1. Washing it too quickly

Our cuticles get opened up after colouring and take 24 to 48 hours to re-seal. It may be too tempting to wash post-colour but you need to wait at least 24-48 hours before shampooing.

2. Parting your hair in same way

If you always part your hair in the same place then after sometime sun will fade away the colour near that parting so change up your hair and parting when you are out in the sun.

3. Using the wrong styling products

hair spray

Many of the hair styling products contain alcohol which dry out the hair, make them porous which can further lead to colour molecules being lost. So stay away from products which have alcohol in them and use the ones with moisturizing ingredients.

4. Washing your hair too often

Washing your hair too often will lead to decrease in the intensity of your hair colour. Instead of shampooing your hair every day, try using a dry shampoo at the roots to soak up oil.

5. Rinsing with hot water

Never use hot water on your colour treated hair as hot water will lift away the outer cuticle layer of your hair and your colour will fade away quicker. So use cold water or slightly lukewarm water on your hair.

6. Not using a conditioner for color-treated hair

Dyed hair can get dry and brittle so always use a conditioner that is specifically meant for colour treated hair after shampooing. It helps create a protective barrier, which can prevent your dye from quickly washing out. You can also try a leave-in conditioner.

7. Drying roughly with a towel

One should never use towel on their hair, be it colour treated or otherwise. Excessive rubbing can lead to dry and brittle hair and can also lead to fading of colour. Air-dry your hair or use a cotton tee to gently blot your hair.

8. Over-exposing your hair to the sun

Harmful sun rays are the biggest culprit when it comes to fading of colour. If you are going to be out in the sun for longer hours then make sure to cover your hair or wear a hat to keep your hair color from fading or lightening.

9. Ignoring the advice of your hair stylist

Not all hair colour work for all hair types. If your stylist is advising you against a certain color, there’s probably a good reason behind it. So listen to your stylist before getting your hair coloured and have a talk with him to reach a good point of understanding.

10. Choosing a hair color that matches your skin tone

Same pale shade on your hair and skin can make you look washed out so don’t be too ‘matchy-matchy’! Try to create a contrast between your skin tone and your hair colour.

11. Trying extreme hair colour changes at home

If you want any major change in your hair colour then it is always best to go to a professional. One level change and colour glossing can be done at home but if you want something more then always see a good hair stylist for that!
