gypsy Green : Khaki green with gold sheen. It is much richer than the Henna gold eye liner that lakme offers in its other eye liner range.

Blue Cosmos : It’s metallic ocean blue color.

The 7th shade is jet black called Blacklast

Swatches :

These are twist up eye liners. Very smooth and I loved the shades they have come up with. None of the shades have OTT shimmer. They just have metallic finish so these can be easily worn both during the day and evening.

The price is a bit on the higher side but the previous 9-5 eye liners range was quite impressive. I am all game for these.

Kajal is one and probably the only beauty product that I can’t do without. I had my ‘eyes’ on ‘Oriflame Beauty Eye Intensity Pencil ’ for a long time and when I saw this product on saIe, I obviously decided to try them out!

What the product claims: A creamy smooth sharpenable pencil for lining, defining, colouring and contouring eyes. With advanced silicone technology for exceptional glidability and blend. 7 hour smudge-proof once set. 1g

Price: Rs 239/- (MRP) I got them @ Rs 127/- (Membership Discount + Sale)
Shades Available: Intense Black, Chestnut Brown, Navy Blue, Precious Green, Charcoal Grey, Silver Prune

I had a tough time zeroing upon the shades but finally got myself the black, brown, green and the purple one!

Intense Black: It is one of the darkest eye pencil I’ve ever used. It is as dark as our traditional kajal. This one has surely replaced my routine Kajal.

Chestnut Brown: I love this shade! It is just perfect for everyday look. Very subtle and looks natural. Use this to avoid the harshness of a black liner.

Precious Green: I was a bit apprehensive about getting this shade and I wasn’t too sure if I’d be able to carry it off but I’m glad I got this one. It is a bit bluish green colour (greener than the picture) – very rich. Girls with brown eyes must be very careful while using green on eyes as some shades of green tend to bring out the yellowish overtones of brown eyes(some may even want that to make the eyes look ‘goldenish’). As this is bluish green, we don’t need to worry about that.

Sometimes I use it along with my brown/black liner to get a hint of colour.

Silver Prune: This shade is pure gorgeousness! I think purple looks great on brown eyes and every Indian girl must have a purple liner in her makeup bag.

What I like about Oriflame Beauty Eye Intensity Pencil’:

• Shades Available: What makes these eye pencils so irresistible is the selection of shades. It is beautiful, perfect for everyday use.
• Finish: The eye pencil is matte(satiny) with no glitter or shine. One thing I hate about the colorful eyeliners from other brands in the same price bracket is that they contain a lot of glitter (Lakme, Maybelline). By the end of an hour or two the glitter finds its way to my nose somehow!
• The matte finish makes it look professional: perfect for office and college wear.
• Texture: It is extremely smooth and creamy. It doesn’t tug at my eyelids.
• Long Stay: It stays put for a decent amount of time(5+ hrs) but it does smudge a bit, especially in a humid weather condition.
• Colour Payoff : It varies. While the black one is really really dark and intense black, the purple one is a bit lighter than expected. But overall the colour payoff is great
• Packaging: The end of the pencils is coloured which makes it very easy to locate in a crowded makeup box.
• The price: Without sale, I’d still get it at around Rs 191/-( 25% membership discount). Even at this price, it’d be a steal.

What I don’t like about Oriflame Beauty Eye Intensity Pencil’:

• As these pencils are extremely creamy, sharpening them is a difficult task. One has to have a good sharpener.
• It gets used up pretty fast.
• They are a bit difficult to remove. I have to wash my face twice/thrice to remove it completely.

Will I buy them again? Oh yes, Most definitely!!

A few days back here on IMBB I saw A durga Puja Haul on IMBB. There I saw a beauty which is Elle 18 eye pencil.It is from Elle 18 Color Bombs Range. It caught my eyes and obsessed as I am now a days with eye pencils it did not fail to attract me. A few days ago I went out for a mini haul and came out with three of these pencils. I’ll show you the haul later(it was also based on IMBB ravings). I got these pencils in silver(whitish), moss green and purple. I also wanted the blue one but that was out of stock then and surely I’m going to get hold of it when I go out shopping again. Let me show you the pencils.

The three obsessions: (from left)silver spark, purple pataka, green grenade

The pencils are quite fat and big like the lakme kajals (satin or the regular one). And I guess they will last for ages until I get bored and want to do away with them. I also think the concept might be like NYX jumbo pencils which as from the review here on IMBB and from youtube hear are super creamy and super creasy and can be used even as a shader pencil.iIthink that colored eye-pencils are great especially if you stay out a lot and don’t have the time or scope enough to do ypur make-up with a relaxed mood. For me eye-pencils serve multipurpose. I use them as liner or as eyeshadows like every one. But they are specially helpful when I’m going somewhere straight after my class gets over. I can just pick out my little mirror and jazz up in no time at all.

Elle 18 Green Grenade

This is going to be a very short review. So I’ll come to the pros and the cons directly.

The Pros of Elle 18 Eye Sparklers

1. You guessed it. Comes dirt cheap for such a quantity.
2. Pigmentation is quite good.
3. Very very creamy but can be blended in nicely.
4. It acts as a good eye-shadow base provided you blend it properly.
5. Can be used as shader pencils but you have to blend it well to achieve that subtle look.
6. The white one stayed on my waterline without smudging for quite sometime.

The Cons of Elle 18 Eye Sparklers

1. They might sting your eyes. The purple one stung like hell when I tried on the waterline. But the silver one never stung me. To be sure of it I used it more than once or twice with the same result. No stinging with the silver one but bad with the purple one.
2. The super-creamy texture make them bad as eye shadows as they crease crease and crease horribly. I find it strange that they do good on the waterline.
3. Because of the texture cant be layered for a deeper kind of look. So, if you intend to use them as eye shadows you can only create subtle look. Which for me is not bad keeping in mind what I’m paying.

Shall I repurchase Elle 18 Eye Sparklers? I don’t know because I get bored of something if I use it for a long time and I know it will be years before I finish them. But I will look for the blue shader of course.

NYX Jumbo Eye pencil in “Milk”

Has there been anyone around who has *not* raved about the NYX Jumbo eye pencils? It’s been getting all the attention and hype around. The most raved about is the one shade called Milk. They say NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil Milk is supposed to be a great base, makes eye shadows pop and colours appear vibrant. Does it really? Let’s see.

What does NYX claim?

• Jumbo pencils could be used for lining as well as shadows.Containing mineral oils and powders, the pencils does not dry out your eyes and applies smoothly without pulling or tugging.

Ingredients: Ceresin Wax, Candelilla Wax, Bees Wax, Squalane, Hydrogenated Styrene, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Mineral Oils, Polyisobutene, Butylated Hydroxy Anisole, Propyl Paraben, Mica, Talc, C.I.77499, Pearl Powder.

What I think about NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil?

Seriously jumbo in size for an eye pencil, this one is really creamy and easy to use. The packaging is pretty cute and comes in a whole bunch of vibrant colours. Milk was the most hyped of the lot so, I decided I should do a review of that and check if it’s worth the hype. Here’s what I think of “MILK”.

Milk, as the name suggests is a shade of creamy white. No shimmer or glitter. The tip of the pencil is not pointed, even when new so it’s better for thicker lines that require smudging. Here are some uses that I see.

• Using it as an eye shadow making sure we blend in really really well. It blends like a dream, so that’s not a problem

NYX Milk

• Using it as an eye shadow base to make eye shadows pop. Well, this shade (milk) is supposed to be really versatile in working as an eye shadow base, but I am not quite sure of that. First, it creases quite as much to be used as a base. Secondly, sometimes I feel it makes eye shadows appear too bright. For instance, if you use this as a base for a blue shadow like MAC’s electric eel, the result is a totally bright, clowny shade of blue. At least as far as Indian skin tones are concerned, I am not sure if “milk” is so versatile as an eye shadow base since it’s “too white” and can create a ghastly look for certain eye shadows. If you are extremely fair, it might work as a great base. Also, the end result after blending is not a transparent one, so the shade of the eye shadow changes quite a bit. Other shades may work better for us.

NYX Milk

• Using it as a highlighter for the brow-bone and Cupid’s bow – Yes, this works pretty well. Since this is a white shade, it really highlights those areas and the creamy texture gives it a nice finish.

What I like about NYX Jumbo Eye pencil?

• Really creamy in texture for something that costs just $4.
• Makes blending very easy.
• Quite the multi-tasker.
• Lots of shades to choose from.

What I dislike about NYX Jumbo Eye pencil?

• Contains Mineral Oil.
• If used as an eye shadow by itself, it requires a separate base. The texture of this pencil makes creasing super easy. If used with a proper base, these are da bomb!
• Not sure if the shade “Milk” would suit all skin tones although, it’s been hyped as a universally flattering eye shadow base.
• Not appropriate for thin lines and not sure if it’s waterline-safe.

This review was exclusively for Milk eye pencil which I feel may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Apart from all this, I would definitely say there are a few shades (I don’t remember names) that are worth trying. They are super creamy and are an affordable alternative to expensive cream eye shadows in the market. I am planning on trying some golds and pinks the next time.

19 Aqua green is a aqua green eye liner with soft golden sheen to it.

20 Sapphire is a deep blue liner with little specs of silver shimmer to it. It’s very pretty. Like when you apply it, you can see a little specs of shimmer here and there in your liner.

15 Glitzy brown is a bronzy brown liner. It also has little specs of silver coppery shimmer.

Sharpener

And here’s how you use the sharpener. Just fit it on the tip of the pencil and twist it. It will sharpen like a regular sharpener. You have to use both your hands to sharpen the pencils but since I had to click picture with one hand, the sharpener is hanging in the air.

Lifestyle has this colorfest going on under which they have various offers on cosmetics…I found the Maybelline one most interesting and hence just thinking of buying some stuff…for this I need feedback on the Maybelline Dream Mousse Blush and the Eye Studio pencils….I am NC35 in MAC, hence suggestions on the shade for the blush would also be helpful and suggestions in the eye pencils too.
