Nail fungus:

50% out of the total nail discoloration cases are due to fungi. These fungi do not only hanper the growth of your nail making it discolored but also cause the skin, the cuticles and the nail bed to clot and choke up making the fingernails, yellow, green or grey.

Nail fungus could also make your nails brown or yellow. Embedment of fungus under the nails can change your original nail color. Eventually the color of the nails will change. Unpleasant stench, flaking and chipping of nails can be common with nail fungus.

Smoking:

Yellow nails can be a result of excessive smoking too. Alcohol abuse and drug abuse may also result in discolored fingernails.

Abuse of the nail paint:

Constantly polishing the nails with nail paints can lead to yellow nails since nail colors deprive the nails of the oxygen which they need.Β  You need to let your nails breathe too. Applying a clear and good base coat prior painting your nails can reduce the chances of yellow nails.

  5. a good article zeeba, but your point of nails not getting enough oxygen is factually incorrect. nails are dead tissue and don’t need oxygen. though they do discolour because of constant use of nail polish, it isn’t because of oxygen deprivation.

      1. ok πŸ™‚
but i don’t think nail polish can deprive skin of oxygen
you know the two big toenails of my feet are horribly yellow.. i’m giving my nails a break now. not gonna paint them for a long time.
