Today’s post is one that I think many of us on IMBB will find useful. Because if you’re here on IMBB, it’s evident that you are also a makeup and/or skincare addict like me. Needless to say, there has been an uncontainable explosion in the beauty industry and the market is flooded with makeup and skincare products. Almost on a daily basis, brands from across the world are launching new products. With their tempting packaging and alluring claims, we’re likely to be convinced that we not only want these products but, actually need them. But, even when it comes to drugstore beauty products, things really aren’t that cheap anymore! So, how do you get the best of what you want from among these makeup and skincare products without breaking your bank?
Let’s read on for some of my suggestions on how to shop smart for makeup and skincare.
1. Create a Master List:
The first and most important step for shopping smart when it comes to makeup and skincare is to create a master list. On this list, put down the types, categories, brands and specific products that you think you already have and things that you think you need and want. While doing this, keep in mind the types of makeup looks that you tend to go for, or the specific skin concerns that you want to address. Having this list will give you an overview of everything that you already have and things that you want, so that every time you go shopping, you know exactly what to get and what not to get.
2. Set a Shopping Limit:
In terms of both budget and the frequency of shopping, you will need to set a limit. With online shopping, it’s really easy to keep putting things in your cart and make purchases. But to curb this impulse, set a monthly expenditure budget for beauty products and promise yourself not to shop more than 1-2 times a month(or whatever other limit works best for you).
3. Always Look for Deals:
The good thing about shopping online is that you’re likely to find most products at discounted rates. If by chance, you don’t come across discounts, then you may want to wait for the frequent sales to come around to get a good deal on your purchases.
4. Know your Skin Concerns:
Before you start shopping for skincare products, you need to be well acquainted with your skin type and your skin concerns. For example, if you have dry skin, you want to stay away from drying cleansers and powder-based makeup products. Or if you have chapped and flaky lips, then there’s no point following the liquid lipstick trend. Knowing your skin concerns will help you stay away from gimmicky products that you don’t actually need.
5. Create Two Different Lists:
As the next step when it comes to list making, create two specific lists—one for essentials and one for luxury splurges. Essentials should have things like moisturiser, cleanser, toner, etc. for skincare, and foundation, concealer, mascara, eyeliner, etc. for makeup. In your list of luxury splurges, you can put down the new shades of lipstick that you really want, or some new formula that you really want to try out. If you find that you still want those items on the luxury list even after 2-3 months, then you can go ahead and get it. But, if you find this list changing quite frequently, then these are likely to be impulse purchases that you should probably avoid.
6. Spend Some, Splurge Some:
It’s a good idea to know where to splurge and where to save when it comes to beauty products. My recommendation is that you splurge on good quality skincare and base products like foundation and concealer, and save on items like mascara and lipstick, which you anyway change and update quite frequently.
