10 Don’ts for Your Hair

Hello All!!

I have never had hair fall in my entire life, said nobody on this planet! Haha! I know, that almost sounded too good to be true. Well, while it definitely cannot be a possibility that we can survive with zero hair fall, as it is just natural for us to lose a few strands of hair every single day but it can be alarming if you lose too much of it. Finding too much hair on you comb, towel or pillow is definitely not natural and can be a cause for concern.

10 Don’ts for Your Hair

And when we do encounter a lot of hair fall, we start browsing the market shelves for every possible product to control hair fall but rarely do we give a thought to what we might be doing wrong to aggravate the condition. So, here I list down ten common mistakes we make with our hair that can add to our hair woes.

1. Oiling your Hair Wrong:

Oiling your hair shouldn’t look like you are scrubbing a grease pan. I have seen so many people do it so wrong, they oil their palms and get into war with the scalp by going in with rough scrubbing motions. This can lead to so much breakage of hair from the roots. Oiling the hair should be done using the finger tips gently, giving your scalp a gentle massage at the roots. Oil is like food for your scalp and it should be fed gently enough for it to soak up the oil.

2. Feeding Conditioner to Scalp:

The biggest mistake we make with the conditioners is that, we use it a tad bit too much than required. While conditioners are meant to tame your hair and make it more manageable, there is one big NO-NO a lot of us indulge in and that is applying conditioner starting right at the roots and doing that in large quantities. While the right way of doing it is to have a coin-sized amount, well-spread across the mid of the hair towards the tips of the hair, the above mentioned mistake can actually harm your hair.

3. Washing your Hair Wrong:

While it is utterly important to choose a shampoo that works for your hair requirements, it is equally important to wash your hair right. People tend to make the same mistake while washing their hair, as they do while oiling it. Again, they tend to scrub with their palms against the hair in harsh motions, while it should be enough to cleanse your scalp with your fingertips in gentle motions and gently cleanse the rest of your hair in between the palms.

4. A War with Your Hair:

If you have made a wise choice to stay away from hair dryers to avoid the extra damage and if you resort to towel drying your hair, there is one thing you should avoid and that is getting into a war with your hair with the towel. We have seen our moms and aunts do this and hence a lot of us follow this completely wrong technique. We flip our hair upside down and start hitting it with the towel in the desire to dry hair faster but this in turn will actually result in breakage of hair, as hair is weaker when wet and the harsh hitting against hair can uproot your hair easily. So, avoid doing that.

5. Damaging Hair Texture:

Another mistake we make with towel drying is that, we rub the hair with the towel in between our palms, doing this will create friction and make your hair rough and dry. Squeezing out water by gently pressing the towel against hair should be the right way of air-drying your hair with minimal damage.

6. Combing Wet Hair:

This is the most common mistake a lot of us make, no matter what hurry you are in, avoid combing through wet hair, as wet hair is weaker at the roots and combing through tangled wet hair can lead to easy breakage of hair. You can run your fingers through the hair gently, if you want to detangle it while it air-dries.

7. Sleeping with Product in:

We all love styling our hair and use every product that can give us the perfect finish to our hair-dos. But, one mistake to be strictly avoided is to wash hair clean at the end of the day before you retire for the day no matter how late it is in the night or how tired you might be. Leaving the product in overnight or for long period of time can damage your hair in the long run.

8. Exposing Hair to Sun:

While we pay special attention to our face and use every possible sunscreen for our skin, more often than never we tend to pay less attention to our hair. The harmful UV rays from the sun can equally damage your hair so, make sure to protect it by covering up with a light coloured scarf, especially if you travel by two wheelers or public transport.

9. Depending too much on Product:

Am sure all of us are struggling to manage our busy schedules and our hair is one of the most abused during our busy routines. We tend to depend on dry shampoos and other alternatives on bad-hair days to deal with the crunch in time. While dry shampoo is a great saviour, it should definitely not be your first choice as using too much product and chemical too often may not leave your hair in the pink of health.

10. Leaving it Unwashed:

And finally, the most important thing to be done. All of us have different scalp types and one should realize what works for them. Oily scalp can be a little extra bothersome. Daily travel, sweat and other factors lead to a murky scalp and a cleanse should not be delayed too much. Observe what routine works best for you and wash your hair twice a week to keep all the dirt build up at bay hence letting your scalp breathe and reducing hair fall.
