The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm Review

Hola amigos,

Today, it’s another TBS product up for review 🙂 I love body butters from TBS. They are the only thing my super dry skin finds solace in. 😛 But body butters are a bit heavy for summer time usage, aren’t they??!! As the fall was approaching, my skin tends to become drier and body lotions could not help, but again, it wasn’t appropriate to use body butters either, tricky weather!!! So, while browsing TBS website, I chanced upon to see this product and thought of giving it a shot.

The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm

Product Description:
Best if you want to: Nourish and protect your skin from dryness with a rich, comforting and intensely moisturizing balm that will leave it feeling soft, velvety smooth and scented with our traditional Spa Wisdom™ Africa fragrance. Best for all skin types, particularly those with very dry skin.

How it works:
Community Trade cocoa butter and shea butter from Ghana and sesame oil from Nicaragua moisturizes and softens the skin.  Community Trade honey from an organic source moisturizes the skin.  Ximenia, an oil extracted from the ximenia tree native to Africa helps soften the skin.

My Experience with The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm:

The product looks very similar to the body butters from the same brand, but I must say, it was the packaging which made me order this. 😛 The plastic jar with metal clasps looks classy and very different from the normal packaging. Though it is really difficult to close it with creamy hands, post application, but it really gives the spa-like feeling. 😛 Also, tub packaging loses points on hygiene too.

The texture is silky! The texture of the body balm is thick, but lighter than the body butters from TBS and is very creamy. We can say it is somewhere between body butter and body lotion. Though it looks thick in the jar, it melts as soon as it is applied on the body, making application very easy. 🙂

TBS body balm

The fragrance is fresh and good, but not over the top. In fact, it is very faint and would not bother sensitive noses at all. It doesn’t stay for long and can be easily layered with a fragrance of your choice.

Now coming to the application, the body balm applies easily. It absorbs quickly and is not greasy at all. The body balm is easy to spread, is very light, and leaves my skin smooth, soft and hydrated. But when TBS says that it is suitable for very dry skin, the claim is not true. I have super-duper dry skin and it keeps my skin moisturized for good 9-10 hours or so and a reapplication is needed post that. My feet that’s much more dry needs additional hydration in just a couple of hours.

I would say it is a good cream for the onset of fall season here as it would not suffice in the harsh winter months. I have been using The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm for over a month now, but there is no notable difference in the tone or texture of my skin.

Pros of The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm:

  • Classy packaging.
  • Silky texture.
  • Spreads easily.
  • Absorbs readily.
  • Does not leave any greasy layer on the skin.
  • Apt for the transitioning weather.
  • Mild fragrance, won’t bother sensitive noses.
  • Has goodness of cocoa butter, shea butter, sesame oil, honey and ximenea oil.

Cons of The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm:

  • Pricey.
  • Difficult to close the jar with creamy hands.
  • Keeps dry skin hydrated for just 10 hours or so.
  • My feet that’s much dry needs reapplication just after a couple of hours.

Would I Recommend The Body Shop Spa Wisdom Africa Shea Butter and Sesame Oil Body Balm?
If you are looking for something which is lighter than body butters, but more moisturizing than body lotions, this is your pick. However, for me, the weather is getting colder here in Minnesota and this body balm would not be sufficient. I might repurchase it in spring, but only if I find it on sale. I wont pay $24 for this. Body butters serve my dry skin better and are cheaper than this body balm.
