10 Homemade Remedies to Get Rid of Dandruff

Hi ladies,

Dandruff is one of the most common hair issues we have around. Sometimes it gets difficult to curb dandruff issues with chemical laden hair products as they also leave the tresses dull and dry looking. Let’s find out some homemade remedies to get rid of dandruff.

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda exfoliates the scalp gently and removes dead skin cells. Exfoliation ensures that there is no build-up of flakes on the scalp that make dandruff even more visible. Baking soda is also anti-fungal in nature. Take a spoonful of baking soda and rub it thoroughly in your wet hair and scalp. Leave it on for a minute and then wash it off. Do this 3-4 times a week until your problem subsides.

2. Neem

Neem is not only good for our skin but also in fighting dandruff. Neem has various antibacterial and antifungal qualities that inhibit the over-growth of dandruff causing fungus. Make a thick paste by grinding neem leaves in a food processor and apply this paste to the scalp and leave for 10 minutes then wash off with water. You can also boil neem leaves in water and use it to rinse your hair thoroughly.

3. Lemon

lemon

Lemon has Vitamin C and is acidic in nature which helps keep dandruff at bay. You can take juice of 2-3 lemons and add water to this. Use this mixture to rinse your hair after every hair wash. You can either squeeze out its juice or rub it directly on the scalp.

4. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has a power to fight fungal and bacterial infections. You can use tea tree oil and dilute it with 2-3 tbsp of water. Use this to massage onto your scalp and wash it off after 5 minutes. Raw tea tree oil can be too strong so always dilute it and do not leave this on for more than 5-10 minutes.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is acidic in nature and has active ingredients that help fight dandruff. An overgrowth of fungus can cause dandruff, and vinegar acts like a fungicide. You need to mix one part of apple cider vinegar with equal part of water and keep aside. Pour the mixture over your hair, scrub it around gently for few minutes, and then rinse it thoroughly with water. Do this procedure twice a week.

6. Fuller’s Earth

The cooling effect of fuller earth soothes the scalp, removes excess oil and fights irritation. Make a pack using fuller’s earth, water and add lemon juice to it. Apply it on hair and scalp and leave on for 20 minutes and wash off with water.

7. Aloe Vera

aloe

This wonder gel mildly exfoliates the skin and has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. It calms down an irritated scalp and provides relief from inflammation. You can directly apply freshly extracted Aloe Vera gel to the scalp 15 minutes prior to washing your hair. After 15 minutes, wash it off and shampoo your hair with an anti-dandruff shampoo.

8. Curd

The acidic content of the curd helps to combat dandruff and give your hair a shiny and lustrous texture. You can make a hair mask with curd and add 1 tsp lemon juice to it. Keep it on for 30 minutes and rinse off with water. You can shampoo your hair after that.

9. Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds are rich in protein and amino acids which encourage healthy hair growth and fight off dandruff in the process. Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Make a paste in the morning and apply on scalp and hair and leave on for about an hour. Rinse it off and wash hair with a mild shampoo. Repeat this 3-4 times a week for best results.

10. Garlic

This pungent smelling ingredient has great medicinal values which can help you to fight your dandruff issues. You can extract juice of garlic cloves; mix it with water and 1 tbsp of honey. Apply it on your scalp and leave it on for an hour. Wash it off using a mild shampoo.
