5 Best Stress-Relieving Yoga Poses for Beginners

Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Kneel on the floor with knees hip-width apart, the top of your feet flat on the floor and sit back on your heels. With hands hip-width apart, move forward and rest your forehead on the floor, relaxing your head and shoulders while extending your arms and fingertips.

Downward Facing Dog (Adhomukha Savasana)

From child’s pose, keep your hands on the floor, sit up on your knees, and then press back into the ‘Downward Facing Dog’. Spread your fingers wide and create a straight line between your middle fingers and elbows. Work on straightening your legs and lowering your heels toward the ground. Relax your head between your arms, and direct your gaze through your legs or up toward your belly button. Hold for 10 breaths.

Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana)

Stand with your feet closed and arms resting on the side. Raise your hand above your head while inhaling and bend your torso forward while exhaling. Touch the ground with both your hands, keeping your legs straight. Hold the pose for 30 seconds with normal breathing rhythm. Come back to the starting position. Repeat it 5 to 10 times.

Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana)

Lie on your belly, with the chin on the floor, palms flat on the floor under the shoulders and legs together. Pull up the knee caps, squeeze the thighs and buttocks and press the pubic bone down into the floor. Without using the arms, inhale and lift the head and chest off of the floor, keeping the neck in line with the spine. With the elbows close to your sides, press down into the palms and use the arms to lift you up even higher. Drop the shoulders down and back and press the chest forward.

Corpse Pose (Shavasana)

This is the most calming and relaxing of all poses. Lie down on the yoga mat with any cushion or pillow for support. Keep your feet slightly apart and relax your knees and toes. Place your arms on the side of your body, your palms open and facing the ceiling. Close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply to relax your body and mind. Stay in this posture for 10 minutes and end your yoga session in a relaxed and rejuvenated way.
