Hi IMBBians,

People all over the world are striving to be more fit by exercising regularly and maintaining a proper diet. But, there are some food items that may seem to be benefitting our health, but are actually causing harm to our bodies. Here are some of those products that must be avoided and reason for it:

10 Foods You Think Are Healthy But Actually Do More Harm Than Good

1. Processed Organic Foods

Organic foods have become a trend and food companies have capitalized on this interest by producing vast amounts of processed organic foods. Items like organic wafers and crackers may have been created using organic products, but they are processed to the extent that it contains high amounts of sugar and unhealthy oils. These products have low nutritive value and can easily cause obesity. Stick to organic fruits and vegetables.

2. Dairy Products

Various fresh dairy products

Dairy food items have come under scrutiny many times as humans were originally never required to include dairy in their diet. In fact, most of the world’s population cannot properly digest lactose, the sugar found in milk. Dairy may also contain allergic ingredients and have serious consequences for those who consider it to be nutritive. A number of minerals found in milk can be consumed from other foods like spinach.

3. Raw Nuts

Raw nuts like almonds are considered to be highly nutritive. However, they contain high amounts of cyanide. This chemical can only be completely removed when treated with high heat. Moreover, if not eaten in moderation, nuts can add high amounts of calories to the diet.

4. Fruit Juices and Sports Drinks

Watermelon Juice

Fruit juices, whether bought from the market or made at home, contain high amounts of sugar. Once a fruit has been juiced, all the fiber is lost. So, even if a fruit juice bottle boasts of nutritive elements, it simply contains fructose, a sugar, and some flavoring or coloring agent. Sports drinks or energy boosting drinks deliver a high amount of carbohydrates into the system so that one can exercise for longer. However, our diet already contains a lot of sugar and these drinks should only be taken if extreme training is being done.

5. Bottle Gourd or Lauki

Lauki has recently come under the scanner as researchers claim that it has toxic levels of cucurbitacins. These chemicals are said to be responsible for the bitter taste of the vegetable. When grown under stressful conditions, bottle gourd tends to accumulate these toxins to a harmful level. It has reportedly caused vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain.

7. Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is seen as an healthy alternative, but it actually contains saturated trans-fats. It also contains extremely harmful chemicals like PFOA that is added to Teflon pans, and the butter used can actually damage brain cells over time.

8. Diet Drinks

Diet coke

Most health conscious people prefer to drink Diet Colas, if they want to have a soft drink at all. But, Diet Cola has been reportedly found to contain brominated vegetable oil that is also used in rocket fuels. It can reduce fertility and harm thyroid glands.
