How To Make Lip Gloss At Home With Old Lipstick

Heylo All,

Here is my first attempt at making a lip gloss at home. Kindly don’t kill me if you find it difficult to follow or you think it isn’t creative at all. I made it sometime last year and totally forgot about it. I mean I use it but forgot to send it to IMBB. Only when Jomo gave me the idea to write something on DIY, I thought let me send this one. It is a DIY process that uses some old lipsticks to make lip gloss. Also, sorry for lesser number of pictures. I made it when I was not connected to IMBB and thus took the pictures only to please myself.

Things Needed:

Lipsticks, a pot and a lip balm or olive oil or Boroline/Boroplus. The third ingredient totally depends on what you want to use.

Method:

Take an empty pot. I had finished using my Jovees lip balm, so I decided to use that lip pot.

Cut down the lipsticks that you don’t use any more. I used my Rimmel lipstick in pink color and a Lakme nine to five lipstick.

Add the third ingredient – olive oil, almond oil, Boroline/Boroplus, butter. You can use any of these or can even mix if you wish to use more of the third ingredient. Remember to add third ingredient in very less quantity. Around 4-5 drops of the oil is sufficient (this is based on the amount of lipsticks I cut down).
Mix all the ingredients with a spatula.
Store in refrigerator

Yes, it is this simple. But here are few things that should be noted:

1. Before mixing the colors, be sure of the resultant color. Mix colors that you think would result in a color that you like.
2. Do not add butter as third ingredient. Butter has a tendency to melt at room temperature.
3. If you are adding oil, add in less quantity. You can add more later on but please be cautious while adding it in the beginning as it can make the gloss runny.
4. Mix it thoroughly so that no lumps remain.
5. Since you are adding oil, it is my suggestion to add lipsticks that you think aren’t hydrating in nature.
6. I wanted it in the same texture as it is shown in the picture hence the quantities are stated accordingly.
7. If you wish to make it a “real gloss,” you can add butter and can even store it in any of your emptied lip gloss tube or bottle. But store it in refrigerator if you are adding butter.

That’s all.

One last suggestion – please do not cut a working lipstick to try this. Consistency can be an issue as it depends on the amount and texture of the lipstick. So, first try it out with lipstick that you just don’t use or the lipsticks that you find drying in nature.

Tips & Toes Lip Lustre Lipstick: Rozyln

I went ahead and indulged in a very inexpensive lipstick haul from Tips & Toes online and this was just to give a chance to the brand. Tips & Toes brings back memories to me when my mum used to buy Lakme from shops in Udaipur and one lipstick used to last her 2 years and only then would she buy another one. Now, I flood her with lipsticks and she is unable to use them, but the point here is that Tips & Toes and Shringar Kumkum, etc., are things which have been there since the start of makeup in India perhaps.

I went ahead and made some guesses about the shades available online and had some nice ones and some horrible ones. I am starting with the shade I think was a good guess, never mind the texture and this shade is a little close to the very beloved Lotus Herbals Peach Creme.

The shade is also packed exactly like Lotus Herbals lipsticks which we all own in Pink Blush and Peach Creme. I don’t know whether they are even manufactured at the same location, but let’s not get into those details. The lipstick was received by me in this very state and I am afraid I should complain to the site about this.

The lipstick is a red-based orange and its not a red as it looks. Its mainly an orange lipstick. The texture is nice and thick and still on the lips it has to be layered on and on. It feels very sheer on the lips and comes out saucy too. I would still compare the color to Peach Creme from Lotus, but Lotus has a thicker texture. This one feels light and glossy and still good enough to cover pigmented lips.

The finish is more glossy than creamy or thick. I am happy with the way it came out on me and I would say I quite like orange-based lipsticks too, but one thing I would like to point out here is that I don’t know about what goes into making this lipstick. Hence, I do not recommend this to people with sensitive lips or skin troubles. Its smells funny, floral and chemical, and that does not makes it an enjoyable experience to use. The smell though does go away a while after application.

The lasting power is very bad considering how sheer and glossy it feels and it gets transferred easily too. Don’t expect any wonders, but I just wanted to share the shade I bought online just by guess work. The cheap plastic packing is nothing to talk about.

Last Word on Tips & Toes Lip Lustre Lipstick: Rozyln

I don’t recommend this lipstick, I just bought it for trial purpose. The shade by chance turned out good and I can make some use with it with a brush. The finish comes out luscious, but can be uneven too. It’s a soft glossy finish lipstick, unfortunately received by me in a broken condition, not to forget the cheap packaging which is a big turn off. I don’t have full lips, but the lipstick is making it seem fuller.

Catrice Ultimate Colour Lipstick in 130 Frozen Rose

Hi Ladies,

I picked up 2 other lipsticks from the Catrice Ultimate Colour selection and this time I picked out a rosy pink color. When I saw it at the store, it looked so beautiful and I swatched and loved it. I purchased this lipstick at DM.

Price:

This lipstick smells so fruity! I think all of their lipsticks smell good. This lipstick is matte but has a beautiful sheen to it if you apply a lot of it on your lips. The less you apply, the less sheen your lips will have. I really like the packaging. I feel like opening and closing the lipstick because it’s very sturdy and makes a nice sound, I know I am strange I love pink lipsticks and this one looked like a color that I don’t own yet. When I got home and applied this lipstick on my lips, I got very disappointed. It didn’t look the way I thought it would.

It emphasized the wrinkles on my lips and the color just did not suit me at all. I gave this lipstick like 5 chances, but every time I couldn’t make it work. I tried it with a lip liner, without lip liner, with a lipstick primer, but I just gave up. Luckily, the store DM lets you return anything that you are not satisfied with. I will most likely return this and maybe get another color. I also felt like it isn’t as pigmented as it is when I swatch it on my hand.

I am just very upset with this lipstick even though I am huge fan of the Catrice Cosmetics.

Pros of Catrice Ultimate Colour Lipstick in 130 Frozen Rose:

Packaging is absolutely amazing.
Smells so delicious.
Feels very moisturizing on my lips.

Cons of Catrice Ultimate Colour Lipstick in 130 Frozen Rose:

Emphasizes the cracks/wrinkles on my lips.
Color didn’t suit me at all.
Color looks different on the lips.

I am still a fan of Catrice Cosmetics. I just think that this particular lipstick just wasn’t right for me, but that’s not a problem because I am going to exchange it for something else. I do not recommend this lipstick in color Frozen Rose, but the other colors look very promising.

I am ecstatic to share a budget lipstick with you all which is a total must have. Now, no excuses of finishing one lipstick first to buy another one because the cost of this lipstick is lesser than your McDonald’s bill! So, order it today, now this minute.

I had visited Saravana Stores long ago and I know that due to parking issues, my hubby will not be keen on taking me there again, so I went overboard and splurged on anything and everything that I knew will be not available in the vicinity I got tons of these cheap lipsticks for Rs. 133 I believe as Saravana usually offers a discount on MRP, even on makeup. One after the other, these color rich lipsticks were turning out to be even prettier and wearable and I couldn’t help but think that these are just 3.5 grams and since these can be worn each day, these will be over before I know.

I know the packaging is a big turn off for all of us, cheap, black and grey plastic, no click lock, the cap just goes on like that and will inevitably come off in the hand bag. But I am ready to ignore all these vices because I am seriously surprised by some awesome nude and MLBB shades they have and they can make Diana of London learn a thing or two about nude shades

The lipstick is a small 3.5 gram one. It is amazingly smooth, soft, creamy, pigmented, luscious and saucy. It goes on feather soft on the lips and gives a moisture finish to the lips, something like Colorbar Soft Touch lipsticks. These don’t feel thick but still deliver some texture onto the lips, I mean to say that these are not sheer but have just the right amount of thickness.

The shade is a pinky soft nude brown, something that you can wear to office and wear it day in and day out. The shades is pure cream, no shimmer or frost, nothing over the top. I am totally floored by the lipstick, the texture and the shade because I could never think Streetwear would come out with such a gorgeous shade for a price tag of 140 rupees.

These may vary now on website from Rs. 140 to Rs. 160 as well, so do your homework and check the stock availability before you get this one. But I think once you do get it, you would wear it to office without the bother of checking how dark your lips look. This doesn’t wash me out, does add color to my face and looks saucy enough.

It gets transferred easily due to the texture and staying power is three to four hours in a single swipe, fine by me actually. I would say it almost fragrance free, it did not bother me at all.

Last Word on Streetwear Color Rich Lipstick: Pink Pie

Love it, what else do you want from a lipstick you paid Rs. 140 for, order it now! I am going to share some more nice shades form this affordable range. Yes, I know the packaging may turn us off, but look at the usability too. I can compare this shade to Maybelline Moisture Extreme Bonbon Caramel and somewhat to Chestnut too (check reviews on IMBB) in case you want a better brand.

So, I was out checking Maxfactor products the other day and I specially/specifically wanted to check the newly-launched “Ageless Elixir Foundation+Serum,” but sadly, it hasn’t reached some counters as yet. Even the SA had no clue about the product I was asking for. She said we just have elixir lipsticks, but no such foundation

So, I tried on a few shades and loved the texture of these lipsticks. I ended up picking one for myself :pompom: :pompom:

I got the shade Rosewood from the range. Rosewood is a pretty brownish; warm pink with slight mauve undertone. I find the shade to be very wearable. I won’t call it a unique shade, in fact it is quite “dupable,” but it is the kind of shade I would pick very often for my routine/day makeup. It would be apt for wearing to office too. It can make for a nice MLBB shade for some. I don’t why it reminds me a lot of MAC Cosmo and Twig Lipstick. I am not saying, Maxfactor Rosewood is a perfect dupe, but it does belong to the same colour family.

Packaging:

Maxfactor Elixir lipsticks come in a sturdy, matte gold finish casing which is very pretty. The lipstick has colored end which indicates the shade, which makes it easy to the identify shades in your stash (in case you own a lot of these )

Texture,Pigmentation and Staying Power:

Firstly, I am really surprised why there is no review on IMBB on these beauties from Maxfactor. This lipstick has extremely soft and creamy formula which glides smoothly/easily on the lips. It is quite moisturising too and I can skip using a lip balm underneath this. It has no prominent shimmer in it, but since, it’s a creamy lipstick, it does add a little bit of shine and does not sit flat on the lips.

It is fairly pigmented and I prefer to apply just 1-2 coats of this. It is pretty buildable, so you can easily intensify the shade as per your preference. The staying power is commendable too. It stays on me easily for 4-5 hours and even after food/drinks, there is a good amount of stain/color left on the lips. Lastly, I also like the fact that these come with slight vanilla fragrance and no cheap/chemical smell.

Overall, I love the elixir lipstick from Maxfactor and I so want to pick up more shades from this range. I would definitely/highly recommend these to everyone.

This is how it looks on me. I applied just one coat of this and I took these pictures after about 2 hours of wearing this, so the shade has lightened a bit.

Fairly pigmented.
No cheap fragrance/smell or taste.
Good staying power.
Pretty packaging.
Maxfactor products are not difficult to find in India, I believe.

What I Do Not Like about Maxfactor Color Elixir Lipstick in Rosewood:

These are slightly expensive(but worth every penny you spend on it).
No ingredients list mentioned.

Needless to say that I have now become a huge fan of lipsticks because of IMBB. I was having a lipstick tester pack from Amway Attitude and I was quite happy with that until I became addicted to IMBB. After reading so many nice reviews of lipsticks and looking at gorgeous Rati’s pictures, I finally decided to buy another lipstick for me. I wanted to start with budget items first, so I surfed for budget lipsticks on IMBB and zeroed in on “Maybelline Watershine” lipsticks.

Upon further research and some more reading of reviews (including the COMMENTS), I decided to buy Watershine Pure B22. Everything was decided and I was excited, and with the great spirit, I reached the Maybelline counter. I asked for B22 and got the billing done. I was so happy and proud because I had shopped for something within half a minute, guess it is a world record for shopaholics!! :dance:

When the SA made the bill and I was about to leave, she interrupted me and told me about their offer of “buy 2 get 1 free.” She didn’t even require to get pushy with me because I had already fallen for the offer. Seeing my record collapsing and cursing myself, I started looking for another lipstick. I picked MF21 and asked for the free one. The SA showed me two lipsticks from which I could choose the free one. One was horribly brown and the second was this bright pink lipstick called “Maybelline Color Sensational Velvety Wine.” For the record, I also got a Maybelline Watershine lip gloss as well.

My Take on Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine:

Before starting my take on the lipstick, let me tell you that Maybelline’s lipsticks have a tendency to break easily. After testing the tester lipstick, when I got my lipstick packed, the SA tried to open the packed one without taking the package off. It actually came off and the lipstick in that was already broken inside the case. So, I asked for another fresh piece. When I opened the lipsticks at the counter itself, to my shock, MF21 and “Velvety Wine” lipsticks were broken inside the case itself, but B22 was okay. I took fresh pieces but with a bit of hesitation. I was handling them with immense care and not using them much while travelling. All the three lipsticks I bought are in a good condition till now, but still, I will recommend everyone to open their lipsticks at the counter itself before coming home with them.

Now, about Velvety Wine. It is a bright pink, but not baby pink color. It comes in a chocolate-y case. It is very well pigmented and glides easily on the lips. Velvety Wine is very creamy in texture and one swipe is enough to get a good coverage. Because my lips are pigmented at the corners, I swipe more to cover corners well. Here are the snaps taken in natural light and flash light of the camera. I have not liked this color so much because it is not either a peach or pink. It is 2-3 tones darker to pink and it has got shine as well.

This lipstick is not matte, actually has a little shine to it. So, you won’t require lip gloss. I have applied watershine lip gloss just to see its effect.

Swatches:

Staying power is pretty less. On me, it stayed like 1-2 hours and after that only a bright stain remained for the next 1-1/2 hour. It may survive meals, but it did not survive ice-cream

Pros of Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine:

Highly pigmented.
Good quality for the price.
It does have a bit of shine which is very pretty, you won’t need to apply lip gloss on top of it.

Cons of Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine:

Has a tendency to break easily.
Staying power is less.
The packaging is not see through.
Maybelline tests on animals.
Limited availability at Maybelline counters.

Will I Repurchase Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine?

No, I will try something else.

Do I Recommend Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine?

Dusky, wheatish, and dark skin toned people could give this a try, but I do not recommend this strongly to anyone.

Final Verdict on Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Velvety Wine:

I have not liked the color much. This type of pink is not my color. I loved MF21 and B22 though, can’t say the same for this.

Faces Satin Matte lipstick gives a just-applied look for hours and will not crack, cake, or dry lips. Its smooth, glide-on texture gives a creamier feel for a long time.

Product Details:

Enriched with Vitamin E and extracts of raw mango butter for skin repair against climatic change. Super stay, easy to apply lipstick gives uniform lip color coverage. Lanolin and perfume free. Very moisturising and doesn’t dry out at all.
It gives a semi matte finish on lips.

The lipstick is highly pigmented and a single swipe gives a nice intense color to the lips giving complete coverage.

Price:

Rs. 299/- originally, but I got it for Rs. 255/- (15% discount).

Ingredients:

My Say on Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick – Mulberry:

This is my second lipstick from Faces brand and again, I love this one; not that much as I love my Faces Mineral Lipstick, but nevertheless, this is again a beautiful shade and a great lipstick.

Shade:

It is a reddish-purple or burgundy shade. The shade may look pinker with a hint of brown color in the swatch, but on the lips, it looks like a combination of pink and plum shade. It’s obviously a different shade in my collection and a beautiful matte shade for this fall.

I swiped at least 20 shades on the Faces counter and instantly fell in love with this shade as soon as the SA swiped it on my hand. It is a sort of color that is very easy to carry off kind and would compliment all skin tones pretty well. So, if you are bored with your usual pinks/plum, then you can definitely grab this shade as a great change. :love:

Swatch (single swipe) in natural light

Texture:

Buttery soft, super smooth, and nicely-pigmented texture this lipstick has. It glides on easily and keeps the lips hydrated and moisturized, but it may easily melt because of its soft texture, so keep it safe in summers. One may not face any issue of it settling in fine lines. Well, I have not seen a more creamy-textured matte lipstick like this one till now.

Staying Power:

It stays on for 2 hours with its full glossiness, then kind of fades away into a stain that stays on for 2 hours and more easily. You need to touch up after a full meal while it can survive light snacks without difficulty.

Packaging:

It comes in a glossy, black, sturdy outer packaging, but as the texture of lipstick is very creamy and soft, so the bullet may break with rough usage and one has to be careful while using it.

Pros of Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick – Mulberry:

Awesome shade.
Buttery soft and smooth texture.
Keeps the lips hydrated.
Stays on for 4-5 hours with meals in between.
Highly pigmented.
Decently priced.
Easily available.
Has a faint nice fragrance which remains for some time after applying it.

Cons of Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick – Mulberry:

The lipstick needs to be kept in a cool place in summers as it may melt.
Do take care while applying it too as the bullet inside may break.
Easily transferrable.

Yes, definitely. I love Faces lipsticks and I am going to purchase more of them for sure. These lipsticks are highly recommended. :thumbsup:

I bought this lipstick long back from Amazon and I wonder why I did not review it before.

I have the shade Zinfandel. It was a random online purchase and I had no clue about the shade when I purchased it. Zinfandel is a reddish pink with some copper tone and has golden shimmer in it. It is the kind of shade very apt for Indian weddings. I prefer to wear this only for formal occasions.

Packaging:

The lipstick has this really innovative-interesting packaging. On the first look it seemed like a cigarette lighter to me It has a mirror-like casing (which has now washed off now from the one that I have) and holds the lipstick and the lip balm.

The packaging has one base coat (red stick) which is the actual lipstick and top coat (white stick). As stated, the base coat is to be applied first and after a minute or so , we need to apply the top coat.

What I Like about L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipstick – Zinfandel:

It has a soft texture.
Great staying power (this is the only long-wear lipstick + party wear shade I have), stays intact for 6-7 hours easily.
Strong pigmentation.
Gives full coverage.
Interesting packaging.
I like the shade for my formal occasions or parties.

What I Don’t Like about L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipstick – Zinfandel:

Even though the texture is soft, it is slightly thick too.
Does not apply easily/evenly on the lips.
Absolutely a NO if you have dry and chapped lips.
Settles in lines.
Comes off only with a makeup remover.
Drying on the lips, so you need to reapply the top coat given with this often.

Will I Repurchase L’Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipstick – Zinfandel?

Overall, I don’t see myself repurchasing this lipstick, but since I have this, I do use it. It’s just that I need to reapply a gloss or a lip balm over this to make it work. If you have dry lips in general, you should stay away from these completely.
Also, these lipsticks are not available in India and for the first time I am not complaining about that

Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick in shade Cordovan

Dear IMBB-ians,

A Happy and Merry New Year!

Faces Canada is a brand that needs no introduction and I absolutely love this brand. I think most of their products are value for money and so when I got a chance to pick up a couple of lipsticks from their satin matte range, I jumped at the offer and this is only shade I totally dislike.

Shade Being Reviewed:

Cordovan.

Price:

INR 299 but you can get it for 250 and lesser through offers.

Product Description:

Enriched with Vitamin E and extracts of raw mango butter for skin repair against climatic changes.
Super stay, easy to apply lipstick gives uniform coverage.
Lanolin and perfume free.
Available in 18 different shades: Mostly browns and purple-reds and a few pinks (I have not seen any coral shade in this range!)

Packaging:

It comes in a proper black square packaging with ingredients and expiry date listed, which I totally love. The lipstick tube is also sleeky black and the shade is listed on the bottom. I do however wish that Faces Canada would start adding some color details on the wrapping so that it is easier to identify and select. The lipstick comes in sturdy plastic casing which I can assure you, is fall proof (having dropped it 3-4 times!)

My Experience with Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick in shade Cordovan:

I love this range, I absolutely love them. The lipstick is creamy soft without being as creamy as their moisture-rich range, but glides softly over lips. No shimmers, no glitters and it gives a creamy matte finish. The pigmentation is very good and you can get a good layer in one swipe. If you buy a stronger shade in this range, you might have to use a brush to apply this if you want to build this color, as a single swipe adds a nice amount of color.

It is not at all drying, doesn’t settle in fine lines and the staying power is average (around 3-4 hours without food) unlike the “super stay” claimed by the company. The only complaint I have is that this melts in hot climate, but not as crazily as the NYX round ones! So, if you’re buying this, clear some space in your fridge. It has a nice fragrance, so I guess this is not perfume free as claimed and it also contains parabens.

About the Shade:

Dusky beauties (like me), stay away from this shade. Fair skin lovelies, this could be either a nice nude shade for you or a creamy brownish shade you might like. I know the swatch looks pretty nice, but I cannot explain how this washes out my face, because it does! The shade brings out every flaws in my unevenly shaded skin, so I either use it with a pinkish or brownish gloss on top. The only way I use this as a stand-alone lipstick is for office, pairing this up with brighter eye and cheek makeup.

Pros of Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick in shade Cordovan:

Gives a creamy, satiny, matte effect as promised.
Glides on lips, doesn’t settle in fine lines and doesn’t dry out.
Nice and sleek packaging.
Value for money and easy available.

Cons of Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick in shade Cordovan:

Contains parabens and has a nice fragrance though they claim its perfume free.
Opaque packaging which gives no clue to shade inside.
Melts in humid climate.
I cannot honestly list a wrong shade as a con, so avoiding that.

Rating:

Overall, my rating is 4 (0.5 for parabens and 0.5 for melting).

Would I Buy Faces Canada Satin Matte Lipstick in shade Cordovan Again?

Of course, I love this range and I am planning to buy some nice shades, but after testing the colors out in a store.

My Experience with Wet n Wild Silk Finish Lipstick 502A Dark Pink Frost:

This is a pink frost color with some beige undertones. The beige warms it to an extent and makes it a very much wearable color for Indian skin tones. It is very well pigmented, long lasting, smooth, creamy and a perfect-value-for-money lipstick. I don’t find any need of applying a lip liner with this lipstick. It has a distinctive fruity smell, which I like. The lipstick doesn’t dry your lips and the color faints uniformly.

In fact, I cannot think of its replacement in Indian market till date. The packaging is very typical, with transparent cap and colored bottom for easy recognition in your stack.

Pros of Wet n Wild Silk Finish Lipstick 502A Dark Pink Frost:

Lipstick is creamy and glides smoothly on your lips.
It’s a versatile shade.
It doesn’t settle in fine lines, neither does it give a dry feeling.
It’s a very subtle frosty pink, perfect for Indian skin tones.
It has excellent pigmentation, you don’t have to rub it again and again to get the color.
I love the fruity fragrance.
It stays intact for almost 3-4 hours and then gradually fades away evenly.

Cons of Wet n Wild Silk Lipstick Finish 502A Dark Pink Frost:

Packaging is cheap, might break easily, but who minds at such a great price.
List of ingredients, expiry date not mentioned.
Some of you might not like the fragrance.
Not available in India.
