5 Ingredients for Easy DIY Dry Shampoo

By Chayanti Mukherjee

Hello gorgeous,

If you wake up late and don’t have time for a full shampoo then dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend. Great in between washes, dry shampoo is an absolute must have in your hair care regime. Though it doesn’t look as clean as a shampoo would but it is a good alternative. It’s basically a product that takes the grease out of your hair on the days you don’t have time to take a shower. Add an instant volume to your limp hair. Unfortunately, maximum dry shampoos are pretty costly and in Indian market it’s really hard to find a good pocket friendly dry shampoo. So I figured, why not make your own dry shampoo?

5 Ingredients for Easy DIY Dry Shampoo

Today I’d like to share with you some DIY Dry Shampoo recipes with your kitchen ingredients. I will separately mention the recipes according to your hair color.

Baby Powder:

Baby powder is not just for babies. This sweet smelling white powder can do so much more. Baby powder is probably the most popular alternative to buying dry shampoos. It removes oil and grease and makes your hair look freshly washed. It smells great so your hair will smell freshly washed too. You just sprinkle it onto your comb and then run that comb through your hair till the roots. This works great for women with blonde hair. If you have a darker hair then just add just some cocoa powder to the baby powder or redheads can add a bit of cinnamon. Then apply the mix with a big powder brush and massage with your fingers for 5 min.  Your hair will look great. Baby powder can absorb excess oil from the scalp and give a new look to your hair. Your soft, grease free hair stays for 1 – 2 days depending on your hair type.

Cornstarch:

If you know how to use it correctly, corn starch is the perfect natural alternative to commercial dry shampoos. Its soothing quality makes it an excellent remedy for hair problems and its moisture-absorbing power and lack of scent makes it good for all people. This ingredient also makes it a far less expensive alternative. Learn about the ways you can use cornstarch as a dry shampoo in your everyday life. Just mix 1/3 cup of cornstarch and two tablespoons of baking soda in a container.  Add some essential oils for good smell.

Blonde: You do not need to add anything to the mixture.

Brunettes: Add some cocoa powder to the mixture. If your hair is darker, add more cocoa.

Redheads: Replace the cocoa with cinnamon. Add ¼ cup of cinnamon into the mixture.

Sprinkle a small amount on your hair brush or a face powder brush. Apply gently onto your root and just comb your hair. It will absorb all the dirt and grease from your hair and leave your hair looking clean and oil free.

Bentonite clay has been traditionally used to help bind toxins making them more soluble and powerful healing clays. It has a different use as a dry shampoo with a mixture of baking soda or arrowroot powder.  It is a great clay which helps absorb oil and make your hair oil free for a long time. You just need to mix 1 cup of Bentonite clay with baking soda and add some lavender oil to it. Mix them together and add cocoa powder or cinnamon to match with your hair color.

Plain Arrowroot is a very suitable waterless shampoo for oily hair. This white powder has more or less the same cleaning and absorbing properties as corn starch does.

3/4 Cup Arrowroot powder
1/4 Cup oats (properly blended like powder)
5-6 drops essential oils, optional

Mix all the ingredients together. With a large dry makeup brush, apply a dusting of powder to roots of the hair. Lift up a few large sections of hair and apply it to the roots. Style your hair like you normally would and pat yourself on the back for the extra 15 minutes of sleep you managed to score.

Oatmeal is a skin friendly product with lots of hair benefits. Baking soda is great for heavy cleansing and we are also taking advantage of its absorbency. In fact, our oily haired friends can use it as a dry shampoo. Applied to the roots, it soaks up the oil that visibly travels down the strands of a straight hair.

Mix equal parts of baking soda and grounded oatmeal. Flip your head over and massage the dry shampoo onto your scalp while fluffing your hair. It is easy to make and it actually works. Hair does not feel caked.

Tips:

  • Your hair should be completely dry. Otherwise you will get a lot of lumps.
  • Before applying the shampoo brush your hair. Apply the chosen powder on the greasiest place of your scalp with a brush and rub it well into the scalp with your fingers.
  • You can also gently comb to distribute the powder over the entire length of your hair.
  • Try not to continue touching your hair or scalp once you’ve fluffed natural oils on your hands as it can weigh hair down.

  1. Other than baking soda and baby powder, I didn’t know any of these could be used as a dry shampoo… Good post, will try bentonite clay.
