15 Ways to Detox Your Liver the Natural Way

Hello beauties,

I hope you are enjoying the festive season and the vacations. I am home for the vacations and enjoying all the pampering. And I just realized that during vacations, I don’t go for workouts and I don’t eat…I overeat! Are you guilty of the same sins? Especially when it is this time of the year, full of festivities, it is a ‘lots of fried and processed foods plus overeating’ mode for us, right? Amidst all this, we completely forget about the liver, which happens to be overworked and overstressed.

Other factors which add to the problem are the environmental pollution that we are constantly exposed to and the stressful life which most of us lead. When the liver is stressed, it cannot process toxins and fats in an efficient manner. However, with a few changes in lifestyle and a little effort, it is always possible to take care of the liver. So in today’s post, I share with you 15 ways to detoxify your liver.

1. Drink Lots of Water

Infusing lots of water into your diet helps flush out toxins and keeps you hydrated. It is also beneficial for your skin, hair and overall health. Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day.

2. Add Lemons and Limes to Your Diet

Add the juice of half a lemon to your tea or glass of water. Lemon juice mixed with hot water, first thing in the morning, is the best thing. It helps promote the production of bile in the liver, prevents formation of gallstones and also promotes digestion and liver function.

3. Up Your Veggies Intake

Vegetables, especially leafy green vegetables, are some of the most powerful weapons to cleanse the liver. They absorb environmental toxins from the bloodstream and also neutralize heavy metals and chemicals. Beets and carrots contain plant flavonoids and beta-carotene and hence improve overall functioning of the liver. Go for greens like bitter gourd, arugula, dandelion greens, spinach, mustard greens.

4. Natural Fruit Smoothies

Fruits and vegetables are known to improve the overall health of the liver. Fruits, especially berries, contain organic acids that help to lower blood sugar levels, and help to burn fats, thereby reducing chances of liver fatty diseases. Apples hold the chemical constituents necessary for the body to cleanse and release toxins from the digestive tract. This, in turn, makes it easier for the liver to handle the toxic load during the cleansing process. Hence fruit juices and smoothies are always a good idea.

5. Green Tea

Green tea includes catechins, which is a type of plant antioxidant that boosts liver function. It also reduces storage of fats in liver. Ditch your usual cup of tea or coffee, and switch to green tea and you will see the differences yourself!

6. More of Garlic

Garlic has the ability to activate certain liver enzymes that help flush out toxins from our body. Garlic also contains high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

7. Say Yes to Grapefruit

High in Vitamin C and antioxidants, grapefruit increases the natural cleansing processes of the liver. It also has a flavonoid compound which causes liver to burn fat.

8. Eat Walnuts

Walnuts contain arginine, an amino acid that aids the liver in cleansing of ammonia. It also contains glutathione and omega-3-fatty acids, which help in the natural cleansing actions of the liver.

9. Turmeric

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory actions throughout the body including liver. It boosts liver detox by stimulating enzymes that help flush out dietary carcinogens.

10. Reduce Alcohol and Caffeine Intake

I know coffee and women are inseparable. But alcohol and caffeine are two of the biggest culprits that tax the liver. Replacing them with non-alcoholic beverages help your liver to regenerate, cleanse itself and function properly.

11. Avoid Processed Foods

Foods that are processed and contain lots of preservatives, fats and cholesterol can cause the liver to become congested and clogged with fat residue. Say no to fried and processed foods, bad fats and foods that contain artificial sweeteners, colorings and preservatives.

12. Embark on A Fruits and Juices Fast

Fasting is one of the best ways to cleanse not just the liver, but the entire system. But consuming nothing for an entire day is hazardous too. So opt for a fast wherein you consume only fruits and juices.

13. De-stress Your Life

Stress is a man’s biggest foe. Stressful situations release hormones into the blood stream that deposit in the liver and slow down its functions. Stress is disastrous for your overall well-being. Even if you cannot eliminate this villain from your life completely, try doing distressing activities like yoga, meditation etc.

14. Always Opt for Natural Products

Whenever you expose yourself to harmful chemicals, the liver has to work more to keep you healthy. It always helps to use organic products in every possible way.

15. Exercise More

Exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, which in turn lowers your risk of fatty liver disease. Exercise also improves the function of liver enzymes.
